I seem to be talking a lot about the importance of giving pupils the opportunity to think about, discover and develop their unique artist identities in schools. And how important it is that as teachers, we know, nurture and celebrate them. The earlier we instil in our pupils the knowledge and understanding that art as a subject is widely varied and subjective the better. We all like different things & have different strengths, skill sets and styles. All art should be valued and all preferences respected and accepted. Children need to feel that their artistic responses and views are valid and meaningful, even if they differ from everyone else’s. We must develop classroom cultures of appreciation and celebration of these individual artist identities. More thoughts on how to do this to follow, what do you think?
