The University of North Carolina Greensboro has dissolved the Physics & Astronomy department. A major pillar of science education at that university is gone. I have no words. My heart goes out to my friends and colleagues.
@mcbyrne
The university chancellor said that they will “continue to offer the lower-division physics courses required for STEM majors.”
I believe that they plan on bringing in lecturers/teaching faculty.
@CA_AstroComm
PhD in Astrophysics. I call myself a Planetary Astrophysicist because I work on going from the composition of a star to the interior make-up of a planet (outside of our Solar System), since stars and planets are formed at the same time and from the same material.
✨Life Update✨ This fall I'm starting as a new faculty member at Louisiana State Uni in the Dept of Physics & Astronomy! 😃 Which means, in a few weeks, we are moving to Baton Rouge. 🤯
I'll also be looking for students+postdocs to work with me in the next ~year. So 👀 for it!
Hey scientists, do you have a "theme" to your computer names? If so, what is it?
When I was an undergrad, I was told me that an astronomer (scientist?) *had* to pick a theme. It was almost like a right of passage.
So, my theme is "names of rodents": dassie, jerboa, viscacha...
Life Update: After tons of consideration, I've accepted a job as a Senior Research Scientist at the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) in San Antonio. It's a permanent, partial-soft money position where I'll be starting an exoplanet group. Let the good science roll!
So I wrote a thing (a Netflix-like algorithm that predicts stars likely to host giant planets) and then I wrote a thing (a published paper!) and then I wrote a thing (an article talking about all of this in a more understandable way).😁
#AbSciCon2019
I did it! I taught my first class (on planetary astrophysics) as an assistant professor with no major catastrophes!
And now I would like to pass out please.
Is your brain ready for a LOT of interdisciplinary exoplanet knowledge! 🧐🤯 You know it is!
🧵In Jan 2021, Keith Putirka, Siyi Xu, and I joined forces to put together 15 chapters (and a workshop!**) written by experts in their field, where the core of each chapter was:
Studying exoplanets requires extremely inter/multidisciplinary expertise -- people from astronomy, geology, planetary science, data science, and biology. This is why

My paper was (finally) accepted!!!! I've been working on it for +2yrs, including being in review with NatAstro for 1yr (😕). But after 1.5mos, it's now been accepted to ApJ. I'm so excited about this paper, it's cool and novel...but also, I'm so relieved it's done. On arXiv soon.
My little geek heart is so excited -- I was just a contestant on

My dad sent my press release article to my grandma (who had to quit school at 8th grade when WWII reached the US). She was so proud she sent me flowers. I have a lot of feels.

My trusty water bottle. After living in Arizona for ~10 years, I've learned the importance of staying hydrated and rarely go anywhere without it. Plus, the dents and bumps are a point of pride that it's had a long and interesting life. 😃
Hello, world, this is my new kitten Lasagna, or Zanya for short. He is 2mos old and weighs ~2lbs. He loves to chase the feather toy, pounce on everything, and cuddle sleep. He also has the purr of a tiny truck. Like a reverse Garfield, he loves Mondays. So have a good Monday!
First day of work as a Senior Research Scientist at SwRI! I meant to post this yesterday, but it was a whirlwind of the orientation-variety. Soon I will have a "real" first day photo because they took professional headshots...just like school photos (but with more feedback!).
This is not true at all. Statistically, it's very likely that there is other life in the Milky Way. But Avi Loeb is not the expert nor does he speak for most astronomers.
@TheEconomist
Your timing on this is quite bad. You might want to check in with Jill Tarter.
I have officially closed all of my tabs (gasp!), turned off my computer (double gasp!!) and left it at home (a milllion gasps!!!!). It's time for a legit vacation.
As
@aussiastronomer
likes to say, I've done enough, you've done enough. 😉🌈
Ok, so a guy known to be a steam roller publicly steam rolls a very well respected woman. Why are we surprised? This was the logical conclusion. Worse, other people, WHO ARE STEAM ROLLERS THEMSELVES now have tHoUgHTs and whoa let me tell you...it's time for some introspection.
This semester I am teaching the same students as the fall. But over the weekend, LSU somehow deleted my class. The whole thing.
My students were like, "There's no way she'd cancel class and not tell us."
Y'all. They thought I died. One student even looked up my obituary. 😵😂
4 years ago I started weight lifting as a new way for me to exercise and an outlet for my feelings. Today was the first workout in the new place and even though being a new professor is 100% KICKING my ass (only 4 weeks into the semester), I'm feeling WAY better about things.
Everything aligned...

I get that we're busy. But if a student reaches out to you, you should *at least* respond to them, even if to say you don't have time. It's hard to cold email someone, especially someone you admire.
I've done a lot of big worky things recently: had a paper accepted & PI'd my first NASA mission proposal. Normally I'd treat myself to some spa time, but that's not possible right now. So today I'm doing an at-home-spa day, complete with schedule, robe, music, & wine!

Let me tell you about a little element named phosphorus (or P). P is a very important because it's critical to life on Earth, i.e. DNA, and is a key component in the Redfield ratio which relates C:N:P = 106:16:1 in marine plankton and oxygen photosynthesis.

Happy Sunday from a dapper Lasagna.
I have been waiting for the acknowledgement, discussion, and decision on authorship of known harassers for literally years.
Now we need to keep it going.
For 1.5yrs I've worked with incredible people for Exoplanet Study Analysis Group (SAG) 22 to investigate a target star archive and what that would mean for the community.
Our final report dropped today:
it's big, it's bold, it has a lot of hyperlinks.

Ever say to yourself, "Wow, I have some sweet stellar abundance data, but what do these units mean? how do I convert this to something else? Ohmaigawd logs?! how do I get a normal number?! And ERRORS??!!" until you're a pile of sad...
Well weep no longer!
What is this awesome figure? It's an interdisciplinary map showing how upcoming exoplanet missions and their data products tie into geoscience observations of an exoplanet's interior, surface, and atmospheric processes -- plus planet demographics! Tell me you love those icons 😉

That article on the Burnout Generation keeps popping up, but I'm honestly too stressed to read it now. So I open it to keep in a tab for later and see the line, "I couldn’t figure out why small, straightforward tasks on my to-do list felt so impossible." Oh...I guess that's me.

. If you want to see what happens when using stellar abundances to sort out rocky planetary interiors, then this talk is for you! Not only will I be going over a LOT of cool papers, but I'll be debuting an exciting new figure. 😉
@fringetracker
It would be one thing if they were inviting some kind of discussion. But this language is toxic because it assumes that their analysis is perfect and subject to only one interpretation. They are trying to end the conversation with no rebuttal...how convenient.
@GlobalHigherEd
Then they asked whether I could create a new undergrad curriculum, a new grad curriculum, do outreach, run a planetarium, start a bridge program, do proposals with nearby institutes, etc. So really, they wanted me to do 2-3 jobs. I ended up accepting somewhere else.
Exoplanets! Formation! Evolution! And you! Participate in a great interdisciplinary workshop with talks+discussions from experts in astronomy and geology to bridge the gap in exoplanet characterization.

Started crying after* teaching my last class...not out of relief, but because I'm so damn proud of my students. They have all made tremendous progress this semester, in different ways. It's filled my heart up so much to watch them grow.

And before you say "he's never done this before" -- yes he has. He's done it to junior women, in his papers that ignored everyone else's work, in his views on diversity. There is a pattern -- but many people are blind to the pattern and THEIR contribution towards it.

Very nice apology and overall explanation of the situation behind the scenes. I think it's great the Greaves team was aprised throughout the process. Thanks to the Villanueva team for hearing the community and keeping us informed.

I want your exoplanet host star questions! What are you dying to research but can't quite achieve because you don't have the data, models, or statistics? What info is important to you?
Exoplanet folks: What open questions do you have about host stars? What sort of information/data do you wish you had to do some (more) awesome science?
I know NASA reports don't always include everything (& everyone), so gimme what you got! I wanna hear from you! Lemme have it!
However, the whisper network knows who is part of the pattern. We keep track of the pattern.
So, it's time for action. Stop letting bad behavior get rewarded, stop letting the Bystander Effect prevent you from speaking up, start doing better...
Start breaking the pattern.

We don't really know what "habitable" means...because we have one datapoint.
It's not the giant planet-metallicity correlation, it's only [Fe/H]. (This misunderstanding has made my life so difficult.)
I'm giving a free public lecture tonight on my research, if people are in the mood to think about planets outside of our Solar System and what makes them habitable. 7-8pm ET via the McMaster Origins Institute.
