PROSECUTE ALL OFFENDERS, NEMA ED SAYS The ED has warned that all illegal sand miners will be prosecuted to save the environment. Guiding the regional team after their inspection of sand mining areas in Busia, @ABarirega urged staff to work more with police to apprehend offenders.

This is a very powerful message. African negotiators in the area of plastic pollution, and myself, have just had an engagement at Sheraton Kampala Hotel. Many meaningful ideas have been shared, and Africa will definitely speak with one voice on plastics going forward.

NEMA IMPOUNDS CHARCOAL-LOADED TRUCK @nemaug Mbale Regional Office has impounded a truck fully loaded with charcoal in Bukwere Market, Industrial Division, Mbale City. The case has been opened under SD Ref 28/19/10/2023. Two suspects have also been detained at Maluku CPS.

On Fri 25th Aug, 2023, Mbale Regional Team arrested a foreign resident (Indian national) for commencing construction in the wetland along Mbale-Tororo road.. He was released on bond, pending further investigations.

Monday, August 14, @nemaug's south western region team, together with Rwampara District Local Government, undertook an assessment and mapping exercise of the wetlands in the district. Two people were arrested for burning the vegetation and draining a wetland for agriculture.

Environment management in Uganda is a decentralised function. But all of us have a responsibility to protect and take care of this one earth that feeds and houses us. NEMA has a mandate but individuals should have a fast behavioural change. Disbanding NEMA is no solution.

Mother Teresa once said, in support of environmental sustainability: “I only feel angry when I see waste. When I see people throwing away things we could use.” In the same spirit, @nemaug believes garbage can be reused or repurposed to serve today, and to benefit generations.
