Quick count of where I landed with
@herhoopstats
bracketology:
🏀66/68 teams in the field
🏀62/68 teams within one seed line (including both misses from the field were in my first 4 out)
🏀15/16 teams hosting the first two rounds
Wore a Sue Bird t-shirt to the grocery store and the cashier goes "OMG did you see that photo of Taurasi hugging the other team's player with the ball in the air. That was amazing."
I love Connecticut.
Unpopular opinion but, I like that the top 16 host for WBB. It increases the value of the regular season & creates great atmospheres for early round games.
Neutral sites = emptier gyms (men's too!). Equity between the tournaments doesn't mean things need to be done the same way
Big night for Olivia Nelson-Ododa in tonight's preseason game for the Sparks vs Seattle. ONO played 35 minutes and has 15 points, 12 boards and 5 assists
Aubrey Griffin had 12 rebounds in just 19 minutes. Griffin's effort on the glass and defensive end, combined with Azzi Fudd's explosive third quarter completely changed the trajectory of the game for UConn.
Paige Bueckers and Aaliyah Edwards could be expected to deliver tonight. Ice Brady was the difference maker IMO. If she doesn't get the minutes and experience in the Big East tournament that she got when Edwards broke her nose, I don't know that UConn goes to Cleveland.
Geno: "We have the best player in America. The numbers in this world of analytics says that she is, the stat sheet says it. And everyone that watched knows it."
Aliyah Boston finishes with 17 points, 14 rebounds, 5 assists, 5 steals and 3 blocks.
That's the first 15pt/10reb/5ast/5stl/3blk game in D1 WBB this season. Going back to 2009-10 there has only been 5 such games, none in a power conference.

@herhoopstats
We heard so much about how the Big East deserves more respect from the coaches during the Big East tournament.
This is exactly why. Crieghton finished third in the Big East and they're going to the Elite Eight. The league isn't just UConn and everyone else.
Nika Muhl is currently averaging more assists per game than 111 teams this season. That's more assists than over 30% of the 361 Division I teams.
Absolutely insane.

@herhoopstats
Nika Muhl now ranks first in the country in assists per game (10.3).
Azzi Fudd ranks second in points per game (30.0), just behind Aneesah Morrow (30.3).
Muhl and Fudd are both doing that with 2/3 of their first three games coming against top-10 opponents.
Despite the injuries, the foul trouble, the lack of depth - UConn is heading back to the Final Four. Incredible from Paige Bueckers. 28 points, 10 rebounds, 6 assists, 3 steals. 24 points from Aaliyah Edwards. Big night from Ice Brady off the bench.
Missed this live from Geno's press conference on ONO making her free throws and LOL
"There was definitely -- I don't want to say hand of God, but there was definite intervention there for
those two to go in."
UConn shoots 37% from the floor, turns the ball over 19 times, has ONO and Edwards in foul trouble in most of the game.. and advances the the National Championship game.
Just as we all predicted
The discourse around the Oregon St transfers is wild. They signed up to play in one of the best WBB leagues in the country. That's no longer the case in Corvallis b/c of factors out of their control.
They're competitors, they want to go somewhere to compete at the highest level.
Caroline Ducharme and Azzi Fudd combined for 17 of UConn's 26 points in the final quarter. UConn got it done in the 4th today, and it was the freshmen leading the way.
You're telling me that the roof is leaking badly enough to delay the SEC tournament in game, and this is the arena the NCAA chose to host two regionals this year?
UConn is a No. 1 seed despite a loss to Marquette, because the Huskies have 8 (!) wins over teams in the NET top-25. That's not bias, its a really, really strong non-conference resume.
Also Marquette is a top-40 NET team.
Watching Moriah Jefferson really thrive in the Lynx lineup after struggling in Dallas / with injuries has been one of my favorite parts of this W season
Geno looking forward to next year:
"Provided we don't have to navigate a season like this year. Knock on wood we stay healthy, I expect to be back here next year."
Geno: "Peacocks and the Bluejays, man. Great stories."
Adds that a lot of teams in the Big East don't have nearly as much money as many Power 5 programs, but what they do have is "damn good basketball players"
Aliyah Boston is leading the country in Win Shares (and by a ways compared to everyone but Lee) while only playing 27.6 minutes per game. She also ranks first in WS/40 and PER.
I don't think the national POY race is particularly close.
So much of the best talent in this year's Final Four is going to be back next year, and in some case multiple years.
Aliyah Boston. Haley Jones. Cameron Brink. Paige Bueckers. Azzi Fudd. Hailey Van Lith.
How does that not get you so excited for this weekend and the future.
The transformation this UConn team has made since the early December loss to Texas is evident. Yes North Carolina, Louisville and Marquette aren't the same caliber of opponents as the Huskies losses, but this team is clearly much better than it was in Austin.
Absolutely insane performance from Caitlin Clark.
But 17 from McKenna Warnock, 14 from Gabbie Marshall - that is the difference between Iowa last year and Iowa this year, or even the start of this season to Iowa now. That's why they're going to Dallas.
Geno on Dorka: "I don't think we saw the real Dorka last year. It takes a while to get into the swing of it... She's going to have a big year. I'm excited for it."
As ugly as UConn's offense was at times tonight, just 7 turnovers is a huge win for UConn. First time the Huskies have committed fewer than 10 turnovers this season.
The way we got here is not at all what was expected, but UConn vs South Carolina is probably the championship matchup most would have predicted to start the season
Geno says he'd pay to see Villanova play the 7th best team in a Power Five conference in the first round.
Adds that Maddy Siegrist is one of the ten best players in the country.
From her Instagram, Paige Bueckers appears to have opened a basketball court in Minnesota with StockX which is very cool. Her outfit for the opening is equally as cool.
Shea Ralph at Vanderbilt this season:
✅ First 20 win season since 2012-13
✅ First NCAA tournament appearance in a decade
✅ First NCAA tournament win since 2013
Commodores advance to play No. 5 Baylor in the first round
Geno Auriemma on Aaliyah Edwards: "There isn't anything that she hasn't done since the season started. Today was just another example of it... There isn't an aspect of the game where she isn't playing at an All-American level."
An idea of how far spread
@UConnWBB
influence is in New England: an entire girls basketball team from Vermont just arrived at tonight's exhibition game against Team USA in front of me
Geno said he told Nika at halftime that she need to make two threes in the second half, so when she made one he was "overcome with joy" which led to his dancing on the bench
If you're Maryland, obviously a good win. Really nice rebound from Diamond Miller after her first half.
Think you have to be concerned about allowing this UConn roster put up 78.
This is the first I've watched any non-UConn men's basketball this year and we really need to get rid of playing halves. It's truly borderline unwatchable compared to the quarters on the women's side.
The fact that 19-11 Oregon was considered in the mix for a top 4 seed heading into the Pac-12 tournament because of injuries, but Villanova (23-7) isn't considered a lock in the field with three of their losses coming without (should be All-American) Maddy Siegrist is ridiculous.
List of players in the country having 50-40-90 seasons with at least 10 FGA per game:
Azzi Fudd & Lou Lopez Senechal
Make that a 50-50-90 season for Lou.

@herhoopstats
Paige Bueckers is showing out, but UConn also got really solid minutes from their freshmen to fuel this run at the end of the 2nd to take the 15 point lead.
Ashlynn Shade is +18 in her 6 minutes; Ice Brady is +14 in her 7 minutes.
When I said UConn needed to not just win but pass the eye test this weekend to move up in seeding, this is exactly what I meant
Huskies are steamrolling a good Marquette team on both ends
