Vkei was then at its peak in the 90’s where bands X Japan, Buck Tick, Luna Sea, Glay, and Malice Mizer became the face of visual kei. Buck Tick’s Atushi Sakurai particularly becoming a large celebrity even outside of the vkei community. His unique voice and visuals alluring many.

It’s also very worth mentioning the formation of exist trace! Up until their entrance in the scene, vkei was only really male bands. exist trace changed this as being one of the first if not the first all female vkei band. after their formation, more and more female bands debuted

These 4 bands formed the “four heavenly kings”. this is when the vkei scene became the actual vkei scene we see today ^^. Cosplay of visuals became popular especially of Malice Mizer. Gifts for bandmen were also a noticeable feature and bands grew a predominantly female audience

Luna Sea + Glay were some of the largest vkei bands in Japan at the time while today I’ve noticed western fans often talk about bands like Shazna + L’arc En Ciel more! Luna Sea in particular being a powerhouse of the 90’s, with backing from Yoshiki + Hide.

The first band to really be called visual shock kei was X Japan, after their album Blue Blood in 1989. Many famous vkei bands, however, had emerged before this label was created such as Buck Tick and Luna Sea. X Japan’s Yoshiki was particularly at the fore front of the band.

Mejibray and Dadaroma also became notoriously popular by this style. They were more criticized by westerners than in Japan. Menhara continues even today with bands like kaneto-juusei + Ririka which formed in the late 2010’s and early 2020’s :)

Yoshiki pioneered so much of jrock and contributed to the success of so many classic vkei bands like Luna Sea. His visuals set the standard. Hide was also one of the major players of X Japan and one of the biggest inspirations for japanese punk throughout his whole career.

Unfortunately because vkei is primarily upheld by female audiences, Exist Trace and many other female bands are not as popular. However, they are there!! Exist trace has been in the market and haven’t turned themselves down for publicity. They are extremely consistent + talented

The mid to late 00’s gave way to bands like Golden Bomber, Alice Nine, Schwartz Stein, Acid Black Cherry, + Kiryu. Unfortunately the later 2000’s vkei didn’t seem to hit foreign markets as much and these bands aren’t as popular with most westerns :( they were huge in japan tho!

the 2010’s vkei scene changed with the rise of internet + sns. Following similar trends of western bands, the music of vkei began to shift more towards a theme of menhara. R Shitei was kind of the pioneer for this even though “menhara” existed before the 2010’s coined term.

Malice Mizer was the most mainstream of the 4 bands with La’cryma Christi a close second in Japan. Shazna was more popular in western vkei spheres. Malice Mizer gained attention primarily only because of Gackt in the mid to late 90’s. They were able to move beyond vkei with him.

MM is much more accredited and popular in the west than they are in Japan surprisingly. Japan mainly focuses on Gackt and his solo career, with him becoming one of the only vkei artists alongside Toshiya, Atsushi, and Hide, to make it out of the vkei scene into public media.

The reason you can “hear” the vkei in a song is because they tend to incorporate instruments + trends typical of their influenced visuals (baroque -classic west european fashion, electropop -cyber fashion, etc) jp music is also very notable for its distinct chord progressions 1/3
When you blindly hear a vk song without seeing the visuals first, you can HEARRRR the vk in it. There's a distinct sound in the songs... even in all the different bands. Please stop saying it isn't a genre 😭 it's music and fashion combined into one 😭

It’s the reason even general jp rock, pop, metal, etc. is so different than english rock which is probably what a lot of western vkei fans see as the starting point to compare vkei bands to general music. vkei is NOT a genre of music. vkei isn’t limited to one genre of music. 2/3

vkei ranges from pop to metal to edm to goth to whatever. vkei is a subcultural movement where the music is influenced by the fashion of the performer(s) NOT because it’s a genre. you can not say that jiluka and kuroneko make the same genre of music despite both being vkei 😭 3/3

x japan formed so much of jrock itself today, their influence is so strong in japanese music. there are many older people who still listen to their music daily in japan, even younger. I hope more western fans will take interest in them more soon! 🩵
Vkei would not exist without Hide. I also feel like people in the English speaking community currently do not appreciate him/X Japan enough. So many have no idea who he is and his impact on the scene… The amount of bands and trends he specifically is credited to is insane.
