Atlanta’s goal as a city and a region should, at a minimum, not be the WORST CITY IN THE WORLD IN TRANSPORTATION. This involves transit. Bike lanes. Land use. Zoning. Combination of policy, funding, and individual choices. We can do this, but we have a LONG way to go.

I don’t think anyone in Cobb County realizes the level of impact the World Cup will have. KSU and Atlanta United will be training facilities. The Battery will likely be used as a fanzone area. Woe be the international travelers who come expecting a robust transit network.

Today, I volunteered to be a poll watcher in Smyrna. I am exhausted and my legs are dead, but it was one of the most fulfilling things I’ve done. I helped 5 people vote for their first time and 3 people would have walked away and not voted if I didn’t convince them to stay.

A transit line that goes nowhere and has no dedicated Right of Way is being used to block dedicated transit expansion in a busy corridor. It’s like people saying β€œno one rides the bus” when buses arrive hourly and the stops have no shelter.

So, about that expansion… Amtrak’s future strategy is of a regional β€œhub and spoke” system. Atlanta would be connected to Nashville, Savannah, Charlotte, Birmingham, Montgomery all within around 4 hours. Stops would include Macon, Marietta, Cartersville, and Chattanooga. 🀀

Atlanta will never reach it's full potential without radically increased investment in mass transit and other non car ways of getting around like a comprehensive protected bike lane network. The city has incredible bones and character and should be the envy of the Southeast.

Looking at this population density map of the US, I find it really impressive that a collective sense of belonging and national identity was established. The country is big and in a geographical sense divided. The West coast is so far from the eastern population centers.

It’s crazy to me that MARTA has delayed the bus network redesign implementation because of the adverse impacts to some riders (valid) but they are totally okay with shutting down access to its one central station for multiple years.

Transit only makes a significant impact when everyone is able to use it. When we defund it or make it so unreliable that only those who β€œneed it” use it, we are automatically creating transit’s demise.
