Karla Sofía Gascón, star of Emilia Pérez, is facing backlash over resurfaced social media posts from 2020-2021, in which she appears to share controversial views on Muslims, George Floyd, and diversity at the Oscars. Many of the posts were deleted on Thursday after gaining attention. One of the resurfaced posts, dated November 23, 2020, reads: "I’m sorry, is it just my impression, or are there more Muslims in Spain? Every time I pick up my daughter from school, I see more women with their hair covered and skirts down to their heels. Next year, instead of English, we’ll have to teach Arabic."

Karla Sofia Gascón has violated the Academy’s Oscar rules by accusing nominee Fernanda Torres’ team of spreading hate against her and the cast of Emilia Perez during a Brazilian interview. “Any public communication by anyone associated with an eligible film attempting to cast negative on a competing film will not be tolerated”, as stated on the Academy’s website.
