Traditional #oranaise attire. The bluza wahraniya (بلوزة وهرانية) is originally from Tlemcen, but many Tlemceni families settled in Wahran so it naturally became the city’s staple dress.

Algeria is regularly cited for being a prime example of settler-colonialism in length and form. But 132 years is in reality only a blimp of a much longer and more vast history, and the centuries that lie before are wherefrom we truly channel our cultural identity

I think this tweet commits the very mistake it purports to condemn. If there are Muslims who view pre-modern Islamic lands as a utopia of piety, there are just as many who dwindle it down to centuries of rampant “debauchery” — the same errored approach to Muslim historiography
@sharghzadeh
شرق‌زده sharghzadeh

I don't understand why many Muslims view pre-modern Islamic lands as a utopia of piety. A basic gloss of any Arabic or Persian texts reveals that debauchery and sin was commonplace or even accepted in most lands. Prostitution, drinking, gambling, etc often occurred in the open.
