There was a time when cyclists trained by just riding their bikes. When the great Fausto Coppi was asked for training advice he simply said: “Ride your bike, ride your bike - ride your bike.” Athletes and swimmers trained the same way, but then they discovered interval training in the late 1930s and early ‘40s. One of the early adopters of intervals in cycling was this man, Louison Bobet, world champion, classics winner and the first rider to win the Tour de France three times in a row (1953, 1954, 1955). It was his brother’s idea. Jean Bobet was a good pro cyclist who became a really great writer. This is what he told Chris about the way the cycling Bobets from Brittany trained. “The Australian swimmer Dawn Fraser, who won three gold medals at three consecutive Olympics, started me thinking. She used interval training a lot, as I think all Australian swimmers did. So I started to experiment,” he said. Pretty soon he came up with an interval session adapted for professional road cycling that he and Louison always did in the run up to important races. “We’d always get 800 to 1200 steady kilometres in the training diary before we started faster sessions, and we split the sessions into three sections. “We did one hour warming up at 25 to 27 kph, then one hour of intervals, followed by 30 minutes of decontraction (cooling down) at 15kph. The middle hour, the intervals, went like this - a series of 12 sets of two kilometres at 40 kph, each one separated by one kilometre at 30 kph. It was easy to keep track, two kilometres in three minutes followed by one kilometre in two minutes, repeated 12 times. “We took turns at pace-setting during each effort, using a 52x16 gear, with the easy bits done in 45x18. We watched our own and each other’s style, too. You can do that when making a short effort. You focus on riding, on keeping your back low, your elbows and knees tucked in.” Quite a modern approach, isn’t it? Focussing not just on speed, but technique at speed and consistency. And they did these sessions 70 years ago. 📸Cycling Legends Collection #cycling #cyclingphotos #roadcycling #cyclingshots #cyclingpics #retrocycling #cyclinghistory #cyclinglegends

Ercole Baldini was the brightest star of his generation, but you may have never heard of him. He was brilliant at his peak 60-odd years ago, but he shone all too briefly. At the end of 1958 Ercole Baldini was the world professional road race champion, the Giro d’Italia winner, the reigning Olympic road race champion, Italian national champion, he was a 25 years-old second-year pro, but his winning days were nearly over. He had eight victories in his first year with the professionals, 14 in his second, but only five in 1959. And that was it, Baldini continued racing until 1964 winning 13 more races in all that time. What happened to him? There were two opposing opinions at the time. Some said it was money that wrecked Baldini’s career, whereas he and his supporters said it was injury and illness. It’s certainly a complicated and at times agonising story. One from the archives today, as we have a day off after a busy week on our book tour! Read this week's Long Read - The Supernova of Cycling on the Cycling Legends website. 📸 Cycling Legends Collection 💬@chrissidwells 🔗 #cycling #cyclinglife #cyclingphotos #roadbike #cyclist #ciclismo #bicycle #roadcycling #instacycling #cyclingshots #bikes #bicicleta #ride #instabike #retrocycling #cyclinghistory #cyclinglegends

#RMCLive
