I turn 35 years old today. In the 35 years I've been alive, I've had one "real" birthday party I can remember. My dad hated having kids around, which meant no birthday parties like "normal kids" got. In 1st grade, my mom stood up to my dad and made it her point to give me a true birthday party with all my classmates and friends. She made all the invitations, had tons of activities, made games for 15+ kids to play around our house, cooked all the food, prepared all the snacks and had gift bags for everyone to take home. It wasn't an extravagant party that would be featured in magazines or like you'd see in movies or on TV shows. But man, that party was the coolest thing to me. Honestly ... I don't remember much of anything from that birthday party — what gifts I got; which of my classmates or friends were there. But, what I do remember is my mom being there, and my dad not. And her doing everything she could to give me that experience at least once in my life. Even though it's been however many years, every year on this day I think about that specific birthday and everything my mom did for me. Sadly, she's been gone for 15 years, and I can't even remember if I ever said thanks for throwing me the party. Thanks for the party, mom.
