If nothing else, the simple act of gathering people from across the dept w/ varying roles and perspectives allows us to bring down the siloes “at home,” learn to communicate using a common language, and understand that DEI is a core value of those who lead us.

@UABSurgery @colinalexmartin The focus on ⬆️diversity often targets hiring when equal, if not more, effort should be placed on retention. Sustainably ⬆️diversity requires sometimes uncomfortable introspection and a willingness to fix the ways the current culture may lack safety for those not in the majority.
