I am elated to announce that I will be pursuing my PhD in Clinical Psychology
@CityCollegeNY
. I am honored to continue to learn and provide services to Harlem and other communities throughout NYC. This Bedstuy girl is on her way to help improve the mental health of black folks 🤎
Hi! I’m Najé and I am an alum and proud volunteer of the Shawn Carter Foundation Scholarship. I would love to detail all the ways in which this organization and thus Jay Z have helped me out (a thread)
In the fall of my senior year, I began attending the SCF HBCU Workshop series where we got help with our personal statements, CV’s and overall material for college applications. The workshop is held every year to not only help with this but prep for the HBCU bus tour
In the spring of 2017, we toured HBCUs from Atlanta to PA. They organization submitted our application material to the schools we were touring (they also paid for our apps on the Black Common App) so we got on site admissions. Makes you feel like a rockstar
So yes, big support throughout college. But the foundation took their support for me a step further. In 2018, I was chosen with three other SCF scholars to do a two week exchange program in London/NYC. We created a mock brand campaign for Ford.
So if you’re keeping track 1. College Preparation/Scholarship 2. Exchange Program 3. Teaching how to invest in stocks (also, financial planning, retirement and credit management are also taught through these workshops, it is open to any NYC adult and if interested, hmu ☺️)
Last summer we celebrated our 20 year anniversary!! I was afforded the amazing opportunity to not only talk about my experiences in a documentary (that’s soon to come out and is directed by an SCF alum) but I got to speak at the gala ☺️
Of course, I received the scholarship throughout my time at Penn State which helped TREMENDOUSLY with cost of attendance. We’re also REQUIRED to complete 40 hours of community service (I might have the number of hours wrong) in order to keep our scholarship.
This next part is incredibly important. In the Fall of 2019, I began attending the “Bridges to Wealth” workshop series in collab with UPenn. Through these meetings (which still happen 1xmonth) I was taught how to invest in the stock market and added the community stock portfolio
Hey! I saw a repost about the volunteering aspect and the requirement for the scholarship. The motto of the foundation is “lift as we climb” and we are constantly taught to pour into other peoples lives, a requirement like that ensures that the loop of “lifting” continues.
Branching off from Bridges to Wealth, in 2021, the SCF piloted a program called Generational Wealth Warriors where myself and other SCF alum not only learned these skills, got funding to start investing in stocks, BUT we got to teach communities of our choice how to invest
But overall I hope this thread shows you the many ways in which they have lifted me. I’m only put one alum and this foundation has been in existence for 20 years so imagine the full extent. I enjoy coming back every year and helping with the college workshop series
Because going to and making through college was a journey and I feel the personal responsibility of helping other minoritized individuals get in to college.
For those interested in pursuing a career in MH, especially a PhD in Clinical Psych. I did 3 application cycles and learned the following things
#BIMHTips
Hey Famalay 👋🏾. My name is Najé James. I’m a research assistant with the Healthy Brain Network at the Child Mind Institute. I’m interested in improving black MH, especially for Caribbean Americans, culturally relevant treatment plans and access to it!
#BlackinPsychRollCall
@MirandaLabCUNY
Thank you so much Dr. Miranda! I was having this conversation with my mentor, and the fear of notifying early career students and people and places to avoid because of their treatment for protection but also the need for us to know. We DO need to know where we’ll be respected!
Hey Famalay! I’m Najé, a 1st year Clinical Psych PhD student at CCNY! My research seeks to improve Black mental health through understanding identity throughout the Diaspora, it’s impact on engaging in treatment and accessible interventions.

Congratulations to everyone who has submitted their grad school applications today. Extra special shout-out to those applying to Clinical Psych programs. Please use this time to take a breather and practice some self care. AND STAY OFF GRADCAFE AND SDN!!!
Hello Again Famalay! My name is Najé, and I am an incoming Clinical Psych PhD student interested in issues related to Black MH, identity factors influencing help seeking within the diaspora and access to culturally relevant treatment through Collab Care Models and Community Orgs
Can’t believe today was the last day of the fall semester. I completed my first ever semester in grad school 🥲 finishing up finals and it’ll be on to the next adventure starting in January 🥹
Coming on here and seeing amazing black women dissertation writing/defending their dissertations is so inspiring for me, especially as the fatigue of 2nd year is probably at its highest. Keep posting for the students like me who are exhausted but motivated 🤎
As a new semester approaches, I want to encourage all incoming PhD’ers to make a list of things they would like to accomplish or experience throughout their time in grad school. List isn’t definitive but a good way of being accountable, curious and mindful of the journey
My mom and friends know what I want to do. But can we talk about how the misconceptions affect dating? Don’t let me tell a man I’m trying to be a psychologist cause the first thing he gonna say is “oh so you analyzing me right now?” Boy, No! RELAXX! 😒
#BlackinPsychMisconceptions
Totally just realized that I haven’t advertised this, but I can send over my application materials from last year as an example to those applying to Clinical Psych PhD programs! Just shoot me a DM!
What’s my steez? I am proud Bajan and Jamaican woman from Bedstuy, Brooklyn, NEW YORK! That affects how I walk, how I talk and how my black girl magic shows up, especially in the field of psych. Also, I like to style and profile, while doing research work! 👸🏾
#BIPScholasticStyle
I’ll say it every year, congratulations to those who submitted applications today to Clin Psych programs. Please take the time out to celebrate and breathe before the next phase of the application process. Good luck!! 🫶🏾
My
#BlackinPsychJourney
began at the age of 6 when my mother was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. The amazing doctors and nurses at Memorial Sloan would tell me that helping to keep my mom happy and in good spirits would help her to beat cancer.

in my free time, I love to eat… I mean cook… I mean, cook then eat lol. I run a very small business called “Cooking W/ Jé” where I cater and teach people how to make delicious dishes

Working at
@childmindinst
has been incredibly rewarding, and it feels so good to know that my teeny tiny contributions to our work matter 💛 happy to have even been nominated
HAHA it worked! Happy to announce I won the MindLogger App Competition
@childmindinst
winning a grand prize of $1500. My app “Famalay” serves as a cultural intervention to provide anxiety relief for black children through music 🤎
Hey Famalay! I will be starting my PhD in Clinical Psychology this upcoming fall. To prepare, I’ve created this registry of items I will need. I would truly appreciate any contributions towards the items in my registry along with your continued support 🥹🤎
I am absolutely not going back and fourth about the diaspora war happening because of my tweet, because it does not have anything to do with the point of the thread. The fact that it even got that far is insane.
Excited to have had the opportunity to present the preliminary findings for my 2nd year Research and Scholarship Project at our 9th Annual Research and Scholarship Day. Huge shoutout to all of the presenters, but especially to my fellow cohort mates for our amazing posters
#CO22
Very excited to share that I will be a panelist for the Woman’s History Month panel
@childmindinst
. Elated for the opportunity to share space and conversation with my fellow colleagues
A night of celebrating legacy, excellence and inspiration. Thank you to the family
@ShawnCarterSF
for pouring into me from the age of 17. Cheers to our 20th anniversary 🥂
1. MENTORSHIP. Get trusted mentors who are already students or who have a PhD to help you figure out next steps, preparing material, and general advice on motivation and staying the course. Idk what I would do without
@curlyclinician
and
@tdotrenae
constantly plugging me in!
As of this morning, I have completed 100 hours of therapy with my patients. Can’t believe how fast time has flew and I have grown tremendously as a clinician from May to now. The journey to 500 continues, and I’m excited for the journey ahead.
Finals were submitted last week. First docs are next week so I won’t say I’m officially done with my first year just yet. But, I’m done with the first year of classes as a PhD student. Many moments of doubt but comments like this let’s me know that I’m on the right track.
Hi! I’m Najé and I am an alum and proud volunteer of the Shawn Carter Foundation Scholarship. I would love to detail all the ways in which this organization and thus Jay Z have helped me out (a thread)
Finishing up my first week of the PhD, and I have never felt more aligned in my life. I was so nervous to start, but it has been an absolute joy to do the readings and share my thoughts and opinions on the material with my professors and cohort.
I would LOVE to work with fellow researchers who investigate topics related to the development of young Black women, family dynamics, mentorship and girlhood 🤎 DMs are always open for collaboration
Please tell these committees about all of the things you do both in and out of your academic work. Give them charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent (thx Rupaul!)
The
@ShawnCarterSF
is celebrating its 20th anniversary dedicated to bridging the opportunity gap that exists across the education system. I am forever grateful to the home team for the ways they have invested in my success. Read more about it here
5. DONT SHRINK YOURSELF IN YOUR MATERIALS! It took me 3 cycles before I started to become more assertive about all my experiences, why I took them on and how they shaped my interest. I was afraid they looked inferior to others. What you think is little can have so much impact.
an amazing black therapist on tiktok said that the most rewarding part about being a therapist is cheering people on, and that just rocked me! she’s so right! its an honor to be there for people in that way when they may not have had that before
last year in my
#blackinmh
intro, I talked about my identity as a Caribbean woman from Bedstuy and how it shows out in the way I style and profile while working. Yesterdays outfit is a prime example of that.
It was so amazing getting to meet the applicants this past week and learning about their interests professionally and in the program. Tomorrow will be one year since I’ve interviewed for CCNY 🥹. Crazy how time flies! Wishing all applicants much success this season 🤎
Administered the WIAT-4 to a participant for the first time since our transition from the WIAT-III the other day. The way I was struggling to turn the pages of the stimulus book while holding the record form and administration manual because of my nails? Major L 😭😭😭😭
Hello Everyone!
I have a mentee who is a recent undergrad graduate looking for clinically focused positions to build her CV in preparation for applying to grad school. Would anyone have any suggestions for a position like this in NYC?
Next week I have to figure out how to be a therapist and be there for my patients (and myself) knowing that both they and I have witnessed what has happened in the space they have their therapy. My training space. The community I am an active member of. What the fuck.
In 2019 I knew I wanted to further my relationship with God. I joined a Bible study group with friends that implored me to read Gods word and to pray fervently throughout the trials of 2020. From having Covid myself, to seeing people pass, to everything with BLM
#BlackinPsych2020
Got the very difficult news yesterday that my grandmother passed away. I’ve grieved before for family friends, but this is the first death of an immediate family member. She would hand write notes like this and send them to me while I was in college from Barbados. RIP Gran Gran
Hey Famalay! Does anyone have a master list of things incoming graduate school students should be purchase to help them prepare? You can comment random things under here or lists of things you bought before the start of your first semester, thanks a lot! 🤎
Bro my professor just had us line up from lightest to darkest in the classroom.
I as the only dark skinned and only Black person in the Room am feeling unnecessarily humiliated. But I’ve already used my 1 absence and can’t flee 😭
Excited to post more tips and advice from admissions and the application cycle to life lessons I’ll learn throughout my time in school 🤎
Also available to offer pearls of wisdom through video of panel discussion
2. RESEARCH EXPERIENCE. Definitely depends on the institutions admission wants. In my honest opinion, quality > quantity, especially when it’s consistent with your interest. Getting authorship, data analysis in R/SPSS, RA/RC positions are usually good
I was also reflecting this weekend, I’ve known since I was 6 that I wanted to be a psychologist. However, it was mostly people from church or Christian’s in general who would constantly tell me that “psychology is a dead field” and “you won’t make any money as a psychologist.”
Year 2 second semester and I am exhausted, there’s so much in my plate and I know it’s not like I can’t do it but I’m tired and nervous about the amount of fatigue I feel
I have a presentation this evening. Definitely nervous, so in an attempt to “fake it till I make it” and give myself some confidence, I’ve decided to beat my face and wear the most flyest pair of gold hoops I own
Gianna Floyd said last year “Daddy changed the world” and I can’t help but replay that in my brain as I process this verdicts decision. She wasn’t wrong. This is the start.
Currently scoring my first Rorschach administered in over a year. It’s so fascinating what you get from it. Truly grateful to be receiving psychodynamic training.
