Ariana Grande reveals she didn’t understand the significance of chart performance early in her career: ‘“The Way” was in the top 10 [of the Hot 100] and I sh*t you not, I didn’t know what that meant. [My team was] going, ‘Holy sh*t, it’s #1 on iTunes!’ and I was like, ‘What are you talking about, what does that even mean?’ They’re like, ‘It’s going to be top 10 on the Billboard [Hot 100].’ I was like, ‘OK, is that good, what does that mean? Am I supposed to do something about it, do I care about it?’ I was just a kid who wanted to make art. I had to learn the other side of it. I didn’t know the business side of it at all, when I came into it. I try to [stay away from the business].”
