Didn’t need Soto, the projections that he was getting went above and beyond that. Lately most players value has been going above then the projections. Soto was not worth close to a billion dollars, if arod was playing in this era of spending he would’ve been worth more than Soto because he was a true 5 tool player. The Yankees will not get that “gene michael” build of the 90s when they drafted, traded and signed key players to win for a decade of going to the World Series. Since I don’t count 98 -00 as teams that cashman made. Since 2000 they only have one title in 4 appearances. The Red Sox in that same time period won 4 World Series titles which is the most by any team for the last 25 years. What has changed? Extra wild card teams, teams tanking collect high draft picks, player development has been getting better, the amount of money poured into free agent market. The Yankees has proven since the Steinbrenner family taken over the team that spending on every premium name does not guarantee you a title to the World Series or what the term get thrown around “buy a World Series”. They only won 8 titles under this ownership, the dodgers has two titles since the new ownership took over. Phillies/padres still have not won a big title even though they spent big on big free agent names. So it still come down to three things of making a team good for years to come is drafting and developing players, trading talent for talent, and signing players that are difference makers.
