@PictureSporting What a fantastic photo. Harold Larwood with a cigarette! What makes me feel very old & very sad is if I think back 45 years (as 1932/33 was 45 years back from that 1977 interview), England bowlers from that era - Bob Willis, Graham Dilley, Robin Jackman - have all passed away.

But Sir Clive Lloyd is - as has often been the case - spot-on when he says players improve by playing better players, so the incentive to gain promotion MUST be there. Otherwise, second division title or not, the value for those teams to play Tests would simply not be there… /4

At the same time, the ICC must make financial provision to support the second tier sides to play Tests. It’s an expensive format to stage. Also, hopefully, the context of winning a second division may also attract broadcasters’ interest… /3

I saw the improvement in Associate teams when they played multi-day cricket in Bob Woolmer’s brainchild, the Intercontinental Cup, & so I know more long form cricket, especially with a context, will benefit lower ranked teams… /2
