📚🦈 Exciting News! 🦈📚
My debut book for adults, "SHARK CODE: LESSONS FROM NATURE'S FIERCEST PREDATORS" is here! Dive into a fresh perspective on sharks and oceans - stay tuned for updates 🌊

Just a reminder that a “scientist” does not need a PhD. THEY DO NOT. I am 100% a believer of that statement - even if I personally am pursuing my PhD (essential for long term dreams). Stop telling people they aren’t scientists because they don’t have a certain degree.
Today I applied to a PhD program and mini cried, because I have been working so hard to get to this point. Whether or not I make it in, I’m telling you this because I want you to do things that scare you, too! Don’t think you can do x? Try it- you may be pleasantly surprised.
No one is here to take my picture so I took in on self-timer. But, happy first day of school to me as I start my PhD! Here I am holding my (ever changing) Curtin University research proposal for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.
Yesterday I had the opportunity to dive down to about 250m and see three different shark species in duty, filming them as they came close to the sub. It was absolutely surreal and I feel so blessed. Here’s a sneak peek of the life down here!
I work with big predators. I give them their space, I respect them, and I always keep in mind that they have the ability to kill me. As someone who studies predator behaviour, I’m glad I had to knowledge of what to do when a crocodile bit into my calf last night and dragged me.
The good thing about being a marine biologist is having an A+ comeback when someone asks for nudes. Nudes? Sure I’ve got tons of them, mate. Let me show you all of these pics of immensely colourful molluscs (aka nudibranchs) I have saved on my phone. This one looks like a bunny.
Dear

viewers,
If you don't have experience handling

... don't touch them. Don't ride them. Don't kiss them. Don't grab their tails. And don't try to put them into tonic immobility.

AT MY OWN WEDDING. I talked about fisheries science in a literal ball gown and tiara and it led to a collab! Friends, stop tearing each other down bc of how one looks. We are

when we celebrate one another.
One more 2018 celebration: I accepted a full ride scholarship to develop policies for

I have kept this a secret FOR WAY TOO LONG: I am going to be a published

Today I had a conversation about wildlife reputations and our attitudes towards some species vs others. For example, people tend to LOVE orcas but vilify great white sharks as “monsters.” But orcas eat sharks.
What animals do YOU think need a major PR revision?
What is your favourite ocean creature and why? I guess I'll go first! Mine is Hippocampus bargibanti, known commonly as the pygmy seahorse, because it is cute and little and fierce and PINK and adorable. I *love* them & the fact we still have so much to learn about these cuties.
Didn’t bring flags to

High fin! Hello

Your daily reminder that we share our planet with animals that live hundreds of years - like the Greenland shark, pictured here by Eric Ste Marie - and if you don't think that is ✨THE COOLEST THING EVER✨ then I can't help you.

Hello, my name is Melissa and today I made a little girl’s day because I showed her I had just as much arm hair as she does. She was me when I was younger- hated it, wanted it shaved off. But as an adult, no one really cares 🤷🏼♀️ I’m glad showing her that her body is normal helped.

What’s this? Why, it’s my first bilingual book of my children’s reading series that involves science, diverse scientists, and Aztec mythology. Revolves around a young girl who loves science-despite her strained relationship w/math- and ends up meeting many cool women in STEM!

Second night of deep sea sub dives. Saw 10 of a deep sea shark in situ (that’s what the other tweet was supposed to say but I’m running on low sleep so YOLO) and my life was absolutely made as it devoured bait in front of our eyes. Wow.
The date is set to go from PhD student ➡️ official PhD candidate! PPT presentation is set and ready to go, just need to fine tune the proposal. I could cry from how happy I am & how surreal this feels. Thanks to all who have supported me thus far!

Whale Sharks Have Teeth On Their Eyes
Yup, you read that title correctly. According to a newly published study, whale
#sharks
(Rhincodon typus) eyes are covered with dermal denticles, which is a novel mechanism of eye protection in vertebrates.
