As a legal immigrant physician, deeply grateful for the opportunities this country has given me, Iāll likely spend over a decade contributing to US societyādelivering highly specialized care, driving innovative cancer research, and faithfully paying my taxesābefore even starting to see the colors of a green card. And thatās OK. But this experience has shaped my views. I firmly advocate for legal immigration reform while viewing the growing wave of illegal immigration with significant concern. Still, we must give CĆ©sar what is CĆ©sarās: thereās a profound difference between 'selectively enforcing the law' or 'burdening taxpayers with expensive charity' versus ensuring basic human rights for elderly individuals who have lived on American soil for decades, laboring and contributing to the nationās success throughout their working years. As the fellow Latino colleague eloquently pointed out: 'In a nation built on the labor and contributions of immigrants, every older adult in America deserves the chance to live a dignified and healthy life.' I would also add this must encompass a dignified death, where their psychosocial and symptomatic needs are compassionately addressed by our health system. And to argue otherwise is not just senseless and inhumaneāitās a cruel betrayal of the very values the nation claims to uphold.
They are your neighborsāyour nanny, the worker who harvested the strawberries on your table, the roofer who repaired your home, the cleaner who ensured your streets were clean after the snowstorm. Theyāve paid taxes. Theyāre over 65. And there will be about 1 million of them by 2030. Yet, they canāt access most health care servicesābecause they are undocumented. 1/2
