It’s called the Spring Mountains for a reason… the secret spring I often speak of is running like I’ve never seen. This is water that finds its way to bedrock and is pushed back to the top of the mountains only to run down it again. Replenishment has occurred.

This is Fernando… he and his mate, Fernanda, use our deck railing to scout for mice and keep a look out for predators. After 6 years they will hang out with me while I stargaze. This reminds me that we live in their neighborhood, not the other way around.

Many parts of the mountain have been completely changed. The secret spring I often post has cut entirely new paths, brought down trees, and is a totally different experience. I’m sure every trail we have ever taken is now brand new. Is the north loop still there? Nobody knows yet

This is Chippy, we’ve been friends for 3 years. It’s always sad to see her go in the winter, but joyous to see her and her new babies each spring. If we miss her, I call her by name and I can see her far off in the forest jumping from rock to rock as she makes her way to meet us.

That clearance used to be six feet underneath it. Other reports are that where it’s not covered in rock, it’s covered in mud. It may take a month or two before we see it again… 💔

The sky is clear as a bell tonight… it’s 24°f at midnight after having warmed up from 16° at 10pm. Forecasts for snow totals from Sunday through Tuesday have now reached insanity levels. The snow line supposedly starts at 6000 feet. What a chilly calm before the snow storm.

Today in Centennial it is raining pretty good. Coming down Durango we noticed an older lady, walking slowly across the street trying to stay dry. This orange car pulled over and waived to her… when she got to the window, the driver gave the lady an Umbrella.

This morning I stepped onto the deck and, after 6 long months of hibernation (torpor), Ms Chippy emerged! She nestled on my leather shoe for a moment as we greeted and spoke for a bit, then I gave her a peanut. We were both happy to see one another again.
