🇿🇦 Mandla Mandela (grandson of Nelson Mandela): “Let us not forget the last colony of Africa: Western Sahara. Let us fight to free Western Sahara from oppression. Let us also remember Mothiba said our freedom is incomplete without the freedom of Palestine .. Free, Free Palestine”
The fact that absolute destruction is being unleashed in Gaza but you can't feel it 70 kilometres away should tell you all you need to know about apartheid
"Hey guys, the police are coming to arrest me. They're standing at the bottom of my building, and they're coming. I haven't done anything except film. Goodbye."
This is the final video. Mohamed Saied posted this 55 minutes ago. #السويس
Today we stand with the survivors and families of the
#March15
attacks.
Three years ago, 51 of our most beautiful souls were ripped away cruelly. Those wounds are still fresh. The pain is still real.
This is a part of New Zealand’s story. We must never let it be forgotten.
Imagine being so oblivious to the suffering and chaos this virus has caused around the world - that you feel like being in one of the few safe countries is oppressive
BREAKING: Protests have broken out in Tahrir Square and a number of other places around Egypt, calling for the removal of President Sisi. #ميدان_التحرير
No matter what you thought of her politics, the sustained personal attacks and hatred levelled at Jacinda was unlike anything I’d seen- from critiques of her motherhood to hysteria and conspiracy theories to threats of violence.
It’s not safe to be a woman in public light

, a man called Mohamed Saied living in Suez was filming clashes of police and protesters from his balcony, now says police are coming to detain him. Final video shows him in a stunned state saying goodbye, while a woman offscreen begs him to stop filming. #السويس
Are there Hamas tunnels under hospitals? Did Israel give up Gaza in 2005? Did the Palestinians reject their own state?
We debunk six myths from Hillary Clinton's viral interview about Gaza
Israel’s govt just got exactly what it wanted out of Iran:
- a non-threatening military response
- a chance to rally Western sympathies
- a lifeline for US politicians punished by domestic anger at Gaza
- a renewed sense of fear inside Israel that helps Netanyahu play the hero
It is absolutely chilling that just 5 years after the Christchurch Mosque Attacks, we can still be aruging about gun safety in New Zealand.
Assault rifles should've never been allowed, and now that they're banned, there should never be an excuse to bring them back.
NZ's new Race Relations Commissioner Melissa Derby:
• A founder of Free Speech Coalition
• Took Auckland Council to court for not hosting far-right anti-Muslim speakers
• Called anti-racism protesters "thugs"
• Doesn't believe in systemic racism
The footage we received from Idlib last night was devastating. At least 20 people were killed by a government airstrike on a vegetable market in Ariha.
157 bombs were dropped. This is three days after a ceasefire brokered by Russia/Turkey.
I really hope the Christchurch sentencing is front-and-centre on our minds and in the media this week.
It's the very least we owe to the brave victims and families facing this head on.
You do not get to tell this story.
You do not get to turn this into a White Saviour narrative.
This is not yours.
This pain is still fresh and real.
This is upsetting, obscene and grotesque. I am tired.
It is utterly exhausting to have spent 6 years talking about the experience of Muslims in NZ and know nothing has changed.
Every year, people are shocked that islamophobia exists on a social and systemic level.
Every year, people forget.
Every year, people are hurt and killed.
Over the last three days, the Christchurch High Court heard heartbreaking, angry and profoundly beautiful statements of loss from the survivors and family members of the mosque victims.
They are all heroes, deserving of the highest praise and utmost support and love.
Four years ago, 51 beautiful souls were taken from us in a cruel act of hate.
The survivors and families of March 15 have since treaded a long and lonely path through grief.
I spoke to
@AyaUmari
about her brother Hussein’s wonderful and heroic life
Hamimah Tuyan was the last of the Christchurch victims to speak in court this week - on behalf of her husband Zekeriya, who died after fighting for his life in hospital for 48 days.
This is what she read. It is earthshatteringly beautiful.
Several protests have broken out in provincial areas around Egypt. Meanwhile nothing yet in Alexandria and Cairo likely due to heavy police presence and multiple road closures/checkpoints in place.

Anti-blackness in the huge problem in the Arab world - blackface on TV, racism in the streets, and an long and painful history of slavery we're not taught about.
It's time we addressed it.

This war-porn bs is ruining journalism. No one cares about your "brave" journey crossing illegally into another country to cover what better reporters have already covered. This story isn't about you.
إنا لله وإنا إليه راجعون
Oh Allah, we ask you to bring ease to the souls of the 51 we lost one year ago today, shower them with your blessings, grant strength and serenity to their loved ones.
May we never forget them, and may we grow from this better, kinder and more open.
Roads around Tahrir Square, and even roads leading up to it, appear to all be closed off. These are usually the routes taken by protesters trying to reach the square.

May Allah bless the victims lost from our beautiful Muslim community to this unspeakable terror, the survivors and their loved ones, and grant them the strength, guidance and grace to navigate the journey of healing that now begins.
إِنَّا لِلّهِ وَإِنَّـا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعونَ
I poured all my feelings into this piece about why this film is yet another Hollywood exploitation of Muslim pain, and why many of us never really felt comfortable with

Hi Rebecca Kitteridge, you may want to check out my podcast all about how NZSIS was in fact spying on the Muslim community, questioning 17-year-olds without their parents knowledge and trying to recruit informants in mosques.
It might clarify things.
If anyone thought the comments sections under New Zealand media stories and interviews changed in anyway a week after the Christchurch attack...I have bad news for you
BREAKING: Brenton Tarrant, the terrorist responsible for the Christchurch mosque attacks on March 15, has been sentenced to life in prison without parole.
He pled guilty to 51 counts of murder, 40 counts of attempted murder, and one count of carrying out an act of terrorism.
I spoke to

@AfraviAmin

about Australia's offshore detention policies, and the toll on those still trapped in its sadistic system.
Thank you for your generosity in lending your voices and stories to this piece!
Novak Djokovic's detention in Australia recast a light on the country's 'sadistic' refugee laws, which left thousands of asylum seekers trapped for years in offshore camps facing violence, trauma and death.

- At least 100 detained

Mohamed Saied livestreams moments before what he said was police approaching his apartment in order to arrest him for filming clashes in Suez. #السويس_ام_الثوره
Words people use when they really mean “white”:
• Civilised
• European
• Peaceful
• Democratic
• Heroic
• Like us
• Resisting
• Defending their homes
Solidarity with the people of 🇺🇦 Ukraine, but many of us are watching the coverage with great interest 📝
Also, throughout the entire night, this was the only time that NZ's leading conspiracy theory party was brought up, and thankfully it was given all the respect it deserved, and precisely none more.
I’m really blessed to say my new book ‘How to be a Bad Muslim’ launches today in New Zealand and Australia with

Israel broadcasts two very different messages about what’s happening in

As a Muslim in New Zealand I’ve long yearned for a TV show that reflected me and my community.
Now me,

are making one inshallah 🎬
This has really been a mask off moment for Musk.
He rewired Twitter to lift his voice above everyone else while promoting racially-fueled conspiracy theories
He platformed the most unhinged far-right accounts while giving them financial rewards for stoking hatred & trolling
Protester in Lebanon: "They keep raising taxes on everything, on cigarettes, on WhatsApp. Tomorrow they will stick meters in our asses and raise taxes on our shit."
Borders open. Food served. Ukrainians fleeing Russia's military are welcomed by Europe as heroes.
So why were Syrians treated as ‘terrorists’?

These desperate attempts for online engagement are undermining what used to be reputable news brands. As an editor, you know exactly the kinds of ugly responses you're eliciting by putting up questions like this. We need to have better standards.
My series for

It looks at communal grief, anger, belonging and confusion in the aftermath of the Christchurch terror attacks.

Now that the trial is finally over, New Zealand has to get back to the conversations we've all been avoiding.
My thoughts on guilt and collective grief.
At the outset of the chch terror attacks all my family &I had one common intuition, is that my bro would have tried to confront the terrorist.
I requested formal counts of his last movements to cement this heroic act
Now two years and a bit on, I finally have it & I'm so so
'As Israeli forces continue to mercilessly rain air strikes on Gaza, journalists are being sent on one futile 'fact-finding mission' after another.'
My column about a week-long hunt for truth that led us nowhere.
I have no doubt there are people out there who are relieved they can finally joke about Muslims being killed.
What's also true is outrage is profitable, and weaponising anger for promotion will get you attention - then you contort yourself into a victim and claim free speech
It's important to reiterate how significant these protests are. Freedom of expression, assembly and media have been cracked down on heavily by the military since 2013. Protests have been outlawed. Citizens routinely arrested for social media posts. Today a fear has been broken.
I've spent the morning watching old footage from Tahrir Square and it's made me so sad. I still remember the joy, the promise, the hope of this moment. I still believe in it. It will return. It's a light that can never go out.
Pharrell Williams says he gets annoyed by celebrities speaking on politics:
“I don’t do politics. In fact, I get annoyed sometimes when I see celebrities trying to tell you [who to vote for]… I’m one of them people [who says], ‘What the heck? Shut up. Nobody asked you.’”
Warning ⚠️ A triggered Karen and Terry that we met today. Never ever in my 23 years in New Zealand did I think I'd upload one of those Karen videos . ~A THREAD ~
