You think #sidneycrosby rolls outta bed and into games and does this stuff? Nope... check out the down low body positioning during his practice reps; wide base, leaning into the defender like he’s playing the low post in basketball... practice hard, dream big

Although small area practices have their benefits, full ice drills and flow patterns teach players basic concepts and instill an ability to predict where players are going and how to attack open ice. Both small and large ice drill patterns are necessary to proper development

Noticing a lot of tendencies in 3 on 3 play so far this summer. Lots of perimeter play but not much drive to get to harder ice in the middle to create scoring chances. It’s easier to use skills on the outside of the rink but still necessary to push limits and drive to the inside.

DEFENSEMAN🚨 This is why you wheel the net tight... the first step has to be inside with an extended front knee to shield the puck from forecheckers. Physicality applies to offensive as well as defensive situations #dbhs #dreambig

You hear people talk about players having a “6th sense” on the ice, but it’s not some supernatural ability: it’s a constant state of counting and assessing pressure. Feel the pressure, know where your teammates are, evaluate BEFORE you get the puck

Interesting to think about how finishing offensive-minded drills with a sprint back to the dzone can enforce proper back-checking and defensive habits. Often times skills sessions focus solely on the offensive aspects of the game with no mind towards developing the total package

Receiving passes is a huge part of the game that often goes unnoticed. Not every pass is a tape to tape play & it’s because of the imperfection of game action that players must be able to maneuver their hips/feet to accommodate for errant play. Some #nhl clips here illustrate

Amazing to think about how often the center lane is open on breakouts. Most forechecks place F2 on the wall and F3 on the opposite side of the ice, which opens up the center for an easy outlet. Also means that D have to read through the net and avoid focusing totally on the wing

The idea that you have to move the puck wide and drive middle on initial rushes seems too simple; changing lanes and adding drop-back passes puts more pressure on d-men to adjust. Be dangerous. Be unpredictable. Be creative offensively. #nhl #mapleleafs #Capitals

ATTENTION DMEN🚨 Stay on the dot lines on rushes; angle offensive attackers to non-dangerous areas! No need to chase outside+open up lanes to the middle, especially in oddman situations such as this. Skilled players will make plays if given opportunities. Play smarter not harder!

There’s something to be said about learning positioning from both a forward and defensive POV. Too often players get hockey iQ tunnel vision; this leads players to become exclusively focused on “doing their job” and failing to see different points of attack or how plays develop

3 diff types of movement from defensemen on the blue line: first is a lateral/open-hip walk that changes puck angle and opens lanes to net, second is an advance down when given the opportunity, third is subtle cross to escape the shot blocker for a 1-timer. All useful tools.
