Head of English at a rather excellent school in Essex. Views my own. FCCT. NPQML NPQLTD she/her

Every teacher I know is running on empty. Thereβs too much to do. Thereβs too much pressure (some from ourselves) to get this right because it actually matters. Too many conflicting pressures. And still teaching. This is not on. And no one seems to be listening. 1/2.

@bigbrainsoldier @sighyam One that's in a larger building shared with other things. It's a fab library actually. Spent a fab morning there working on some OU work years ago.

I canβt do either of my jobs well enough at the minute. Mum or teacher. Iβm tired of people who say itβs really easy to do (with no children at home). Iβm tired of feeling guilty for sleeping! I just want to be back at school.

Feeling beyond cross that for the second year in a row the new school year begins before we know what our year 11s and 13s are working towards. In what way is this acceptable? Why arenβt the Education Select Committee doing more? @ofqual? @educationgovuk?.

Not going to quote tweet or screen shot any of the grotesque comments Iβve seen on here, Iβm just going to say that having asthma doesnβt make me less of a person. Itβs a vastly misunderstood condition by most. Mine is well managed. Iβve run a marathon. Iβm not unworthy.

@TabitaSurge Also read that apparently young children shouldn't be allowed to wear clothes of the opposite gender (according to BBC website). This could prove problematic.

@TabitaSurge I mean I believe she doesn't have children and so may be completely unaware how breastfeeding works with fussing to increase supply and so on, but she should surely know enough about child development to know that withholding food as a punishment is a no no.

I never thought Iβd be blocked for merely saying that my son will have two part-time teachers in his reception year in September and Iβm not bothered. These things are true. I was part time for two years. Would be somewhat hypocritical of me to be grumpy about other people.

Secondary English teachers, can we stop pretending that a rigorous English curriculum means moving A Level texts down to Year 7. It doesn't. And those text lose somewhat on the way. Maturity matters when discussing texts.

In case anyone was wondering/didn't know/hadn't worked it out from January I will be Head of Department at my lovely school. Any tips on good reading/resources/people to follow for a new HoD will be warmly welcomed. Thanks all!.

@HLeeHurley I don't think he understands self-harm or anorexia and the Mail really should have thought about how they phrased that section. Highly highly inappropriate.

In case it's useful for anyone - here is a link to my revision calendar for AQA GCSE Lit and Lang this year. Works for all text options. Tasks are 5 minutes tops. Credit to loads of people I've magpied off over the years: .

I wonβt be doing that 10 year challenge thing. 10 years ago I was thin. And could run a comfortable 10km. This is not true now. Butβ¦I have two gorgeous children now and have achieved many things in the past decade. Itβs too different to compare.

Independent schools? Many are still open. Many still have boarders. I have friends who are definitely still working in their independent schools (and boarding duty is hugely time consuming and intense). Donβt be distracted by the dead cat. They are not the 1.

I wore my βWell behaved women seldom make historyβ t shirt to the 3 year olds ballet class today. Got a compliment on it from another mum. Never miss a chance to smash the patriarchy. Even in a room full of little girls dressed in pink.

@TabitaSurge It's madness. Among other nonsense given that some GCs say that clothes don't matter and you should just wear what you want, why on earth do we need to say anything about uniform changes.

Tomorrow is my first day in school as HoD. I 'think' I'm ready. Starting to get anxious about everything as it will be a bit awkward until my replacement is appointed. I should try and chill out tonight, yes?.

Twitter seems to suggest that 'Order and Disorder' in #Macbeth is what people would like me to talk about. Before I start working on it can I just check people are genuinely interested? I'm having quite bad imposter syndrome here. A like will of course suffice to let me know.

Fellow year 7 teachers. Take care. Many of the books we βthinkβ of as ours actually moved to KS2 a long time ago. Personally I would avoid any Morpurgo for this reason (although still have some on suggested reasons). Books like Holes and Wonder are also regularly done. 1/4.

This year I teach 8 different classes in 11 different rooms. Not a single one of those classes has the same room twice. I don't have anything approaching a 'base' for my teaching and it is utterly exhausting.

@TabitaSurge It's ridiculous. I commented on MN on it when they called Georgia Tennant a handmaiden as well. Pointing out that no, she just disagrees with them. It's not about male approval. I've been replied to and quoted several times but I don't need to know how much they hate me.

TW: not myself sorry, we lost a student on Tuesday and he was a good friend of several of my form. The past two days have been very tough. The students have been impressive in the care they have shown to each other and us. Please talk to people and take the time to listen.

The much less stressful second child primary admission process has been concluded. Both children off to the same place from September. No more nursery fees from the end of July. The times they are a changing.

The people who arrange these community clapping/singing/bell ringing things clearly donβt have small children! 8pm on Christmas Eve? Nope and thrice nope. Bed time starts at 6pm here. And no, they donβt get up later if I put them to bed later. Thatβs not how preschoolers work!.

@TabitaSurge It also makes a mockery of so much textual teaching in English. How are we meant to explore masculinity in a text (or indeed femininity) without discussing the social construct of gender. 'Come ye spirits that tend on mortal flesh, unsex me here.' 'First I must feel it like a man.

Just throwing this out there but if you teach year 10/11 English Literature you could do a lot worse than getting a copy of the 2021 edition of The Art of Writing English Literature Essays by @neilbowen3 and @Xris32.

Out of interest why do we insist on joined writing for handwriting? At KS3 and beyond the only issue is is it legible. I have seen so many more students with illegible handwriting than I used to and it isnβt from a lack of effort on the part of primary teachers. Far from it.

Lose that. They need help with finding their way and negotiating organisation and making new friends. They donβt need us to have low expectations of their work. The KS2 curriculum is complex and we do them a disservice by not building on it. End rant. 4/4.

Do you know what I think is damaging to trainees and NQTs? That if only they meet every βunmet needβ in their class than behaviour will be perfect. This is a recipe for working yourself into the ground and feeling like a crap teacher when some of the students wonβt listen to you.

@estelleleecopy @skyenotruby I had a male midwife. Absolutely delightful and made me the best piece of toast ever. It was the lack of care from the night shift bank female midwife that led to my emergency c section. Which involved a variety of male medical practitioners.

@johncosgrove405 I maintain that for clerical errors like this a provider should be given 24 hours to correct the error. We talk a lot at the minute about the pressure on heads. I would argue the pressure on admin staff in the current inspection form is way above their pay grade.

Been thinking a lot about the hideousness/pointlessness that is the current English Language GCSE. Getting tired of just moaning about it on here though. Thinking about what else can be done. As @greeborunner says it is not fit for purpose. Iβm not sure it knows what itβs for!.
