I just received these instructions for wedding guest attire and I get the request not to wear white (only sort of though because it’s Miami and it’s hot and it’s an outdoor wedding) but the rest? Lol. Get out of here. I’m not going.
To clarify, I didn’t post this as a criticism of people who like Sylvia’s poetry. I am a fan myself & have written several poems about, for & inspired by her. I also love her daughter, Frieda, who is a great poet & artist in her own right & who deserves our respect & support.
I have also seen the movie, Sylvia. Guilty as charged. Look, I love this poem. That’s why I posted it. It gives us a lot to think about. It’s memorable, and Frieda is still writing poetry. Buy her books. Support her. Let’s celebrate poets while they are living among us. ❤️
@streganonastan
It’s the principle for me. I guess I don’t care what color my friends are wearing when I invite them somewhere. I get wanting your wedding party and family to be coordinated for photos, but for your guests to be banned from wearing certain colors is over the top.
@AkanaPhenix
They still exist. Here’s one in the metro station in Montreal. They are far less common than they used to be and when I was growing up, they were very common in public places.
@LummisofLA
I really shouldn’t give this any oxygen, but your behavior is deplorable. People are “raving” because your comments are completely insulting and insensitive.
New month, new POETRY! Kick off May with our latest issue, edited by

If you want to read more of Frieda’s poems, I would recommend Out of the Ashes because it contains poems from four of her books, along with some interesting insights and notes.
@cocoskeeper
What does it matter? It’s overbearing to color-control guests’ attire to this degree. Will it really ruin the wedding if someone shows up wearing khaki? Come on now.
If you published a poetry book (chap or full-length) in 2022, please share it here. Let’s celebrate each others’ success and maybe help generate some more holiday book sales for each other!
Last night at dinner, Marie Howe and I were talking about first books, and I told her somewhat ashamed that I published my first at 45, and she looked straight in the eyes and said, “You and Robert Frost.” And now I don’t feel so bad for being a late bloomer. ❤️
@fklein907
If it’s the same one I received yesterday, I laughed when I read it because 6 people signed their names to it — meaning, it was a committee decision and they all thought the patronization was appropriate.
Who are the poets out there who have published at least one book with a traditional publisher and do NOT have an MFA? I’m noodling an idea for an AWP Panel, and trying to find people with similar experience.
“I realized that to not go crazy, I had to think of everything as ‘of a piece.’ Parenting, writing, teaching, therapy were all part of one cloth, rather than separate activities. I still do a lot of writing in my head.”

Poets, there is no need to get nasty if you receive a rejection. It’s my right to decline your work if it doesn’t align with my vision. My own submissions get rejected ALL THE TIME. Rise above. Carry on. Be kind.
Still thinking about the guy who wrote back to tell me that I was declining “the best voice of his generation” when I declined his poetry submission and that I would live to regret it.
Someone asked me to write a 500-word piece for a newspaper, so I wrote a 500-word poem and I really hope they publish it because there should be more poetry in newspapers, don’t you think?
How do you feel about photos in poetry books—maybe not a lot, but just a few to mix things up a bit? Any particular books you’ve come across that do this well?
Poets, have you ever taken acting classes or performed in a play? I only ask because I’ve noticed that quite a few of the poets I’ve seen who really shine at readings have some sort of theatre background.
What’s the one expression you most remember your mother saying when you were growing up? For me, it’s “A woman’s work is never done,” and I think a lot now, with sadness, about how true that was for her.
@VivienJastrzeb
I am the plus 1 in this equation, so I don’t love the requester. If this were a close friend, I’d probably give in, but then again, none of my close friends would be this obnoxious.
My dad had a stroke. I’m flying to Michigan first thing in the morning because all the flights that would have arrived anywhere nearby today are sold out. Please keep him in your thoughts. There’s freezing rain, so they have to drive him to Flint by ambulance vs. airlifting. 😔

My grandma Eloise passed away this morning. She had just turned 100 in October & was my last living grandparent. She outlived my mother. She loved to drink a little whiskey now and then, & she loved to laugh a lot. What a life. Sending lots of love to her wherever she is now. 💙
I’ve never heard of Jane Greer, but I’ve been reading & admiring Diane Seuss for years. To say Diane isn’t writing poetry is outrageous & myopic. Jane is clearly desperate for attention. I’m only giving her my attention because Diane is a true queen & too classy to blast her.
Yes, I know that Diane Seuss won the 2022 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry, but this is not only NOT a sonnet, it is not any kind of poetry at all. It is prose.
Starting to plan my Blue Mountain Review author interviews for next year, so if you have a POETRY book coming out and would like to be considered, please drop a pre-order link below or just the title and publisher if you don’t have have a pre-order link yet.
@ambernoelle
It crossed my mind, but I’m the plus 1 in this equation, so I’m not investing the time or the money for a bride who’s not a close friend. Also, this is sadly just one of her demands, so I’m getting a bad vibe. 🤣
As an editor, I would rather read one really solid poem in a submission than one strong one plus several filler pieces. I say this to express that if you only have one piece that you think is ready for prime time, maybe just send that one—especially if it’s a free submission.
Is there a Best of Twitter Poetry Anthology? Let’s create one (or another one), while we’re still here. Share what you consider you to be your best poem in this thread. This is very official.
I recently had an editor reach out about 2 of the poems in my submission packet & basically say: I like these, but I’d like to make a few edits. Would you be open to that? And I’m so glad I was because my poems are better for it & I’m grateful they took the time to collaborate.❤️
Seeing quite a few poets drop off of here & my follower count dropping commensurately as well, but I’m staying & I’m going to keep using my account (whether it shrinks or grows) to elevate poetry. I like sharing poems here, so that’s what I’m going to do. We’ll see how it goes.

The Blue Mountain Review, and this queen is going to knock your socks off. 🔥🔥🔥
I’m launching & hosting a Thursday evening Zoom reading series in April & the idea is to create community & wellness through poetry while giving voice to authors with new books out. So, if you have a new poetry book out & are interested in reading at some point, please link me!
