I was out surveying farmland birds last night when I heard a familiar sound from a nearby Barn. This is the first time this nest box has been used in the 4 years it has been up. The rest of the night was good but seeing these little beauties was exceptional.

There are 5 species of owl in the UK. Yesterday we ringed them all in one incredible session on the Salisbury Plain. We ringed 3 Short Eared Owls, 2 Long Eared Owls, 1 Barn Owl, 1 Tawny Owl & 1 Little Owl. We also retrapped 3 Barn Owls ringed as nestlings = great survival data.

I am very proud of the farmer at todays site. 5 years ago there was one pair of Yellowhammers at this site and the hedgerow was a metre high and see-through and the grass was like a bowling green. I gave them some advice. They now have 6 pairs of Yellowhammers and a superb hedge!

Thats it! The end of another mammoth Tree Sparrow nesting season. 1318 Tree Sparrows have fledged from our nest boxes this year, at an average of 8.5 young per pair which is slightly above average. Let's hope they winter well and we get more pairs next season.

This female Barn Owl has five chicks. We ringed her as one of a brood of five in a box 3km away in 2014. Her parents raised two broods of five that year. She has raised young every year and is obviously passing on good genes to her offspring. Long may she continue to do so!

Amidst all of my other varied posts I hope folk remember that my core voluntary work is dedicated to trying to save Tree Sparrows. 20 years in I still think some broods look stunning. Worth saving aren't they!

Hi folks I havent posted for a bit. Last week I was rushed to hospital and it transpired my appendix had burst a week before and it had turned gangrenous. I was extremely lucky to have made it to the operation and lucky to have got through it. Its been a horrible, rough week.

Spectacular morning in the Thames Valley. We ringed 200 birds of 14 species & processed 35 recaptures. First bird of the day was the first Short-eared Owl for the farm. We ringed 80 Yellowhammers and there were c300 present. The oldest bird of the session was a 6 year old Dunnock

Huge push of migrants through the Salisbury Plain yesterday. We ringed 394 birds of 18 species including 239 Blackcaps, 51 Meadow Pipits, 42 Chiffchaffs, 12 Grasshopper Warblers, 3 Whinchats, this lovely Kestrel and the subtle beauty that is a Garden Warbler.

The night that we ring the first Tree Sparrow broods of the year is always momentous. Tonight was a good start to the season with 13 ringed from 4 broods.

Incredible BTO Constant Effort Site session at Swindon STW. We caught 3 Kingfishers together in one net. Later we caught 2 more. 5 Kingfishers ringed in one session is amazing and a record for us. They were all juveniles so the local pair have obviously bred very successfully.

I ringed this Blue Tit with a deformed bill this morning. It is an adult and it weighed 11.4 grammes which is a very healthy weight. So it is faring well despite its deformity.

Yesterday I ringed a Ruby Throated Hummingbird, supervised by one of the worlds most experienced hummingbird ringers. The ring used is the smallest bird ring in the world at 1.4mm. it weighed 3.4g, mad to think it's about to migrate to North America.

Two Short Eared Owls ringed on a farm in Wilts this evening. They are not being seen by day, suggesting that night time hunting is good enough.

Tree Sparrow first broods in Wiltshire finished today. 340 young fledged from 109 pairs. This is about 30% of the population of southern England. Every one is critical so we feed through the summer to try to increase the survival rate.

I have just got back home after 4.5 hours of feeding farmland birds in foul weather. The hungry gap is biting now and birds are ravenous. All sites were empty after 4 days, I fed 300kg tonight at 9 sites but I will need to repeat this every 4-5 days until late April.

A combination of prolonged miserable wet weather, and Tree Sparrows seemingly declining again this winter, has really got me down recently. I will not give up on trying to save Tree Sparrows. Maybe not spectacular enough to get on TV programmes, but I LOVE their chattering.

Great day today! 80+ Tree Sparrows on site. We monitor them for the @_BTO Retrap Adults for Survival Scheme. We ringed 8, but better than that, retrapped these that we ringed as nestlings in our boxes: 2022 - 15 2021 - 7 2020 - 3 2019 - 1 2018 - 1 Superb data giving us hope🤞.

We have just received news of a great recovery. It is the first Robin ringed in the UK to be recorded in Lithuania. We know continental Robins come to the UK to winter and this one was wintering on the Marlborough Downs in Wiltshire and was ringed whilst monitoring Tree Sparrows.

This brood of Tree Sparrows is the last first brood ringed this year. This is a week earlier than normal. We have ringed 480 nestlings at 3.4 fledged per pair which is higher than average. Now onto second broods which will dictate whether it ends up as a good year or not🙏.

It's taken 27 years but I have finally managed to photograph Jack Snipe on the ground at Swindon STW. There were 3 present and the really great thing is that they (along with 34 Snipe) were on an area that we have managed especially for them.

When I joined Twitter my aim was to share everything that I do. I did bird surveys and led guided walks to raise the funds for this latest seed delivery to feed Tree Sparrows. Feeding Tree Sparrows in the breeding season increases breeding success.

The tenacity of Tree Sparrows never fails to amaze me. The pair in Box 290 have laid their 4th clutch of the year after 3 successful broods. In reality they are too late in the season, and they will likely fail, but full marks for trying. This is why I keep trying to save them.
