Wheel slip causes the traction motors that propel the locomotive to spin more quickly as the locomotive tries to gain traction. PTC’s software interprets this as the train is speeding, can stop the train and then force it to operate at a reduced speed.
Union Pacific is currently evaluating the purchase of equipment to use wire brushes to scrape crushed leaves from the rails. Metra is working with Wabtec, the developer of the PTC system used by Metra, to find a solution that reduces PTC’s sensitivity to wheel traction issues.
