Dear MOCA Friends and Neighbors, Breaking news! MOCA is incredibly relieved to hear and share that the MOCA team just received word that the remaining 80% of the MOCA Collections, along with our neighbor tenants’ belongings, will be retrieved next week from 70 Mulberry.

As of now, we have recovered 1/3 of MOCA's total collection. Wet items getting sent to an offsite facility for treatment.

While we are grateful to have retrieved 1/3 of our collection, we are aware this represents a fraction of the entire 85,000-item archive. Our thoughts are very much focused on the two-thirds of the collection that is still sitting at 70 Mulberry Street whose condition is unknown.

This was recovered from our P.S. 23 collection. It's a drawer containing the records of students who once attended P.S. 23 back when 70 Mulberry St. was a public school starting in 1891. P.S. 23 has such a rich history. Look out for more posts from us about this historic school.

This damaged scroll was recovered from our archives. It says Museum of Chinese in the Americas - MOCA’s name before 2009. During transfer to our recovery area, it was accidentally placed upside down. Seeing it that way, it feels like the fire has turned MOCA’s world upside down.

In 1897, Port Arthur Restaurant was opened by Chu Gam Fai. It was named after a port city in Northern China, now called the Lüshunkou District. It was the first restaurant to receive a liquor license in Chinatown and remained in operation for over 80 years at the same location.

Yung Wing (1828-1912) attended Yale University 1850. Wing created history by being the first Chinese student to graduate from a North American university. His 12,000 book donation led to the creation of Yale's world-renowned East Asian Library.

In order to enforce Chinese exclusion, Angel Island opened in 1910 to interrogate Chinese immigrants. Coaching books such as this one were created to help paper sons memorize details relevant to their “family” to answer questions during the intense interrogations. #mocaspike150
