Finally, some more snow on Swiss #glaciers! π Mainly the South East has received up to 1m these last days. In general, the snow situation is still below the average for the season though. Results based on our real-time cams combined with modelling @VAW_glaciology @glamos_ch

Winter days on a Swiss mountain #glacier are so short. Our measurement site on Griesgletscher just gets 2 hours of sun after the shadow has moved away. Very lonely and cold at this time of the year. But beautiful! @glamos_ch @VAW_glaciology

Serene evening light at Great Aletsch Glacier. Still very little snow on the lower part of the #glacier, barely covering the surface roughness of the bare ice. Glaciers (and me) would wish for some more π

How are Swiss #glaciers doing right now? Two months into the new glacier year, there's still little snow on the ice, especially below 2800 masl (only 30-70cm, as reported by our real-time stations). The situation is not very unusual though. @glamos_ch @VAW_glaciology

Yeah, our #backyardglacier is back!! π€© Earlier than ever, thanks to abundant snow fall in the Swiss plateau. Some more hard work ahead, as it turns (too) warm already again. We're ready for detailed daily monitoring over the next months π

What a beautiful early-winter morning on Swiss #glaciers! After an exceptionally long period with very high temperatures for the season and a lot of sunshine, some fresh snow has finally arrived. But still, much less snow than usual. @VAW_glaciology @glamos_ch

Strange start into the new season for Swiss #glaciers: snow in September but now sunny, warm and dry for weeks. Bare ice in the ablation area below ca. 2800masl and (limited) melt ongoing. Unusual. Our webcams would be ready to monitor winter snow π @VAW_glaciology @glamos_ch

It should be snowing rather than raining on #glaciers in late October... (!) Well, that's the "white beauty" of Griesgletscher right now. Not-so-nice final visit this morning for some last installations before winter.

@subfossilguy @climafluttuante Oh yes, thanks for spotting. The text was wrong. The most negative August ever happened in 2024, but August 2024 was not the most negative month ever... Sorry, guys π
