The National Consumer Commission has hit Vodacom with a R1 million fine for charging a 75% cancellation penalty on sim-only contracts. Vodacom refused to cancel the contract unless the 75% penalty was paid. This is in contravention of the Consumer Protection Act. Frankly,

You need to check with your bank if you have credit insurance but I can tell you that @CapitecBankSA & @AfricanBank cover pays the premium, up to 12 months, for clients on short time or compulsory unpaid leave where the reduction in basic income is 20% or more.

NSFAS issued a press release today to say 5000 students will have funding revoked. Info from SARS shows their household income is above R350k. The affected students will have 14 days to petition this decision by submitting proof of change of income to NSFAS for review

Why I recommend tax-free savings accounts. This investment I made 18 years ago for R50k. Wasn't the best preforming but time compounded. On redeeming I paid R100k in tax! = a third of the profit/ double the original investment. If you are investing long-term, be tax efficient!

So I did a quick calculation on the 0.25% (points) cut. On R1 million mortgage you save R165. If you keep the monthly installment the same - you pay off a year earlier and save over R76 000 in interest #ratecut

Currently @StandardBankZA Bank is offering home loan customers an option to fix their mortgage repayments to pre-June 2023 rate hike. The installment can be fixed for 9 months, but keep in mind that this extends the loan period as the installment is fixed, not the interest rate.

Interest rates cut by another 50bps. That brings prime rate down to 7.25%. Remember (if you are not financially stretched) rather keep your bond and car installments the same - use the rate cut to reduce the period of your loan rather than the monthly installment.

My submission to National Treasury is to allow access to R22,500 of RA or preservation fund. That's the amount one can take tax-free when making a withdrawal. It's small enough not to wipe out retirement provision, but puts food on the table.
