My first solo-authored journal article is now on Taylor & Francis Online. Mixed feelings! Happy to see my name in Journalism Practice. But experiencing anxiety also: did I check all typos, grammatical errors, or other writing issues? 😀
@ZulkarnainSaer
How can a station chief of a professional secret service compromise cover to persuade a politician to participate in a disputed election in a neighboring country? Absurd! Yet another Nijjar-like scandal under PM Modi.
The anti-Indian sentiment is so high in Bangladesh that the PR team at the Australian High Commission in Bangladesh knows most Bangladeshis will support the opponent of today's Australia-India match
@dhume
It is challenging for India to maintain friendship with Muslim countries under PM Modi. With all the BJP's anti-Muslim rhetoric, even a secular progressive Muslim would think twice about publicly supporting India. I predict the "India Out" campaign will be popular.
"The sad reality of Islamophobia is that you can pretty much say anything about Muslims, and almost no one will bat an eyelid, and yet we claim to take it seriously." --Naz Shah MP.

We are taking steps to impose visa restrictions on individuals who have undermined the democratic election process in Bangladesh. The United States is committed to supporting free and fair elections that are carried out in a peaceful manner.
@HindolSengupta
Do you understand what the "ethnically cleaning" means? The real history is most Hindus had voluntarily left the then East Pakistan by exchanging houses with Muslims in India.
Much of the journalism research on local/community newspapers is: on how they are dying and their impacts on the communities, but less research is on why the local newspapers fail to make a profit. The focus should be on finding a sustainable business model for news organizations
15 out of 19 hijackers of the 9/11 attacks were Saudi citizens. And yesterday Saudi Arabia got UK electronic visa waiver status. The decision makes the narrative of denying visas on security and human rights grounds a joke. If you are rich, you are welcome everywhere.
I am not submitting any paper to ICA this year. So the deadline does not affect me. But, I am sad that I will miss all the ICA conference-related tweets. They have been entertaining. 😀
@dhume
In the short term, I don't see an "India out" campaign in Bangladesh because the pro-Indian ruling party successfully eliminated most anti-Indian politicians. In the long run, India has risks. The youths are exceptionally anti-Indian.
From social media participation observation, I can say a large number of Africans and Asians are supporting Putin. I think this is a failure of the U.S.’s soft power strategies
Muhoozi Kainerugaba, son of Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni on Ukraine:
"The majority of mankind (that are non-white) support Russia's stand in Ukraine. Putin is absolutely right!"
@deepscribble
And taking inspiration from Bangladesh's path, let's defeat fundamentalism in all of South Asia, including India. Let's fight together against Hindutva fanatics.
At least 1000 people, including hundreds of children, were killed in a climate catastrophe in Pakistan in late August. The inadequate coverage in the Western media is yet another proof that news values vary based on the cultural identity of victims.

@MEAIndia
Since 9 million Indians work in the Gulf countries, India had to change its initial position in the Israel-Palestine war. The economy always drives politics. I think Saudi's firm position in the Palestine cause influenced PM Modi's shifting policies.
@SuellaBraverman
If Britain had said "enough is enough" to immigrants when your parents migrated, Suella Braverman MP may not be here. Let's be thankful for immigration.
It is interesting to note that in a country where democracy has been struggling for a decade, we discuss various rights-related issues but fail to address the decline of democracy. How can we ensure representation without democracy?
You don't hear about the 13 Thai workers taken hostage by Hamas and released with other Israeli citizens. Israeli officials also didn't mention them as if they were nonexistent. There is a grave dehumanization of how overseas workers are treated in the Middle East.
@ashoswai
No one loves a neighbor who interferes with internal matters; forms an unholy relationship with a highly unpopular member of the family to annihilate opponents.
One lesson the pandemic has taught us−populist leaders are not good at handling crisis−Trump's USA, Bolsonaro's Brazil, and Modi's India all are good examples
@NaymaQayum
International media outlets are mainly dependent on local journalists for the coverage of countries like Bangladesh. It would be interesting to see if the problem is with the reporting or the gatekeeping.
@SanUvacha
@WajahatAli
Hi Sandeep, do you understand what"dehumanizing" means? Can you define it? And how can this be applied to Mehdi Hasan's criticism of Hindutva terrorism?
@TapashishC
@HindolSengupta
We have similar stories. Muslims in West Bengal had to migrate to the East, facing persecution. I am not denying there was persecution on both sides of the border. When we try to term this "ethnic cleansing," it creates problems. 1947 Partition is unique and needs objective take.
When I see International Communication Association's conference venues, it seems "international" means only the Western world. 2022 - Paris, France, 2023 - Toronto, Canada, 2024 - Gold Coast, Australia, 2025 - Denver, Colorado, USA.Probably, no Africa conference in ICA's history
During pandemic, almost everyone (including me) on social media was virologist. And in Russia’s war in Ukraine, we all are IR/security experts. Why should anyone pursue a PhD in this age?
News fixers are the most vulnerable sub-group in journalism. But, there is almost no scholarship on this topic. Why? That news fixers are mainly from non-Western countries might be a reason. De-westernizing journalism scholarship might solve many problems journalism is facing now
That's a misleading analysis of history. For most Bangladeshis, the events of 1971 were not a sad occurrence. It was during this time that Bengalis experienced self-rule and felt a sense of liberation.
The year 1971 is the saddest chapter in the history of Pakistan. Not just for Pakistan but for Muslims of the entire subcontinent, if not Muslims of the world. Some say, 1971 constitutes the 'Second Grenada'.
Prominent Bengali political figure, Abdul Hamid Bhashani was so

One issue with the IDF's videos of the war is that they do not display the targets (Hamas fighters) that they are attacking. This is in stark contrast to the war footage released by Hamas militants. The IDF is not performing well in the information war aspect of this conflict.
@JonathanACBrown
True! Also, academia stands as the most influential soft power of the American empire. The way some politicians have deliberately targeted it is concerning. It will unquestionably cause damage to America's global influence.
@nntaleb
I am highly disappointed with Israel's information war tactics in this conflict. I had believed the Israelis to be highly skilled in public relations campaigns, but they have made a series of mistakes in this war.
@DerekJGrossman
The incumbent Bangladesh government can do anything to win Indian support, even if they are against national interests, because it relies on Indian backing to be in office. Most Bangladeshi people would not take India's side in a Canada-India tension.
One of my hypotheses is that half of the life of an academic is wasted on stress related to conference/journal submissions, rejections, and tweeting about this. Now need some empirical findings. 😀
U.S. universities need more research on the college town housing crisis. Almost every college town in the west has serious housing shortage. In some places, getting a house is the most difficult part of a student life.
While celebrating this recognition, we should not forget that rickshaw pulling is inhumane and a feudal practice. It is cruel and exploitative. Poor people are only in this occupation because they have no alternative.
Universities should really have a Zoom classroom policy-particularly whether students should be allowed to turn their video off the entire class. Some students tend to do so. And, they feel offended when they are asked to turn their video on.
BREAKING: Three Israeli hostages killed by the IDF were shirtless and holding up a makeshift white flag, an Israeli military official has said.
An inquiry into the incident has found the hostages were fired upon against Israel's rules of engagement.
@clary_co
The target audience for this information is not you, I guess. 😀That's why you cannot take away anything from it. But the domestic audience will love it.
@MattooShashank
Some Indians see Bangladesh and other Indian neighbors in the way some Westerners see India. Commentators pretend to be an expert in Bangladesh though they do not know the history. Do you know both in 2014 and 2018, the Awami League came to power in disputed elections?
Just had a panic attack during my visa interview for ICA because my interviewer was yelling at me. I still can’t breathe well and am shaking. Just international student things 🙃
I rarely get angry at these shitshows but boy am I fuming right now.
@MAarafat71
Some people may find the tweet convincing if they are not aware of the situation in Bangladesh. But, those who know about the country's legal system might deem this absurd. /1

Except for Boris Johnson and Kim Jong Un, all Donald Trump's friends are in crisis--one (Netanyahu) is officially out of power. Two (Modi and Bolsanaro) are rapidly losing ground. 😀

@HappymonJacob
Yes. More importantly, the so-called "Indian freedom struggle" was not a struggle in the true sense. The British Voluntarily left the Indian subcontinent.
@FarisHammadi
That's an excellent point. However, the question is: who qualifies as "rulers" here? Are monarchies defacto rulers in Islam? And what is the ruling for the monarchies that gained power with the support of the British?
@AkhtarM1956
We have undoubtedly made many achievements in 52 years. However, when highly regarded members of civil society become apologists for authoritarianism, it indicates a significant flaw in the society. During the Pakistan era, we did not have such a spineless civil society.
My Mum told me she’s been researching how to best support PhD students. She asked me how writing was going and when I said “difficult” she told me: “Make sure you take a break from writing this afternoon because it’s good for your brain! You’ll find new ideas!” 🥺😭🥰

If professors have harsh comments about a paper, I feel that all should be posted before the vacation starts. A few sentences can ruin a student's vacation.😀

Comparing this with Dhaka's regular waterlogging might not be appropriate. In Dhaka, it has become an everyday affair during the rainy season. Blaming climate change is also unsuitable for Dhaka because we don't experience unusual rain.
