A nice book about Athos in English is this one by Sydney Loch. He lived in The Ouranoupolis tower and walks in the first chapter to the border, Chromitsa and ends his walk in Chilandariou.
Today we walked from Karakallou via Filotheou ( with grass courtyard) to Mylopotamos then to Iviron, with the monastery of Stavronikita as final destination. A total of 12 km.
A doubled-sided icon from Dionysiou (ca. 1375)on the damaged side we see 4 saints from Trebizond and the other side, the founder of the monastery emperor Alexios III Comnenos and St. John the Baptist
Megisti Lavra, nr 1 in the ranking of monasteries seen from and to the hill. In the middle of the courtyard, next to the church, the very big, old cypress
Here I am, high up Dionysiou, trying to to find the path that goes over the mountain ridge in the direction of Sk. Lakkou together with Bart Janssen who took the photo. We did not find it.
On this location near Iviron, it is said that, Maria (Panagia) came to land on Athos, calling it The Garden of the Mother of God afterwards. Kaliagra and Stavronikita in the distance.
The monks of Dionysiou asked us to bring this box with, I assume, letters to the harbour below and place it on the peer so that the ferry can take it to the normal world.
