When I think of players who refuse to quit, Baylee Andree is among the best. Last night her varsity team evened the season score with the Zeeland East Chix and Baylee was cooking all over the court including a flurry of 3’s that were too much for the Chix to handle. Baylee is a lengthy combo guard with speed and stamina for days. Oh, and she can shoot…and rebound….and pass…and pester anyone who comes near her with her lightening fast reflexes. I’ve had limited interaction with Baylee thus far but my excitement in being able to coach her this spring is through the roof. She is a fighter who gets loads of minutes as a sophomore starting for a very talented Spring Lake Varsity squad. When the shots aren’t falling, (which they do, she’s shooting 37% from behind the arch), Baylee almost works harder on defense to ensure she is contributing to her team. She is averaging 2 steals per game over the 14 games I have been able to track and there is rarely a loose ball she isn’t on the ground fighting to try and recover. I’ve had the pleasure of watching Baylee play for years and am so grateful that she has chosen to play with Team House this spring. Baylee, you’re killing it this year! I love this show. I re-watch the entire series at the beginning of every year to help keep me grounded going into my spring season. We are about to enter the hardest stretch in High School Basketball. The last third. Tournament hype isn’t here yet, injuries are popping up, and motivation may be waning. I’ve witnessed the full spectrum so far this season following multiple teams. Meltdowns, missed calls, poor coaching, poor attitudes, team dissidence, entitlement, parent pressure…you name it. But I’ve also seen grace, love, comebacks, glow ups, camaraderie, faith, joy, victory, pride, and love for the game. It’s all these things that make the game of basketball, and sports in general, great. I’ve been guilty of everything on the first list. Thankfully, through second chances, I’ve also experienced everything on the second. Sports are a beautiful thing. Let’s not let our petty pride take that away from others. Forgive. Have faith. Trust your team. Buy into your coach’s system. Be selfless. It’s not about you. It’s about us. This season is only one chapter in your story. Might as well make it a good one.
