No one is seated and not many dry eyes at Xavier Center as Scranton Prep senior Grace Stampien, who is fighting leukemia, is introduced for Senior Night.
I have truly enjoyed my 29-plus years here at The Scranton Times-Tribune. That run comes to an end Friday night.

Prep shooting shorts honoring senior Grace Stampien, left, who is battling leukemia. Her teammmates' idea. Every player wears "3" with Stampien across the back.
After an unavoidable trip to Walmart, I see it's okay for eight people to jam into a narrow aisle looking for cleaning material, but not okay for four people to get "together" on a golf course.
Villanova coach Denise Dilllon was in attendance for Wednesday's Lynett Memorial Tournament girls final at Lackawanna College. 'Nova is one of eight schools that made the final cut of Dunmore junior and 6-foot-4 center Ciera Toomey.
Strikeout No. 269 of the season for Holy Cross pitcher Jenna Bradley, breaking the Lackawanna League record set in 2005 by Lakeland's Arielle Pruzinsky.
Got to love the Valley View student section. They have a whiteboard and changing messages on it to single out opposing players via mathematical equations.
In his first major, Dupont native and Pittston Area grad Brandon Matthews has made the cut at the U.S. Open. Matthews carded a round of 69, 1-under par, and is even for the championship, currently tied for 24th.
Congratulations to Dupont native Brandon Matthews on his victory in Bogota, Colombia, on the Korn Ferry Tour. How about a birdie-birdie-eagle finish to win by a shot! Is that any good?
Scranton Prep senior Rachael Rose has formally committed to South Carolina Upstate, where she will play for former Abington Heights star and 1st year head coach Becky Burke.
Congratulations to Scranton Prep's Rachael Rose (S. Carolina Upstate) and Dunmore's Moriah Murray (St. Joe's) on their latest D-I basketball scholarship offers.
Toomey matches her career high with 28 points and Dunmore is headed to the state Class 3A semifinals Monday with a win over District 1 champ Imhotep Charter, 57-42
Talked to Brandon Matthews tonight. Disappointed, yes, but somehow made me laugh. What I respect most is he always answers the phone, good times or bad. More rare than steak tartar. Can't tell you how many times I've seen a ballplayer head to the trainer's room after a bad game.
... for D-2 softball playoffs. We go to Mohegan Sun for all basketball, PNC Field for all baseball. Why not follow suit and go to best site we have for softball? ...
Lake-Lehman's Bobby Lugiano finished with 1 over 72 and grabs 6th place medal at PIAA golf championships in Class 2A. Dallas' Logan Paczewski shoots 1 under 70 and is 8th in Class 3A.
Here's something you don't see every day. Mennonite's John Ritchey leads a prayer for both teams at center court at the conclusion of a physical war between the clubs.
North Pocono sophomore Billy Pabst Jr. shoots a bogey-free, 5-under 67 to lead Class AAA qualifying at Elmhurst C.C., for District 2 individual tourney Sept. 30.
Sending out condolences to Holy Cross girls basketball coach Barry Fitzgerald and his family. Barry's dad passed on Saturday. Glad he was able to help Barry celebrate his 600th win last month.
Got word earlier today about the passing of former Riverside golf coach Jack Helcoski. He taught his players a lot more than golf over 40 years. My condolences to his wife, their two kids, and his legion of friends.
Congratuations also to Dunmore's Ciera Toomey who shot 79 to finish 4th and medal in the girls Class 2A state golf championship. Elk Lake golfer Chloe Sipe shot 81 to finish 6th.
Spoke with Toomey after the game. She said it's not an ACL, per the trainer. And that she's had a similar situation in May where the kneecap popped out of place.
Pretty cool Monday night for girls basketball:
#2
Dunmore at
#3
Riverside, both 19-1; Nya Johnson (11) and Tatum Repshis (12) both try to cap senior season with 1,000th point at home vs SCR: and Old Forge junior Olivia Ciullo needs 3 at Lakeland for 1,000.
A few hours and we are off to arguably the best day of softball District 2 has ever seen. Four teams in quarterfinals, all in same spot? Awesome. See you at Pates Park. I'll be guy with hot dog overload.
WOW!!! Single by Abbey McCormick, runner held at third, throw gets away and then she's sent. Summa to Butka and the tag for the final out and West Scranton is on to the state semis to play Lampeter-Strasburg on Monday.
this sums up everything I am talking about.
@PIAASports
