My little girl has gone. She rescued me in Australia and followed me back home to London. She's cared for me for 15 years and tonight I held her as she took her last breath. My little girl. I love you.
A sorry figure of a man. I'm at my heaviest I've ever been and it's time to fight that again. The last time I did this I lost eight stone, so twitter, do your thing again and hold me to account. Fitness is more important to me than weight loss, but 50kg has to go to start with.
A little news. I've had a bit of a health scare. It's been going on for about a year and I'd worked myself up into a place where I thought it was something very serious. I avoided the doctors. I've finally been to to doctors and after testing over the last few weeks it turns out
I find it very interesting that tweets that knock other Christians down get 100s of likes, where tweets that build each other up are rather less popular. I wonder where the enemy is working here? Work to build up the body of Christ, not knock it down. We can do better.
Loosing weight has been really hard. But as my body shape changes & the weight does come off the benefits are huge. I did 8 hours of riding yesterday with no physical ill effects. I’ve just bought a new bike jacket off the peg. I’ve not done that for years. Trying not to cry TBH.
We have announced today that I have been appointed Vicar of Bovey Tracey St John with Heathfield, & Team Vicar in the Newton Abbot Team Ministry with special responsibility for the parish of St Luke, Milber in the
@CofEDevon
Today is a dark day. I don't have very many of them, they tend to knock me sideways. I cry too easily, I argue & poke & pour negativity outwards. I don't want to go to Morning Prayer, I don't want to say Mass; which is good indication of where these feelings come from. So I go.
Pondering aloud. So, what if the Church Of England opened a Funeral Directors. Offering very low cost funerals and taking on what used to be called paupers funerals. Removing faceless councils and inhuman treatment of those most in need at desperate times of grief.
That’s it folks. The pilgrimage is a full go go go.
@FatherSJMC
and I have finally made it - it’s been a day of battle after battle to get here - but here we are!
To the junior person
@churchofengland
who made this error. Don’t worry about it. We all make mistakes. When I was a junior person at the BBC I once took BBC TV schedules off air and also disconnected a live feed from a stadium as Wolves were about to score. These things happen.
I’ve been looking at the 24-hr delay in clergy payday. Basically an error by junior person (all my sympathy!) spotted too late. Systems are going to be reviewed. Payments will be received tomorrow
Walking back from All Saints after midday mass a large 4x4 with blacked out windows pulls up alongside me. Windows roll down. Two very large armed policemen then enthuse about
#AVicarsLife
with me for 5 mins. It really is a documentary that is reaching places others don’t!
We've just said goodbye to Sophie. 14 years old. Our beautiful, loving, Lady Sophie of Forty Green. A good life, a long life, a loving life. I held her and we cried with her as she went. Losing Abby and Sophie so close has nearly finished us. They're playing together now.
It’s in
@Telegraph
so it must be official. I’m to be made Vicar
@AnselmHayes
a little later this year. Please do pray for us and for the parish that we continue to see growth in both numbers and love of Jesus and one another.
Introducing the newest member of our family - this is Ginge (we didn't name him, don't @ me). He's come to live with us as his current dad is moving and can't keep him anymore. He's very big, very cuddly, very loud. He's going to fit in just perfectly.
Well, that's it - I'm in! What a fabulous evening at St. Luke's in Milber and with the fine people of St. John's, Bovey Tracey as I was Licensed and Instituted as Vicar in both parishes. As +Paul said, ‘The time of timidity, the age of reticence in the church is over. What we
Sadly over the last few months I've received some not very pleasant letters and emails etc. I've just sat and printed them, then shredded them, then deleted them. It's deeply therapeutic! I've prayed for each person who wrote each letter and will continue to do so this week.
As I come to the end of my curacy I’ve been trying to sit and write, trying to find the essence of what the last six years of training has been about. So far, all I seem to be able to manage is ‘There have been less murders for me to solve at country houses than expected’.
Exciting new purchase for
@AnselmHayes
on our way back from Wales. This will allow us to push further out into the parish to events and the new housing estates. Look out Hayes!
Some amazing news! It was announced this morning that we are off to
@dioceseoflondon
to become part of the life and worship of
@mary_kenton
A huge next step in my curacy training
@churchofengland
and an exciting return to the capital for
@catcashmore
, Edmund and I. We can't wait!
My little man has broken his finger and is heading into his second day in hospital as they attempt to reset it. There’s a not insignificant chance they’ll have to operate - I’m in Rome and struggling.
@catcashmore
is super mummy. If you could shoot up a prayer i’d be grateful.
Kid (maybe 13) just stopped me in the barbers to say ‘saw you on
#AVicarsLife
- you made me want to go to church - so I’ve started going - thank you’. Just wow. How amazing is the Grace of God?
I think, on the whole, it would be fab if the
@churchofengland
Twitter account pointed to a different church each week for their usual service, rather than a specially crafted national service. Really show the breadth of the CofE at parish level.
I'm pleased to announce a new TV show. A Vicars Study. Each week Vicars reveal what's in their Zoom backgrounds. The first episode stars
@FatherSJMC
who has had to come clean about his Fr. Matthew life size cut out.
Prayer is prayer. It doesn’t matter if you kneel, hold you hands open or closed, colour in, sing, shout, scream or are silent. All that matters is that you reach for God and seek Him out. NEVER criticise the way somebody chooses to pray. Ever.
#pray
It’s finally happened and I’ve tested positive for COVID alongside Catherine and Edmund. We don’t have symptoms (thank you jabs!) but are isolating. So today, I join with many others watching mass online. Please do pray for us and for all isolating and removed from communion.
Many of you will know that I give out rosaries to anyone who asks me for prayer on the street. I've given away over 200 this year & I'm constantly on the look out for cheap rosaries to give away - so a BRILLIANT friend has bought me a box of 400 from Jerusalem.

This statue of Our Lady & Jesus at
@Buckfast_Abbey
has been stuck in my head all day. Her joy, His smile. It draws you into their relationship & their love & for a moment shines a light on the kind of love we Christians should have for each other. That’s the tweet. 🙏❤️
We started with a photo of us at The Pantheon, we finish our pilgrimage with a photo outside the Trinità dei Monti looking out over Rome. It has been an amazing pilgrimage of prayer, friendship, discovery and love. 🙏
A long and joyful journey. But this is not the end of that journey, it’s not even the beginning of the end, but it may just be the end of the beginning. Pray for me.
I briefly protected my tweets this week in the face of harassment from a very small number of people. I've decided this morning to be who and what God has called me to be. With God on my side...
#hailmary
I'll be ordained Priest on the 30th June this year. Please pray for me, my family & friends,
@robnorthherefor
&
@RuthHulse
and the people of the West Hereford Team where I continue to serve as Assistant Curate. My first Mass will be on 1st July at St. Nicholas - 10:30am.
It’s the first anniversary of ordination to the Priesthood today. A very special day indeed. I decided a little present to say thank you for a year of service was in order... so bought myself this... she’s a real beauty and I had a brilliant bargain.
For the last month we've been praying for Julie and her two daughters. Julie and baby were in hospital and things were very touch and go. But with a month of desperate prayer we have our Churchwarden back at home and Lillie-Ann with her sister. God is Good.
Last episode of
#avicarslife
tonight. It’s been an awesome ride, so many people saying hello, talking about their faith, talking about coming back to faith or finding it for the first time.
#godisgood
I will be at the pantomime this evening... a little different obvs ;)
A new joy in the parish as we welcome our newest member. She’s being baptised on Easter Sunday and will be Godchild 12. Nothing brings me more happiness than baptising. She’s a miracle, as each and every one of us is.
After 11 months of support and hard work a person who found themselves on the streets 3 years ago - today - finds themselves moving into their own flat. A huge step towards a stable life. Please pray and give thanks for everyone involved.
11 years ago today
@catcashmore
and I celebrated 10 years of marriage and re-affirmed our marriage vows. It was very special and a certain Master Edmund was in very early attendance ❤️🙏 Love you both to the end of the universe and back again.
I found myself in central london after a rather tough morning yesterday. As I walked past a restaurant a waiter smiled at me & I was pulled in. I sat in the window and wine was offered. I ate a lovely lunch. I stopped, watched, listened & just let the noise of the world heal me.
A very happy new year from all of us here in the Cashmore household. Here's to a good 2022; for a restful peace that brings with it more love, grace and hope.
Just found out that
#AVicarsLife
won the
@RadioTimes
readers choice award
@sandfordawards
We are overjoyed and hugely excited for
@JamieRouth
and his team that their dedication and awesomely hard work has resulted in this. Thank you everyone who voted!
I am a ludicrously lucky husband.
@catcashmore
and I have managed this marriage lark for 19 years today. She's kind, intelligent, strong, caring, an amazing mother and an awesome wife. She puts up with a great deal from me and I thank God for her each and every day. ❤️🙏❤️
20 years ago today
@catcashmore
and I got married in St. Patrick’s, Newport. It’s been an amazing journey and I can never quite believe how lucky I’ve been and am. Blessed doesn’t even begin to cover it. Thank you for everything boo ❤️
The fireworks have been going for five hours straight. Like a constant finale of bonfire night. Five hours. Sophie is shaking, drooling and now crying. I’m not far behind her at this point.
It’s been a spectacular day and there will be more photos later, but the highlight has got to be playing football with
@FatherSJMC
& the kids at Jeel Al Amal boys home and school in Palestine this afternoon. Awesome place doing awesome work.
17 years ago today I married the most amazing, beautiful, intelligent, loving, generous person in the world. She’s still my best friend and partner in crime, I wouldn’t be me with her. Here’s to growing old(er) together.
12.6 Million people tuned into the provider of our live church streaming on Sunday. 12.6m. Let that sink in. They only stream church services. 12.6m. The usual attendance at church on a Sunday is about 2/3m. 12.6m. So before you stop live-streaming your services think about that.
Day three (of five). Transition day. Travelling to Devon as the lorries are finished in Hayes. I’ve had no choice but to eat breakfast in a roadside cafe. One must face hardship with grace.
The day starts here in Jerusalem with a view of the walls of the Old City. Today we head to the Mount of Olives. Those who have asked for prayers I will hold you here today.
Am I alone in thinking twitter is rather lovely at the moment? A little quieter, a little less shrill. I notice we're still up and running, I thought it was going to break by now? I see lots of bots have been blasted, I'm seeing people on my timeline I've not seen for ages. Bliss
In rather wonderful news, I've arrived home after EP to discover that due to an admin error an extra box of wine from the merchants has arrived... they do not want it back... just one little glass I think.
One of the best bits of the trip so far has been making new friends. I’m sure many of you know Tom, he’s not a new friend (we can’t stand him) but he keeps tagging along with us so I thought I should post something nice.
Miracles don't happen you say? This evening our Church Warden has escaped a huge car fire when his door was unlocked - all the other doors locked in the fire. The fire bridgade told him if it hadn't been open he would have died. The car burnt up in 1.5 minutes.
#PraiseGod
!
Well that’s it for me folks. You won’t see me in next weeks episode and I’ll not be live tweeting as I’m away to watch my Rector in the local pantomime! It’s been a blessing and a gift to spend time with you all on these Friday evenings. God bless.
#AVicarsLife
Another day, another test. At what point should I be worried about the sheer amount of plastic I put in the bin each morning from these? The greater good demands I take them everyday at present, the Greater Good wonders what I'm doing the oceans.
Praying for
@theresa_may
this morning. I can't begin to imagine the pressure she is under - and whatever else we project onto your politicians we must never, ever, forget that they are - like us - broken, damaged and hurt people. Lord, have mercy.
From a previous life. Just found an envelope with 'Matthew' written on the front in my grandmother's writing. I don't know where it came from... but wow. First photo is me and Aunty Jo just as I was heading off to train as a nurse and the second photo is me at 10... not Edmund(!)
A rather fabulous day. 10 miles walked, many prayers offered. Much healing and lots of fun and laughter along the way.
@FatherSJMC
and I make a good pilgrimage team. Next time, perhaps we should invite a larger gang.
It's International Nurses Day tomorrow and we'll be giving thanks - alongside
@bishopSarahM
for the dedication, love and devotion to care our nurses have. I trained as a nurse, it seems like only yesterday - but was 20 years ago. I've missed it every day.

What. A. Night. I'm in seventh heaven. Over 70 bikers with us this evening and over 50 motorbikes in church. Blessings in abundance, smiles beyond counting, joy knowing no bounds.
