Ohhh, a hashtag i can really get down to!
Hey
#MeetTheTranslator
I'm a Japanese <-> English translator based in Osaka. Credited titles include Loc supp for that one rando Ninja Turtles game from Platinum Games and NinoKuni 2, and loc stuff for Nintendo's Just Dance Wii (Jp ver)
they're created a Japanese anime database where you can search through 15,000 titles starting from when the first animation was released in 1917. you can search by director, title and year.
can't wait to roam through this and be disappointed when i can't watch something😂
Just saw part of the interview with the education committee and they were basically like "well cornrows aren't 清潔 (neat, clean)" and a lot of blaming the kid and his family and just... A whole bunch of garbage
A Black Japanese student said he just wanted to honor his roots with his hairstyle. He ended up not participating in his own graduation. Details on what happened below, including a statement from the Prefectural Education Committee that adds more fuel to the fire...
"other countries have been working really hard and increased their rank, and as a result, our rank has dropped"
-comment from gender equality govt office

it's not like it's impossible for this to be done live-action??? the Broadway version got it right and they can literally only use a small theater stage.
Me standing on the platform waiting for the train when a Japanese woman just jumps in front of me to get on the train first: ah, this just be the Japanese art of 割り込み 😌😌😌 when all sense of order and common decency are abandoned for a seat on the train 😌😌😌😌
some of yall don't know the first thing about translation/localization and it shows.
it's not about making a literal A to B translation.
components are often added or taken away from a sentence to make it sound natural for native speakers of the language.
Not Kishida saying folks need to pick up new skills while on maternity/paternity leave 🥲 bruh they're literally learning how to take care of a tiny human thoooo
I feel bad folks can't put that on their resume because if a child showed up at my house, I wouldn't know what to do
I think it's wild ppl that don't speak the lang of the country they're in, nor do they engage with the politics or community on any level beyond tourist, can just be like "I've never experienced racism here"
Bro you literally can't understand what they're saying about you huh
I'm actually working on a project right now that is essentially doing rewrites of a bunch of text that was very likely machine translated. Our company tried to get the client to pay for retranslation since in the end, that's what we're doing.
Guess what the company said 🤗🤗
Manga localization technology company Orange Inc. announced they’ve raised approximately USD 19.5 million fundraising in pre-series A financing (financing round led by Shogakukan, ANRI, GFR Fund, more), with funds used to assist their product and launch their digital manga store
definitely went thru a period in japan where leaving the house was hard because of all the comments i would hear on the trains or walking around (ppl assume you don't understand Jpn). pre-affordable noise-canceling earphones too
feeling blessed for that remote work life frfr
Shota sent me the Yahoo version of this article and the waaaaaay commenters were blaming parents for "not confirming with the school"
I'm sorry they probably didn't know he needed permission to wear his hair in a style that's sensible for his hair type.
It’s come the light that a public high school in Himeji, Hyogo Prefecture didn’t let an 18yo American-Japanese Black student attend graduation because he had his hair in cornrows, and instead made him sit alone on the 2nd floor. The student said -
i had to make a jp version of that meme cuz ppl been testing my patience.
i don't know if being a clown is really a thing in japan, but it should be. because this is how they be looking.
me, reading up on this whole "we hate localizers" nonsense and then reading how all these folks are "just gonna go learn japanese now"
okay hun have at it.
Guy. GUYS.
Sadly, having an N2 or N1 cert does not mean you're fluent. My old job literally had to fire a dude with N1 and a Masters because he flubbed nearly an entire game's worth of translation.
I wish it did make ppl fluent cuz it woulda made my life easier at the time 😩😩😩
so according to this Japanese news program BLM and ppl calling for the abolition of the police is directly responsible for the rise in crime in the u.s.
Specifically in Atlanta
😒🙄🙄🙄
I... Am just gonna stop watching the news here.
If you're not out there doing things just because they seem fun and interesting, I urge you to please go do them, even if you're not good at them.
You will meet people, you may scream or cry, but I promise it's so much better than sitting home all day sad trust me I know 🫠🫠
On the news, they're talking about reasons ppl refuse to take PCR tests after being n close contact w infected ppl.
The most common reason being they can't go to work.
So... They rather just go to work possibly carrying the virus. If that ain't peak selfishness, idk what is mang
today in the latest round of "i may be jpn, but clearly my eng is better than a native speaker"
a person came back with edits saying my translation wasn't "concise" enough, and then google translated over everything????? HUH????
please i hope your company fails its presentation
me, showing the 🇯🇵client an english language industry reference so they know how a word is used in english.
🇯🇵client, showing me a japanese-language only reference about how the word is used in english (with no refs to english sites)

So my partner has decided he will leave his job (careworker) at the end of this year. After a few years of working 10 to 12 hr shifts where he has to take "courses" before he can go home, being forced to cover for ppl that have children, not being allowed to take any holidays cuz
a bunch of weirdos have already started review bombing
#THELITTLEMERMAID
on Yahoo!映画 because they have too much time.
luckily, i have a yahoo account and finished my translation work early soooo 🙃
yall i was doing some quick maths about my income last year and got so mad it made me stop skating 😭😭
so i made roughly 5 million yen last year, right? Highest i've ever gotten after 14 years in Japan (higher than what i made at my old company even). Awesome, right?
also, why do ppl think localized content is just for hardcore fans??
content is localized to reach as many ppl as possible. throwing a bunch of japanese phrases because "an english equivalent doesn't exist" (🫠) is an excellent way to limit your audience.
If any ladies in or around Osaka are looking for a ladies clinic, I recommend Ninomiya Ladies Clinic. All the doctors are women and they're very nice and thorough. (I don't think they speak English though)
Bullet Train is one goofy little Japantasy film 🤣
I thought the characters were really fun but damn if I was going "nope, that's not a thing, trains don't look like that, trains don't have overnight service, that's definitely not what Kyoto station looks like" THE ENTIRE TIME🤣
Japanese-born makeup artist apologizes for becoming an American citizen. Says he was 'tired of the culture in Japan' and feels like he wouldn't have achieved his dreams of he stayed in Japan.
Felt that 😫😫
i secretly have a problem with calling anything other their AA food soul food.... like that's so weird to me??? 😂😂😂
there's a very specific history behind the word and the food, so when ppl say 'Osaka soul food' i immediately go "oh, yall had slaves in osaka?"
I have so many Japanese friends and coworkers that are experiencing or HAVE experienced burnout from this bullshit. And to make matters work, the mental healthcare institutes are not equipped to handle ppl suffering from depression or anxiety because of work.
Let us be clear: Japanese business culture is the cancerous tumor that is killing the actual nation and actual culture of Japan. It may have the same DNA as Japanese tradition, but it is not the same. It weaponizes social expectations to extract every last capitalist yen.
now that japan has 3 medals in skateboarding, maybe the police and security guards will stop kicking the skateboarders out of *checks notes* everywhere.
or at least lose some of the "no skateboarding" signs in parks at least???
client that cannot read english: i think the translation is fine but.... maybe we need more line breaks? i feel like it might be hard to read....
me, not knowing where to start with this explanation: ....
Found a lovely ladies clinic in Shinsaibashi. They played Beyonce in the lobby and I felt protected 😌😌
No but srsly, it's a female obgyn who was very kind. She knows medical terms in English so you don't have to struggle to find the right jpn word.
Is there an English thread that keeping track of the number of "refrigerator malfunctions" happening with the vaccines in Japan?
this has happened several times a week for months now.
in this recent case, the cleaning staff hit the plug while mopping😅
Going to my first Japanese Communist Party meeting for my area. It's mostly women in their 60s which is surprising.
Gonna chat to a 議員 about some things with some snacks : 3
I wish I had my high school yearbook so I can take a photo of all the not 清潔 hairstyles in that senior photo section cuz man school administrators woulda been buuuusyyyyy 😒

i've seen the broadway version (in jp) and it's different but definitely still works and creates a whole new (haha) and enjoyable experience for the audience. i don't understand why they didn't take more cues from broadway 😥😥
been watching Queen Charlotte to heal from the hot garbage qrt and replies on the disney japan tweet about Ariel.
it's been so refreshing to watch black women sitting around in gorgeous gowns, sipping tea, making power moves, and looking gorgeous 😌😌😌
some jpn child has gone on national TV to talk about how stinky his locks are......
and this is why i'm generally opposed to non-black ppl having locks. yall don't even be taking care of them 😭😭😭
I don't know what it is about Japanese national art galleries, but they are so large and feel so so empty......
So many places to eat yet so little art.....
I've seen folks making light of these numbers since country xyz is doing double or more, but what you fail to realize is that TESTING IS STILL VERY TIGHTLY CONTROLLED in Japan.
And Tokyo only has ONE center where any1 can get tested (if they make a reservation which u can't rn)
So the govenor of Hiroshima is encouraging widespread testing to help curve the spread. They also appear to be the only prefecture offering free govt pcr tests?? Ppl can take them at train stations or drug stores.
If only Osaka had the sense to do the same 😤😤😩
Some of these talking heads on the news REALLLLY think Obon is a concept so culturally specific to Japan that foreigners wouldn't be able to understand why people MUST return to their family's home.
Like other cultures don't have similar once-a-year family-based celebrations.
Directly in front of me, I witness the art of 足広げ in which the elder salaryman, tired from a long day of おもてなし and 客さんは神 decides to take it out on the other passengers of the train by spreading his legs open as far as possible 😌😌😌😌😌
so my new job has me going through these JP comments on the internet and let me tell yall
it's exhausting. there are a lot of ppl out here that think black people are just dangerous criminals and i'm tired of having to explain shit cuz jfolks can't be bothered to face reality
so i had this lady on the train ask me to stop using my phone, quite adamantly, cuz she got a pacemaker...but she aint say nothin to the jp ppl on their phone next to her til the jp lady next to me was like ' u should tell everybody else too'
sis came thru with the assist 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
me, next time someone tries to complain about the quality of a translation: "it's not that the quality of the work has gone down, you've just gotten so much better at parsing the nuances of languages that, as a matter of course, the quality appears to have decreased."
client: hi, so i know we asked you to translate part of our menu, but to save on costs, we translated the rest ourselves. can you do a check of the menu graphic to make sure everything's ok?
me: sure!
me, 3hrs later sending back a report with 50+ issues:
i can promise you pokemon probably wouldn't have taken off like it did if Ash was just called "Satoshi" and charmander was "hitokage"
and i can double promise you American content isn't popular in japan because dialogue is a 1:1 literal translation (it absolutely is not)
and subtracting content from the target translation doesn't make it bad or inaccurate.
a bad translation is when the original meaning isn't understood by the target audience and this can happen even when everything in the sentence has technically been "translated correctly".
Wakana Goto, 28, said at one rally: "In Japan, with its reputation as one of the world's safest countries, I have been exposed to sexual harassment since the age of three, forced to get used to it and to learn to deal with it."
'Protecting rapists': Japan's outdated rape laws fail women, say protesters.
In latest case, a man has walked free despite a court ruling that he sexually assaulted his daughter for years
📸 Women's rights protesters are taking to the streets in Japan
can confirm that what "black ppl look good in" in Japan is often a very narrow category. and it's almost inclusively hip hop things so.
everything else, we're either scary (like me having my afro out at the kobe matsuri 🙃) or "cool" (????)
Also, as a kimono stylist, I frequently hear praise for white people wearing kimono by Japanese people in Japan
…and have also literally been told that Black people don’t look good in kimono (?!?!?!) by other Japanese
so no, let’s not pretend this is all the same
for the ppl out there that think Japan's sexism is some traditional cultural mindset and Western feminists shouldn't complain so much... Japan has Japanese feminists too soooooooo
me, signing up for 5000 diff US taxes services that are supposedly made to help international residents file, only to be hit with the "use your mobile number to verify your account 🤗🤗"
...you mean the US mobile number i don't have because i'm not a resident... that one?

Wanted to wear a costume for my English cafe's online party. Then I remembered a had a dress that would work for Morticia so here we are lmao
I guess it's nice to know that poorly educated politicians aren't just an American issue 🫠🫠
The QRTs are hilarious though plz check them out (that's the only reason I used the tweet as opposed to a screenshot lmao)
Watching vaccination pictures from Japan and from abroad, it always astonish me, that abroad the shot is done by one person, normally a nurse, whereas in Japan at least 2 people and sometimes more are involved. And the shot is done by a doctor, nurse just roll up the shirt.
@my2k
They forgot to mention the outrageous cost of living (or how difficult it is to find avail. childcare, let alone affordable childcare) in most places coupled with stagnant wages.
But nah, throw it on us I guess 🙄
Me, watching all these ppl talking about moving to the inaka to live in an akiya after just having spent the weekend in inaka
But by all means, please do. Maybe it'll lower the price of buying housing in cities
A great piece of the current state of women's issues and harassment in Japan.
Also that mention of UNESCO World Heritage Site that half the world ain't allowed to visit. But traditions AMIRITE👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾
"Government raises alert status, continues testing a few people as possible, considers thinking about making a suggestion to ask people to stay home and take it upon themselves to just not get infected plz thanks."
🙃
I really don't appreciate the whole 'Japanese animation is more complex than western' tone throughout the article. It all depends on the show and what the show is trying to offer. (can't tell me that oshiritantei, the butt detective, is more complex than magic school bus 😂)
Anime brings in more than $19 billion a year.
But many of the animators behind the onscreen magic are broke, and face grim working conditions that can lead to burnout and even suicide.
