We had some unexpected visitors in the
#MetroTunnel
last week 🦊
The 2 best friends were quickly spotted by our intruder detection system.
A quick toot from one of our test trains had them trotting back out to safety.
#Melbourne
We’ve reached a new PB 💪
We ran 12 test trains between West Footscray to Hawksburn via the
#MetroTunnel
over a period of 3 hours.
That’s 18 trains an hour or 54 journeys, with trains running as often as 2 minutes apart. A major milestone for our testing program.

We are excited to announce the breakthrough of TBM Joan at Kensington. The first section of the Metro Tunnel is complete between Arden Station and the western tunnel entrance! Watch the moment Joan appears in the flooded retrieval shaft...
Get a glimpse of Melbourne’s underground with these rare photos showing our city’s geology. These photos were taken during roadheader excavation of the new State Library and Town Hall stations in the CBD. The intricate rock formations show varied grades of Melbourne Formation.
We're currently working 24/7 to realign the St Kilda Road tram tracks around the future Anzac Station tram and train interchange.
We've already completed underground services and track installation through the entire area, and have begun connecting overhead wires.
The Arden Station entrance is a step closer to completion, with the removal of steel falsework from under the arch.
Join us in admiring the arches without anything blocking the view 🤩
Below Swanston Street, more than 2,000 cubic metres of concrete will be poured to form Town Hall Station’s vaulted central arch.
Here you can see the 10m-high arch lined with waterproofing material and steel reinforcement cages in preparation for the concrete pours.
Things we love to see... High Capacity Metro Trains on the Sunbury Line!
When the
#MetroTunnel
opens in 2025, these new, bigger and better trains will run from Sunbury in the north west, through the Metro Tunnel, to Cranbourne and Pakenham in the south east.
Happy birthday City Loop! Today in 1985 Flagstaff Station opened to the public, marking the completion of the City Loop (then called the Melbourne Underground Rail Loop or MURL).
Here is one of our favourite home videos, an update on the MURL construction from the 1970s
Melbourne is now recreated in the world of Minecraft, thanks to a partnership with

Within Mini-Melbourne is the Metro Tunnel Archaeology Adventure, where students can take part in their own virtual archaeological dig in Swanston Street. ⛏🧱
A first glimpse of a key architectural feature of the new Arden Station entrance. More than 100,000 bricks will be used across 15 massive arches, all laid by hand into the precast concrete segments. The design echoes the rich industrial history of the area.
#Melbourne
’s famous tree-lined boulevard is having a makeover.
Landscaping is underway at
#AnzacStation
on St Kilda Road, with new green spaces connecting the station to surrounding parkland.
We’re planting more than 200 trees around the precinct, with 51 already in the ground.
Our first tunnel boring machine (TBM) is taking shape with final stages of assembly. The crown jewel and heaviest piece of the TBM – the 100-tonne red cutterhead – was lowered into the excavated station box and installed this week.
Let’s take a break from our past to look into our future!
We have just released our final station designs. Check out North Melbourne Station (circa 2025).
Five years ago there was a big hole in the ground where Grattan Street used to be.
Now, construction on
#ParkvilleStation
is nearly done and we’re completing finishing touches above-ground so that Grattan Street can reopen to traffic.
#MetroTunnel
We’ve finished glazing the main Parkville Station entrance canopy on Grattan Street.
It’s one of many design features that harness natural light, making the station brighter and more energy efficient ☀️

Look a little closer.. 🔍
Demolished to cater for the new State Library Station, you can see the outline of an old cottage that once stood against these bricks on Little La Trobe Street. 🏠
The dwelling is believed to date back to the 1850s!

💥 Breakthrough at State Library Station!
⚒ Two floors beneath La Trobe Street, we've broken through the wall dividing the future State Library Station and existing Melbourne Central Station.
Spectacular CBD! We love these great snaps taken 30m below Swanston Street showing rail tunnel excavation and station works at the new State Library Station site.
On your marks, get set, go! 🏎️
Although we don’t have tracks in the Metro Tunnel quite yet, here’s the next best thing.
Race through the western section of the Metro Tunnel with a ride aboard our multi-service vehicles 👇
Look at State Library Station 😍
We’ve started pouring the top slab of the central cavern platform. We still have some work to do, including installing architectural features but the station is starting to resemble its final form!
We have had our first major breakthrough at State Library Station!
Three roadheaders have met 30 metres under Swanston Street, connecting two caverns from A’Beckett Street and Franklin Street.
In 2023, we’ll start running test trains through the Metro Tunnel. Let's take a look back at everything we achieved in 2022 to set the stage for our biggest year yet.
Light at the end of the tunnel? More like track at the end of the tunnel! 🚉
We’ve finished installing our Australian-made steel rail throughout the twin 9km tunnels.
We’ve used high-performance concrete panels under the rail, similar to other world-class metro systems 🌏
We’re now running test trains at full speed in the Metro Tunnel.
That’s up to 80km/h – the same speed they’ll travel when the tunnel opens to passengers in 2025.
Check out the lift and escalator action at

, powered by 100%

.
These lifts and escalators will also use regenerative drive technology – meaning energy generated from movement is captured and reused, rather than wasted ⚡

She’s off and tunnelling! Our mega borer Joan has begun her journey to create the one-kilometre section of the Metro Tunnel between our Parkville Station site and the new State Library Station.
This render is becoming a reality at
#StateLibraryStation
🏛️
When it's ready in 2025, it will have a direct passenger connection to Melbourne Central Station and City Loop services.
#MetroTunnel
And for our next trick, we will pull TBM Joan out of the empty retrieval shaft!
Joan has finished the Arden Station to Kensington leg of the Metro Tunnel, and our first TBM breakthrough of the project
What a difference 3 years make! 🏗️🧱
Brick by brick (all 104,000 of them),
#ArdenStation
’s 15 entrance arches were installed in 2021. In 2024, the underground station and its grand entrance are now finished.
#MetroTunnel
Trains have returned to the Cranbourne, Pakenham and Frankston lines following our 19-day construction blitz at South Yarra.
Thank you for your understanding and patience as we completed major works on the Metro Tunnel’s eastern tunnel entrance.

Platform screen doors, ceiling systems and drum lights are just some of the features being trialled ✔️
Did you know
#ArdenStation
is our shallowest metro station? Take the journey from the platform 14 metres underground up to the main entrance on Laurens Street.
#MetroTunnel
There's something special about these 2 new trains on the Cranbourne/Pakenham Line.
They are equipped with High Capacity Signalling, which allows trains to run closer together, for more frequent services! These trains are helping test the system between Westall and South Yarra.
🎵 It's me, hi. I'm
#ParkvilleStation
, it's me 🎵
Kerbing, gutters and asphalt at the Parkville precinct are being installed swiftly as we move closer to finishing major construction.
Looks like Parkville Station is entering a new … era 🦋🌟👗🧣🏙🐍💘
#MetroTunnel
In North Melbourne, all eyes are on the new Arden Station, where these striking arches are now grouted and bolted into place.
Our crews are now busy dismantling and removing the steel scaffolding frame, to reveal the full impact of the station's 15m-high entrance.
The dig is complete for all four tunnel boring machines! We’re proud to announce our biggest milestone to date with the completion of TBM tunnelling. 🎉
The Metro Tunnel Project’s summer works program at South Yarra will finish four days ahead of schedule. Trains will resume on the Cranbourne, Pakenham and Frankston lines between Flinders Street and Caulfield from Monday 27 January. Thanks for your patience.
We've switched on our new rail substation in South Yarra - the first to be built underground in Victoria!
Below the South Yarra Siding Reserve, the substation will convert mains power to run trains and signalling equipment in the Metro Tunnel and on the Cran/Pak Line.
40 metres below Swanston Street, State Library Station is coming together before our eyes.
Our crews are well underway in creating the permanent structures, such as the station columns and platforms.
Check it out below 👇
Touchdown at Parkville Station 👀
We’re installing this canopy at one of two station entrances on the doorstep of some of Melbourne’s biggest hospitals.
Parkville Station will give Victorians direct train access to this world class medical precinct for the very first time!
As
#StateLibraryStation
enters a new phase of construction, it’s time to say goodbye to the Franklin Street West acoustic shed 👋
This is one of 3 sheds built to fully enclose construction activity (noise, light and dust) while we build State Library Station.

Happy 37th birthday to the City Loop! 🎂🥳
On this day in 1985, Flagstaff Station opened to the public, marking the completion of the City Loop and revolutionising how people travel in Melbourne.
Take a look at some of our favourite throwback photos of the City Loop.
Surprise! We’ve reopened Flinders Street westbound lane between Elizabeth and Swanston streets ahead of schedule. The lane is now open to traffic. The eastbound lane remains closed. Thank you for your patience while we complete Town Hall Station.
#Melbourne
Looks like it's bustling down in Town Hall Station! 🚧 The construction team is full steam ahead with the installation of waterproofing materials, steel, and concrete for the grand central station cavern. Check out the construction in action.
Hello TBM Alice!
We welcome TBM Alice and her tunnelling team as she arrives at Town Hall Station after her journey under the Yarra from Domain. Watch TBM Alice make her triumphant entrance underground in the CBD!
