GRANT FISHER'S 5K AMERICAN RECORD IN SPLITS THAT HIGH SCHOOL XC RUNNERS CAN RELATE TO:
1600-4:07.1
3200-8:13.3 (4:06.2)
4800-12:17.6 (4:04.3)
Finish 29.4
Kids, go down to your local track and give that a shot. That's how you run 12:46.96!
@Phresh_Fish
PSA: Diving does NOT get you there faster.
This is a stupider trend than vaping.
If I see anyone do this when I'm announcing the D1 finals next week I will ridicule you over the PA while badly mispronouncing your name.
Here it is. Hobbs Kessler: Making of a Miler
(No paywall. Please share and say nice things about Track & Field News - committed to real track writing & long form journalism).
Hobbs Kessler destroys the Michigan state record with an 8:39.04 for 2 Miles - 55.00 FAT last lap. State record for 3200 en route 8:36.3.
No. 4 all-time in US history!
WHAT A COMEBACK FROM THE TRIALS!
@LeahKayO
places 5th in the Stockholm Diamond League steeplechase with a new PR 9:16.96, her first PR in 5+ years! Fastest ever by a Michigander!!
The loneliest spot...
@Phresh_Fish
4th in a traffic jam finish - 27:28.14 - the highest World's placing ever by a Michigander in the 10K. Still to come-- the 5000.
Hobbs Kessler wins the deepest 3200 in Michigan history. All 23 runners broke 9:30.. Five broke 9 minutes.
4:33.9/4:20.5
Final 200 - 25.6
Final 400 - 56.8
Final 800 - 2:04.6
STATE RECORD!!!
3:40.46 for Hobbs Kessler
@verynice_tc
, taking down
@Phresh_Fish
3:42.89!! Placing 6th in a world class field. Last lap of 56.06 was THE FASTEST of the field (Brazier was next at 56.14).
Track is funny. One day you're just a little kid in Michigan having fun in age group track meets. And before you know it, you're a World Record holder.
Congratulations,
@DonavanBrazier
!!!
With 1 day left at Nike Outdoor--I must say my head is spinning. Michigan kids have won 9 national titles--more than twice as many as any other state! Five yesterday, and then when you consider the state records and the 2 big wins at Brooks PR...
serious Michigan dominance!
This is big. The woman who has won the most Olympic track medals in history, Allyson Felix, will be racing at UM this weekend. 5 other Olympians, Mary Cain, and more!
RIP Bob Parks - a man passionate about the sport who has made a mark for over 70 years... a legendary coach who will be dearly missed... a life well-lived.
PSA: Adding 0.24 to a time does not magically make it automatic timing (or FAT). It doesn't even make it equivalent to an FAT time, despite what so many people say. It's just a poor estimate. With FAT so common now, a converted hand-time should NEVER be called a record. 1/6
True story: I've seen meets all over the world, and more than my share of World Records. My favorite meet? The D1 LP Finals--which I was supposed to announce today. I would never trade it for a day at the Olympics. All those athletes who dreamed about today: I'm thinking of you.
OMG!!! STATE RECORD!!!
After running a stunning 46.48 in the heats,
@heard_shamar
drew lane 4 for the 400 final. What he did shocked the track world: 46.02. And he's just a sophomore, still only 16.
The Cadillac News has confirmed that Paul McMullen has died at age 49 in a ski accident. The graduate of Cadillac HS & EMU won the '96 Trials 1500 and holds the fastest 1500/mile by a Michigan native. A dear friend to many, he will be missed. Our thoughts are with his family.
"It's kind of the running joke on the team that I haven't improved since high school"
@Phresh_Fish
on his HS mile PR 3:59.38.
In his US Record 3000 today, he passed 1600 in 3:58.6 (3:59.7+ for the mile), just missing his PR.
Sigh. Obviously needs to work harder.
BREAKING NEWS: A (full) mile time trial in Ann Arbor. Reportedly Willis & Ferlic went "3:59/4:00"... then high school junior Hobbs Kessler 4:08.4! His splits: 60.1, 61.4, 61.2, 65.0 (all 440y segments). Hobbs came to the track just expecting to go three laps--but plans changed.
MORGAN BEADLESCOMB!!!
@morg_bead
- the pride of
@AHSMuskrats
&
@MSU_TFXC
- now the fastest miler in Michigan history with his 3:52.03 in Chicago! Old Best 3:54.94 Paul McMullen (3:55.84 indoors by Paul)
NEVER have XC runners--at least in Michigan--been so heavily formcharted & forecast, predicted & prognosticated, researched & ranked...
REMEMBER: none of that's worth anything once the gun goes off this weekend. Challenge yourselves to prove them wrong. Race your hearts out!
Yes, it's true.
@AlexComerford17
is the first 9:00.00 3200 runner in Michigan history.
9:00.00
On the nose.
He's No. 18 in state history now. He should be proud of a hard-fought race. But maybe we should do a gofundme to see if we can bribe another 0.01 out of the timer.
THE FASTEST EVER!
@udodii
runs the fastest-ever 100/200 by a Michigander at the NCAA West Regional, winning his quarterfinals in 10.03 (0.6 wind) and 20.08 (0.1)! 9.X & 19.X coming up soon.
WORTH NOTING: Remember Jaron Flournoy (
@LSUFlow
)? Won MI D1 sprint double for Westland Glenn in '15, led off NCAA-winning 4x1 for LSU the next year, ran in the Oly Trials 200 last year.
Hasn't run a 400 in 5 yrs, but yesterday cut nearly 2 secs off his PR with a 45.48.
Whoa.
Whoa!! Woman who never broke 20 in high school cross country qualifies for Olympic Trials Marathon! Congrats to Pinckney alum Jennifer Pope on your 2:36:24 in Houston!
RIP: legendary Saline coach Mike Smith, 72. He lived & loved his life to the fullest. Officiated meets til the last few weeks; was just at the Olympic Trials. A great mentor and friend to countless others.
Fun race:
@Phresh_Fish
just ran the No. 2 3000m ever by a Michigan HS alum, his 7:37.21 PR only behind the 7:35.29 that
@djritzenhein
while in a 2M race.
Fun fact: while Fisher's mile PR is still officially the 3:59.38 he ran in high school, his final 1600 took 3:58.36 today.
TOP PERFORMANCE OF THE DECADE
1. Grant Fisher (Grand Blanc) 3:59.38 mile
June 5, 2015 – St Louis Festival of Miles
Fisher cemented his place as a legend and became No. =3 in U.S. history when he broke the historic 4-minute barrier, a week after his 4:01.67 at the state finals.
Fun Facts:
@GraceStark18
-That 13.16 STATE RECORD in the 100H crushed the old mark by a massive 0.24.
-Now the No. 11 high schooler in US history. And No. 2 in the USA this year.
-No. 77 in the world right now. All ages--including pros.

STATE RECORD ALERT!!
Last night at Farmington, Hunter Jones of Benzie Central broke the 10th grade state record in the 3200 with his 8:59.55, taking down the 9:01.79 by Dathan Ritzenhein 22 years ago.
OLYMPIAN!!!!!!
AAANNNNAAAAVVVVVIIIIAAAA!!
21.95 for
@Annaavviiaa
for 3rd in the 200. She's going to Tokyo. Her time is the fastest ever by a Michigander, beating
@kyruhjeff
's 22.02.
STATE RECORD ALERT
Today I announced 62 straight races at
@mitstrack
without a break (bathroom or otherwise). A record? Dunno. Never kept track before.
All I wanna do is sleep now.
Some appreciation for
@morg_bead
The
@MSU_TFXC
grad's '23 so far--
Mile (
#13
US)--3:55.58 (No. 2 indoor race ever by a Michigander, after his 3:52.03)
3000 (
#9
US)-7:42.90 (No. 3 MI ever)
5000 (
#8
US)-13:15.82 (No. 2 MI ever)
Can't wait for outdoors!
@verynice_tc
With his 13:29.96 for 3rd at the NCAA Championships,
@morg_bead
becomes the fastest ever Michigan HS graduate over 5000m indoors!
(old best 13:35.44 Greg Meyer 1983)
Heck of a mile at Brooks!
@nickpfoster33
. 2nd in 4:05.50 --
#3
miler in MI history with
#5
performance ever.
@cole_johns0n
6th in 4:08.12 --
#5
miler ever,
#8
performance.
Well done, guys.
THIS IS BIG. No national record because 300 track at Saginaw, but 13 (!) seconds under the DMR all-time US high school best for Purple/Pioneer! 11:21.95 (Sarah Forysth 3:29.1 Emily Cooper 61.7 Cookie Baugh 2:12.0 Rachel Forsyth 4:38.7)
ABSOLUTELY STUNNING
THE JETS HAVE BEEN TURNED ON!
@udodii
runs the fastest 100 ever by a Michigander, 10.07 (wind legal 0.6) to win the Stanford Invitational. That's No. 6 on the World list so far this season, No. 2 in the NCAA!! (and yes, he's a true freshman)
What's next week? A 46 in the 400? A 27:30 in the 10K? At this point, I'm starting to believe that
@morg_bead
has the range to do anything he wants to!
Men's 800m | Morgan Beadlescomb grabs his second win of the weekend, using a 1:47.85 PR to place first at Indiana.
John Petruno takes fifth at a PR of 1:49.52.
#GoGreen
NEWS FLASH:
Saginaw's
@tony_martin21
just jumped a STATE RECORD 26-6 in the long jump in the dual against Saginaw Arthur Hill. Wind a legal 1.6mps. His 3-jump series: 26-6 (1.6), 23-5 (1.6), 23-11 (2.0). Also reportedly a 10.3-hand in the 100.
At the New Balance Invitational in Farmington, Hobbs Kessler ran a PR 1:49.67 in the 800, becoming the No. 5 performer in Michigan history with the No. 10 performance.
@verynice_tc
@arbor_men
US men's sprinters can no longer compete at the international level doing things the way they always have. USATF needs to choose the 4-5 fastest from the Trials WHO ARE WILLING TO COMMIT TO WEEKS OF INTENSE STICK PRACTICE. Even a second-string crew could do better w/ PRACTICE.
SUNDAY NIGHT XC STATS!
(or procrastinating real work)
What year were the conditions worst at the Michigan state finals at MIS?
[% of finishers who set PRs]
2010 - 27.9%
2011 - 13.7%
2012 - 23.6%
2013 - 5.6%
2014 - 11.0%
2015 - 14.3%
2016 - 3.5%
2017 - 9.3%
2018 - 5.2%
The announcers seemed shocked but we weren't.
@GraceStark18
wins the first heat at the Youth Olympics in 13.31. That breaks the STATE RECORD in the 30" hurdles (old 13.46 Bridgette Owens [Southfield] 2009).
(The USA high school height is 33", but the IAAF runs 30" for U18.)
STATE RECORD: At SVSU,
@GraceStark18
ran her prelim of the 60 hurdles in 8.25--the No. 1 time in the USA, slicing a tenth off the SR of 8.35 held by Bridgette Owens ('10) and Quenee Dale (14). It makes her No. 14 in US history. In the final ran 8.36, the
#4
time ever in MI.
VERY NICE!!!!
@masonferlic
qualifies for the OLYMPIC GAMES, placing 3rd in the steeple in 8:22.05!!!
(Yeah, I know he didn't go to high school in Michigan, but he's
#MinnesotaNice
-- This seriously could not happen to a more deserving guy)
Behind Yared Nuguse's amazing American Record in the indoor 3000,
@hobbs_kessler
runs 7:39.00 at BU (breaking the MI HS alumni record of 7:39.99 set in '20 by Grant Fisher). En route he passed 1600 in 4:03.23, 2K in 5:04.24. Kessler now =11 in US history (tied w Chelimo)
PREFONTAINE: Sadly most HS runners know of him mostly from inspirational (& impossible to source) t-shirt quotes.
@tandfn
is going into its archives to republish every major story of Pre's career. It's a fascinating look at how Pre became a legend.
Still trying to wrap my head around the unbelievable 16:43.3 by Ericka VanderLende
@RockfordXC
today on the Allendale course.
Consider this: she would have been 15th in the boys race and would have qualified for the Boys D1 finals as an individual. Unprecedented in D1??
Tonight Saline's boys hosted
#4
Salem in a fun track 5K under the lights. Salem senior Talha Syed ran a stunning solo 14:54.69 to become the 8th-fastest in Michigan history in the outdoor track 5000.
Unranked Saline had been flying under the radar but got the team win, 27-29.
Coldwater's Dylan Targgart just destroyed the 11th grade STATE RECORD in the shot put with a 65-9 at Williamston. The old record was 65-0.5 by T.J. Duckett of Loy Norrix 21 years ago. Targgart is now No. 6 in state history!
A 3:57 mile by a high schooler can sometimes suck all the oxygen from the room, so maybe a lot of Michigan HS fans didn't notice that Salem senior
@TalhaSyed18
popped a 9:05.38 for 3200 at SPIRE yesterday!
Thanks, this means a lot. The D1 meet is my favorite track day of the year, and I'd rather spend a day there than at the Olympics. It's a deep dive into the aspect of the sport that I love the most, and I'm thrilled that there are people out there who appreciate it! ❤️
@michtrack
In all seriousness, we are so fortunate to have an announcer at state finals who knows the sport inside and out, enhancing every race by giving a detailed background on many of the competitors as the races occur, with genuine enthusiasm. Thank you for another great state meet.
STATE RECORD ALERT!
A 9:51.21 over 3200 for
@AudreyDadamio
in Chicago on a 200 track. Reportedly split 4:50/5:01. Worth a 9:55.31 conversion for a full 2M--No. 3 in US prep history indoors, after only Mary Cain (9:38.68y) and Katelyn Tuohy (9:51.05y).
Michigan D1 1600m competitors (boys & girls) take note: There will be a second FAT camera at the 1609.34m mark, so if anyone wants a time for the full mile, just take a few more strides past the 1600 finish.
The official race, however, remains a 1600m race.
