Out now - a long simmering project: A minimal scenario for the origin of non-equilibrium order. Led by Riccardo Ravasio @RRavasio and Kabir Husain @kabir8husain (now at UCL); + fun collab with Constantine Evans, Rob Phillips, Jack Szostak @SzostakLab

@NimwegenLab @RRavasio @kabir8husain @SzostakLab Narrowest/honest reading of this work has little to say about hypermutators because those are often due to mismatch repair enzymes, not processive enzymes where our logic is strongest. (Though meta-lesson: be careful of intuitive assumptions like "faster is less accurate").

@NimwegenLab @RRavasio @kabir8husain @SzostakLab The dsDNA virus (killer) we've been looking at has mu =1e-7 spb (uses kinetic proofreading) and a genome length L of 10^4 bases. Too low to explain by selection for accuracy but explained by speed. Would love to hear about other cases where mu << 1/L.

Argh - missed naming the most important collaborator: Marco Ribezzi @RibezziMarco , then at ESPCI, who got the whole thing started during the early pandemic.

Wow, pretty cool idea for a potentially generic signature of lifen anywhere - simple argument based on kinetics vs equilibrium.
Preprint! If you had a soil sample from Mars, what would you look for as evidence of life? Many proposals focus on specific compounds, but extraterrestrial life need not resemble ours. And no known signature comes from self-replication alone.1/2 @eltanin4
