PhD - Elevating the voices of Black women across the Black Diaspora | Senior Lecturer in Social Care | Director of Let's Talk Racial Identity | Views own
If you haven't checked out our publication titled "Negotiated spaces: black women academics' experiences in UK universities" yet then the link can be found below. Happy reading, please read, share and circulate! ❤️
If someone tells you they are Neurodivergent (e.g ADHD, Autistic) and how this impacts them... please don't respond with "We are all a little bit like..." or "If you do this it will fix that...". These responses invalidate and minimise individuals experiences and identities.
This video of me skipping with my daughter sums up how I feel right now! I have just received the news that I HAVE BEEN PROMOTED to a Senior Lecturer 🎉❤️
I am very happy to announce engagement in my Doctoral research elevating the voices of Black women is now open!
Contributions are welcome from individuals working in all role types in Universities in the United Kingdom. Please share far and wide!
I wanted to circle back to this tweet (thank you again for the support). There is an assumption in academia and other workplaces that titles equate to wealth 🫠. I work in this role 2 days a week and after promotion this raised my income by £20 a month... £20.
This video of me skipping with my daughter sums up how I feel right now! I have just received the news that I HAVE BEEN PROMOTED to a Senior Lecturer 🎉❤️
Stage 2 of my Doctoral research is a call for contributions to an online conversation about Black women's experiences working in UK universities. Those interested in contributing can contact me at: n.alormele

I have felt such a weight off my shoulders since I stopped comparing my journey to other people's. There is a lot of competition and pressure to do certain things in academia, in a certain way. I now engage in and work in a way that feels right for me.
📣 Super excited for this third and final stage of my doctoral research data collection, in reflective journals 📣. The reflective journals provide collaborators with the freedom of expression in both written and visual formats. Please share far and wide ❤️
I won an award this week as a "Champion for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion" at the Loughborough Academic Awards!! The work I do wouldn't be possible without the amazing friends and colleagues I am surrounded with ❤️
In this blog I reflect on the topics of Black excellence, racial violence and the pressure to hide pain. All of which stem from reflections of the conference I recently attended, including some powerful quotes from Jason Ardey and other panelists.
Being on leave from both my academic position and research feels strange at times. My life is woven around the work I do. Hence my lack of posts. Really enjoying spending time with family and switching off a bit. Here's a pic of my daughters hair, those braids 😍
"Where do you come from?!".. In this blog post I reflect on experiences I have had of racial violence and my identity. This one took me a few weeks to press that publish button! Please read and share with your networks.
My daughter was a victim of racism a few days ago. She was told she is stupid and ugly because she is brown. This was said to her by an older child in public...She is 6 years old 💔
No matter where I am in the world the absence of my father feels heavy. I won't let my grief consume me, my Dad would have wanted me to carry on pursuing my dreams. So here I am in Canada ready for the day and what it brings ❤️
I have been teaching since 2012...for over a decade.. Yet I still get nervous every time I meet a new cohort of students. There is absolutely nothing wrong with being nervous. If anything it demonstrates how much you care!
@UniNhantsFHES
I am happy to announce that I now have a website where I will be sharing updates and blog posts. I wanted to start this off with a blog post titled "A love letter to my hair". Please share far and wide! Happy reading.
Last week I had the pleasure of attending and presenting with colleagues at the annual
@AdvanceHE
EDI conference. It was brilliant to share the work we have been doing and meet/reconnect with some fabulous people ❤️

I am happy to announce I have passed the first year of my PhD after submission of a progress report and meeting with my internal reviewer. I have been complimented on how much passion is apparent in my writing. I am officially in my second year! 🎉
I am excited to share that I have been nominated for a Vice Chancellor's award in the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion category. A true honour to receive this nomination! ❤️
The submission was accepted 👀. I will be sharing details of where to see my first piece of public poetry in a local exhibition soon 🎉. Maybe this is the start of something 🤔
I submitted a piece of poetry for a public exhibition this week. I'm not sure if it will get accepted, however after a lifetime of expressing myself through creative writing and poetry (but never showing the world)... it felt amazing to get my words down and press send ❤️
I am proud to have my work displayed at the Black Heritage: Narratives of Diaspora gallery in the Martin Hall Gallery

My first public exhibit includes a picture clock, symbolising my Ghanaian heritage and poetry (1)
Selfie after my first day back at the gym after 1 month off! I've put on weight and I couldn't manage much.. BUT I feel AMAZING. We always have to start somewhere ❤️
🎙️My Doctoral research will be expanding to Toronto, Canada! I will be visiting Canada in early May to host roundtable discussions with Black women working in University roles. Please get in touch and share this early call for collaborators with your networks 🎙️

senate dinner. I attended this event in my newly appointed role as Co-chair of the BAME staff network ❤️.
Casually refreshing my emails a million times a day, awaiting my ethics approval! I am SO ready to begin data collection and more importantly start receiving responses! Black women working in HEI's voices need to be heard and elevated!
😍 Yesterday I had the honor of listening to 4 amazing Black women sharing their experiences working in UK universities, in one of the online conversations for my doctoral research. These conversations always have a lasting effect on me. Thank you for everyone involved so far ❤️

🚨 Today, to finish off my public lecture, I made an exciting announcement! The launch of my company "Let's Talk Racial Identity". I look forward to sharing more about the work we will be doing! 🚨 Check out the company page here:

I'm so sorry you had to experience this! I remember when I was pregnant and breastfeeding in public always stressed me out. The stress came from other people's comments and looks.
Tomorrow evening I will be a panel member for the below event discussing the experiences of Black women at Loughborough. Including discussions around identity, racism and discrimination. I hope to see some of you there!
I'm excited to announce I will be presenting at Loughborough University's Annual Research conference on 6th December. My research will be presented in the category of vibrant and inclusive communities ❤️
#LboroResConf22
My mum returned from Ghana with gifts for me, including: head scarves, outfits, raw shea butter, African black soap, jewellery and afro combs. I'm very happy!
💭 Today I received a rejection email for something I applied for. I was disappointed however I am certain this will leave me space for bigger and better things. I'm going to see it as a blessing instead, making space for future opportunities ☺️🙏🏾
I use the word impact in terms of reference not to imply negative experiences alone of neurodivergent individuals. The main purpose of this message is a call for people to do better.
I have had so many summer holidays of trying to juggle work and childcare and family time. This summer I am taking two weeks in August where I am COMPLETELY signing off from work and research. It is so important to rest before your body forces you to!

. Today I honour and celebrate my friends, colleagues, aunties, uncles and mentors from the Caribbean community. I ask everyone I'm connected with to not only celebrate this day but pay tribute through activism and advocacy every day!
Happy International Women's Day! I am absolutely honoured to have been given the opportunity to dedicate my career to advocating for Black women and racially minoritised groups! This wouldn't be possible without the amazing women I speak to every day and in my work ♥️🌹
👋🏾 Hello. It's been a while since I introduced myself here. I'm a Black British Ghanaian woman, born in Preston. I have a 7 year old daughter. I am a Researcher and Senior Lecturer in Social Care. I am also the Founder and Director of the below company. Give us a follow ❤️
🆔Who are we? At Let’s Talk Racial Identity our consultancy work is informed by research and lived experiences. Our mission is to create change and amplify voices of racially minoritised individuals and groups.
I am excited to discuss the work I have been doing at this upcoming conference at the University of Northampton taking place on the 4th and 5th July. I am around on both days, with my panel engagement on the 5th ❤️
I really enjoyed delivering a session this morning with Social Care and Community Practice degree students talking about microaggressions, racism and intersectional identities. Here's a lift selfie for you 😂❤️
@UniNhantsFHES
Great end of year sessions today, with our Health and Social Care degree students! We spoke about the rights of Young Carers and had a guest speaker discussing Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities rights. Also a fabulous STEAM event on campus!
@UniNhantsFHES
Yesterday my 5 year old made the choice to climb this wall. She dedicated 1 hour of her play time with a target to reach the top. There were tears, there was laughter.. she refused to give up. She is my biggest inspiration and will always be ❤️.

Today we celebrate Ghana Independence Day. I'm so proud to be Ghanaian! I am currently daydreaming about sitting on Bojo beach with my family! Here's a picture of me standing on the beach so you can daydream with me!
@alwaystheself
The more I see tweets like this and reviews, the more it solidifies my lack of interest in using my hard earned money to watch it in the cinema.
Something I have learnt in my first year as a PhD researcher is definitely that people can make it sound like they understand an issue...on paper. The best way to really know if someone actually gets what they write about is to hear them speak on it! (1)
Super excited to announce we (
@garrett_rhianna
and Iman Khan) have been successful in submission to the

!! I can't wait to share all the amazing things we have been doing and I hope to see some of you there 🙌🏾🎉
Just taking a moment to appreciate the gems this Challenging racisms in HE and beyond conference today is going to bring!
@UniWestminster
. This is only the first few hours!
The biggest difficulty I'm finding in analysing research responses so far is that I want to include EVERYTHING. I want to plaster the voices of the Black women speaking in this work all over the walls of institutions!!
I'm proud of myself today. I've not been well but I'm absolutely passionate about my research and didn't want to miss giving a short talk on it. I managed to show up virtually and I'm happy I did ❤️
I submitted a piece of poetry for a public exhibition this week. I'm not sure if it will get accepted, however after a lifetime of expressing myself through creative writing and poetry (but never showing the world)... it felt amazing to get my words down and press send ❤️
Of course promotions bring other things e.g. career progression and recognition. However I don't think we speak about money enough, so here I am keeping it real.
It was an absolute pleasure attending
@_UoW
yesterday to deliver this guest lecture. What a beautiful campus and fabulous group! Some really engaging conversations were had around white privilege, racism and gender roles. Thanks for having me
@KathrynLyndon
Fantastic guest lecture from
@naomi_alormele
yesterday on the subject of Identity, Race and Gender
@_UoW
. Thank you for an informative and enlightening lecture; the students loved hearing about your experiences, and I learnt a lot too!
#InternationalWomansDay2023
In September I shared the below tweet. These statements have been said to me and I was writing about my own journey. Building on this I have decided to take the leap and share this blog post. Please read and share, it is so important to raise awareness
If someone tells you they are Neurodivergent (e.g ADHD, Autistic) and how this impacts them... please don't respond with "We are all a little bit like..." or "If you do this it will fix that...". These responses invalidate and minimise individuals experiences and identities.
So amazing having my friend and colleague
@PhilliusFogg
guest lecture
@UniNhantsFHES
today on the topic of LGBTQ+ rights in a turbulent time. Thank you so much for a brilliant session! Check Phil out! They are doing amazing work!
Yesterday was the PhD awards
@lborouniversity
. It was an absolute honor to be nominated and huge congrats to the award winners . A wonderful evening spent with brilliant minds, real future leaders!
Today is International Women's Day and in honour of this day I have written a blog linked... "You talk about a level playing field but the ground isn't level".

Today I wrote a list of all the things I have achieved this year for my end of year PhD report. I am so proud of myself!
Only close friends know the personal difficulties I have had in the background. I really have come so far ❤️
It appears
#Northampton
is trending so here is my usual selfie before teaching today! A brilliant day, full of thought provoking conversations on institutional racism, microaggressions, colourism and much more!
@UniNhantsFHES
I hesitated in sharing this, with it being so close to home, however I feel it's important to highlight how prevalent racial violence and racism is in the UK. It's absolutely disgusting.
The conference today was full of such rich inspiring conversations! I am thankful for all the amazing panelists, reconnecting with friends and meeting: Professor Jason Ardey
@Muna_Abdi_Phd
@Maco1e
@fez_sibanda
@delso_batista
and many more ❤️🎉
Today marked my first day of research in Ontario, elevating the voices of Black women working in Universities across the Black Diaspora.
If you meet the below criteria there's still time to take part!
✅ Identify as a Black woman
✅ Work in a University in Ontario
📢 For those who attended my recent public lecture you will have heard me announce the launch of my company! Please follow and share the new company twitter page ❤️. There will be some exciting work posted on there in the coming weeks 🤩

It was a pleasure to be a part of the "Misognoir panel" yesterday evening. It was super empowering to share personal experiences of racism, identity and representation. Huge thanks to all those involved and in attendance 🙌🏾
Selfie from the first day of teaching on my rights and inclusion module with Health and Social Care degree students. A great session today speaking about our values and the experiences that shape them!
@UniNhantsFHES
Adaptations for staff members with Neurodivergent profiles and other needs.. This morning I had a meeting with my team and they respected my request for a break in the middle of the meeting. This helped reduce my experiences of sensory overload significantly ⭐
Nope this isn't me. When it's time for me to take a break from work and research... I take a break. It is so important to look after your physical and mental health. Allow yourself that protected time!
If you appreciate someone please tell them! There are so many people who struggle with low self esteem, as a result of the continuous poor treatment from others. Even the smallest act of recognition and kindness can have a huge impact on someone's life!
It feels SO good to fully shut off from work and research over Christmas. I love what I do, however because of how passionate I am and the emotional labour of the topics I read/research/speak to, it can sometimes be all consuming.
Early on I would be so impressed if someone had written a piece on racism in the academy. However when provided the opportunity to speak/listen to a writer (sometimes) there is no depth to their knowledge. (2)
📢 Tonight at 7pm I will be the speaker for the final Black History 365 Public Lecture of the year hosted by
@CSSDLearning
. Don't forget to register and share 🎉

A hugely important charity and area that isn't spoken about enough. Give
@ChildrenHandS
a follow and raise awareness where you can for children impacted by parental imprisonment.
As someone with a Neurodiverse profile I find some unspoken rules in communication (in a British context) very odd. 1. Asking a question that isn't really a question. 2. Asking how someone is while walking past them. 3. Answering a question honestly being frowned upon
Something most people don't know about me is that I used to write spoken word pieces, poetry and songs. I haven't put anything on paper for a very long time (probably about 8 years). Today I wrote something for the first time and it felt amazing!
I am currently at the Black Research Futures Fair taking place at the University of Birmingham. This has been a great event so far with so many inspiring speakers!
