Malay cooking is tedious - so many ingredients, dicing, blending, purée, sauté, spices, mixes, balancing strong flavors, mostly “agak-agak” (no fixed recipes). So raya open houses are very special. It’s like “I poured my heart and sweat into these dishes and this is all for you”
I can get behind this. When we go to Korea, we put on hanbok and take photos. When we go to Japan, we wear kimono. We have beautiful things here, too. My only suggestion would be to do indoor photoshoots in old Peranakan houses instead of jalan2 Jonker sbb panas la wei panas
That McDonalds used to be where we’d get our default “last meal” before the plane ride - it would always be buzzing, even at 1,2,3,6 am. What a different world.
Penduduk Sepang dan sekitarnya bersedialah. PPV Movenpick KLIA (5,000 dos/sehari) dan PPV Industri Terminal KLIA (1,000 dos/sehari) akan bermula memberikan vaksin Isnin hadapan 5-Julai. Ayuh maksimukan Vaksinasi!

The airport staff in Amsterdam seemed to be puzzled (proly a lil racist here ngl) that Malaysians don’t need visas for tourism in the UK. Me, clearing throat, trying to be helpful: “we are a former colony”
Tak payah nak cakap pasal lockdown lah. People have no savings anymore. Salaries have declined. The income distribution in Malaysia has shifted left. I doubt there’ll be any more cash aid. We need to take all steps to make sure this isn’t even a choice we have to make.
My husband is 6ft4. When I first met him I said “must be weird to be tall” and he said - I’m one of the shorter men in my family - and then I met his 7ft cousins 🤣
A baby died today. Her parents won’t get to put her to sleep tonight, won’t be able to sing her songs or bounce her in their arms. A baby died today. More people will die in the coming weeks. People, not numbers. PLEASE mask up & send prayers/good thoughts to our front-liners 🙁
I dunno, man. My husband and I met when we were teenagers. This year is our 10th year wedding anniversary. Our first date was on a park bench where we ate bread and talked about random things for 4 hours. Sometimes you don’t need fancy, you just need the right person 😅🤷🏾♀️
It’s quite strange to me to have CVs in Malaysia with photographs on them. What is the rationale for this? In many other countries, this would be seen as a another way to discriminate against applicants.
Malaysia is a small country and we don’t invest much in elite sports, so I’ll always be very proud of our athletes when we win anything - especially the Olympics - because look at how you’ve bloomed despite where you were planted
Small business shoutout! I went to get gas yday and I saw an uncle with a bunch of beautifully handmade rattan goods by the side of the road. He said he’s a mobile seller and goes from neighborhood to neighborhood. He asked whether I could take pix and put on social media 😃 1/
Oh my. Please don’t do this. If you work your butt off in your 20s - you’ll enter your 30s with a host of mental and physical health issues. Burnout is so very real. We’ve been conditioned to just keep running - when we should be sitting down. Seriously.
Unsolicited career advice:
Work your butt off in your 20s. Forget about work-life balance & all the other BS you hear about. You're still young, can test yourself physically & train your mind to work under long, intense pressure.
Identify limits, have fun & keep fit for energy.
The woman who fell into a sinkhole near Masjid India is believed to have been swept away by strong underground currents.
"There is a strong water current that flows to the end of the road.
"We've covered the area, but she has not been found," says KL police.

Heard a story from a friend stranded on the highway about how he ditched his car and walked 3 km to a hotel with his wife - only to find that the hotel was charging RM 400 a night. Clown business. Regulators should have capped hotel prices along highways to avoid this
The fact that Marie Kondo, leader of millennials who were taught (by her) to only keep things that spark joy, has given up on tidying up her house now that she has 3 kids, is really sending me 🤣 ☠️
We are NOT a poor country. We are quite rich. To have things collapse spectacularly like this around us - to have citizens going hungry, children going to bed with empty stomachs - is at the very least INFURIATING to me.
Help out where and when you can, but never forget this.
We had a rule that said your bra had to be “skin colored” and my friend got in trouble because she was wearing a black bra and got into trouble and started yelling: “but this IS my skin color” 😂
She was right 🤷🏾♀️
I’ve seen so many loved ones suffer from burnout due to this “hustle” culture. It eats at you. Working non-stop and for what? I would not glorify this la. Issue is that if you keel over one day, the system will just replace you with somebody else. Please take care of yourself.
My biggest achievement this raya is realizing that I raised a little boy who offers to refill guests’ cups with cold water and asks them: “How was your dinner? Was it good? Does your stomach feel good?” And that’s all I need 🥰
My husband said ppl on TikTok are calling Bukit Jelutong the “Ohio of Malaysia” and as a resident, I am both offended and laughed nonstop for 3 minutes at this comparison 🤣
Normalize saying: I made a mistake. I am sorry. I need help. That is outside of my field of expertise. I don’t know the answer to that. Then: This won’t happen again. I’ll do better by doing X. Let me check on this & get back to you. Here’s A who is a better fit to answer this.
Just spoke to a roadside nasi lemak seller who told me that her prices may have to be raised due to the rise in ingredient costs. In the coming months, as your prepared food gets more expensive, please don’t blame the small traders. It’s really, completely, out of their control
I was in the KLCC area last week and decided to hop on by to check out Kino and the Deepavali decor. This peacock was really gorgeous. Some other malls barely made any effort - shame on them.
I’m blocking everybody and anybody who dares to defend this mess and its perpetrators. How dare you all - in the face of so much suffering. How dare you. I am so angry

If you like pizza, you should try Khirwan’s brick oven pizza in Bukit Jelutong. They operate from a food truck with the oven in the back. Delicious stuff, freshly made. This was the beef pepperoni - with caramelized onions, mozzarella, and a healthy sprinkling of oregano.
My husband is getting his P license (long story). The instructor taught him the “formula” how to parallel park in the particular slot in the particular driving school but not how to actually understand the process and do it anywhere else. Me: Welcome to the 🇲🇾 education system
I want to start a chain of public libraries in Malaysia - free for all, survives on corporate donations (bc companies should be doing more to enhance community spaces), and housed in vacant spaces
My son, almost 7, describing a trip to Penang: “You have to pass by this place called Eye-Poh on the sign but in Malay it’s called Eee-Poh”

Do you remember when we had 44 cases nationwide per day and we were worried? Because I do. And now we are at 44 deaths. Many more will die before we see the wave recede.
I know many young Malaysians are self-conscious about you speak in English and whether you are fluent enough and etc etc but honestly, many many Western people don’t speak or write anywhere near your ability and yet their confidence is off the charts 😖🤣 So yes, you can do it
I urge you - again - to please ask for permission before you pass on somebody’s number. I do this for all of my contacts - it is truly the bare minimum - and it’s really not very difficult and not terrible to expect this of others

Teaching is a privilege - to work this job is to realize the weight you have as an educator, for good and for bad, on your students. If you cannot understand this and how much harm you can cause - you shouldn't be a teacher.
Today, before trying to scam me, a scammer asked me whether I’d prefer to speak in English or Bahasa Malaysia. This is a symbol of true progress as a society. We have transcended language
I spent this morning thinking about explaining why Malaysians are super into sports days for kids. On average, I don’t think we are super physically fit people or particularly enjoy exercise?
Then I realized it’s the PESTA spirit. We like to berpesta. We are festive ppl 😂
I am realizing how spoilt my cats are because I just fed a kucing kurap at a restaurant a chicken wing and he ate the entire thing - bones and all. Kucing rumah doesn’t even eat kibbles that are out for more than a day sebab lemau not crispy enough 🤡
So fragile is the construct of faith in Malaysia that Muslims cannot be allowed to explore the world around them. We increasingly don’t allow ppl to think for themselves, to choose for themselves
Every day we fall deeper into an endless hole of societal destruction
Malaysia has the best pineapple in the world - full stop. For an extra experience, lightly salt your cut pineapples - it’s a lovely tip I learned awhile back. Salt right before you eat. It makes it taste sweeter and more complex.
People have warned about this for years and if it finally happens well padan muka lah. Maybe powerful ppl will get upset once they can’t have helpers at home anymore
We are a tiny shrimp trying to bark at a whale
This T20/M40/B40 classification has gotten us all weird. E.g. T20 is about >11K household income per month and above. So a household that makes 110K per month is in the same category as one that makes 11K per month based on this classification. But there are worlds within the T20
Whenever I leave Malaysia for work, I get really depressed at the possibilities of what we could be (a truly top tier country) if we didn't screw up so much on so many things. So much potential. It's infuriating, really. Our diversity is our strength but we never learn
Somebody asked me why I was (is?) invested in Kate Middleton going missing and I said - as a citizen of a former British colony, I am invested in the crumbling of the empire
I recognize this feeling from when Trump won in 2016. At the possibility of a racial supremacist fascist government, I feel all the feelings again. My heart goes out to minorities in this country - do know that a huge number of ppl didn’t vote for this and this home is yours, too
Mungkin ramai dah lupa apa yg terjadi sejak pandemik bermula. Mungkin kita kena ingat balik. Manusia senang lupa. Ppl say elephants never forget.
I remember lockdown after lockdown. To buy time, it was said. So we menurut perintah. But then it happened again & again.
Things that Malaysians have done bc petrol has been so cheap:
We buy houses far away from work, contributing to urban sprawl
We buy too many 🚗 or bigger 🚗 than we need
We do not value public transport, which gives an excuse not to improve it, which makes us not value it 🔄
My hot take for today is that if you really want to see langit-bumi, you should sit in an academic webinar with Indonesian academics and then Malaysian academics. If you want more spice, you can also do this for Thailand. And then you can go cry and eat cake. I am not lying.
I feel very sad that people really don’t want to wear masks anymore. It’s one of the few things that keeps my unvaccinated toddler, alongside millions other small kids who can’t get the jab yet, safe. It’s very little to ask of society. So very little.
Kuih is very sick with kidney failure and we didn’t think he’d see 2022 but here he is. We are waiting for him to signal that he is ready to say goodbye. So far, he’s still doing his cat thing. He’s been a good friend and we will try to give him a dignified death.
Am I reading this correctly? We are proud to be one of the first countries to allow ppl to pull their retirement savings out? Maybe it didn’t happen elsewhere because....it’s a really, really myopic and cruel policy decision?
This should go without saying, but I’m Malaysian so I will say it: you do not need to be Muslim to be in solidarity for the Palestinians. You just need to be humans. Nobody is free until we are all free.
From 16 March, our face mask policy is changing.
Where we’re clear the destination you’re travelling to doesn’t require a face mask on board, it will become optional 😷 ✈️
Please continue to respect fellow passengers' mask preferences in these instances.

I’m not a climate scientist, but it’s clear that Malaysia is not ready for the higher temps to come. I dunno, man. Things are noticeably worse now with all of this
I went to check out Hari Kraf Kebangsaan, a week-long event on Jalan Conlay, this AM with my mom. I’ve been here before, really recommend it if you like browsing for crafts, baju, etc - and if you like chatting with the makers. They have a 30 off every 100 ringgit spent deal now
I wish reading wasn’t such an expensive hobby. Walked into Kino briefly and walked out poorer, it felt. Every damn time
Since private buying of books - libraries are substitutes, I also wish that we had better public libraries here
DG Hisham has shown that press conferences can be done in a mask.
Lecturers and teachers have been teaching for hours in masks.
Small children, like teeny tiny humans, are now trained to keep on a mask for hours at a time.

PSA: Schools are open. Children are back. We’ve vaccinated barely 0.1% nationally. While the economy reopens, please keep this in mind - SLOW THE SPREAD. Limit activities in public. INFECTIONS ARE STILL HIGH. Do not get used to 1-2K per day as being “good” - it is HIGH.
You have to show 2 dose vaxx certificate to go eat at a mamak store, mainly outdoors. But you don’t have to show one to return to university in October, indoors and air-conditioned. There are no guidelines on ventilation.
Good luck to us
I said goodbye to Kuih today. He stopped being himself this week, stopped running to me when I opened a can of tuna. It was time. We gave him a quick and painless death after ten wonderful years together. I wish I could’ve done more.
We will miss him forever. Rest well, buddy.
Kuih is very sick with kidney failure and we didn’t think he’d see 2022 but here he is. We are waiting for him to signal that he is ready to say goodbye. So far, he’s still doing his cat thing. He’s been a good friend and we will try to give him a dignified death.
The wife of Stockton Rush, the pilot of the missing Titanic tour submarine, is actually the great-great-granddaughter of two first-class passengers who died on the Titanic, records show.
A fictionalized version of the couple is even featured in the movie.
We went to the playground today with our toddler. Another little girl came with her dad wearing a pretty, fluffy pink dress. After the girl left, our 2 yo went: “Where did the princess go??!?”
Daddy: “She went home to her castle.”
Toddler: “Wow 😯”
Your weekly reminder that no amount of financial planning in the world can alleviate the sufferings of somebody who just doesn’t have enough money to even feed themselves
Take public transit, people say - tho I have seen 0 evidence that we actually have the capacity to cater to, say, 25% of car drivers switching over to trains
Malaysians supporting the Palestinian cause but [not supporting our country signing the UN Refugee Convention + accepting more refugees here + (biggest +) awarding equal human rights to citizens such as the right to work and path to citizenship] - your words ring hollow
This is really ridiculous. The amount of racial and religious tension in this country is truly off the charts.
My heart breaks for a Malaysia I yearn for, which is not this one
KK Mart and one of its former suppliers are expected to be charged tomorrow with causing religious offence, in connection to the controversial socks bearing the word Allah.
Malaysiakini was made to understand that besides the two companies, the charges would be levelled against
Given how badminton unites Malaysians more than any unity program ever conducted ever, I suggest we divert resources to supporting badminton players more and slash budgets for nation-building programs 😛
I think we forgot how bad Covid was. So many ppl died every day. Parents ripped from young kids, harrowing stories of pregnant women gasping for breath, large groups of old people, rare but still happened kids deaths from MIS-C. Ex ante: any approved vaccine was a good vaccine
Somebody pointed out to me that feelings can always be mixed. You can love someone with your whole soul but realize that they have so many things about them that you hate or would like to change.
Similar to tanah airku. A hard, hard place to love.
Today is the last day you can renew your drivers license without a penalty - they will make you retake your exam or something if you don’t. Check your wallet - I was unpleasantly surprised 😂
I'll never forget how our country decided to allocate the AstraZeneca covid vaccines through panicked booking online - only for people who live in urban areas (KL and Penang?) - like you'd allocate Taylor Swift concert tickets. What even, man
Anyway. I dream of a Malaysia that has such excellent universities that parents don’t immediately prefer sending their kids abroad. That we are very competitive globally, so that even parents who can afford paying three times over, send their kids locally.
Dreaming is free
