Am glad to share the news that my second book will be forthcoming on 3 August 2023 from
@FaberBooks
🧡 Bright Fear was written during a time of grief both personal & collective; thank you to the poets whose words have kept - and continue to keep - me afloat during difficult times.
@Dr2NisreenAlwan
All children in Hong Kong wear medical masks, even those in kindergarten. It doesn't affect their learning, keeps them safe and allows them to attend school. I really don't understand this anti-mask ideology that is so rampant in the UK, even as a deadly new variant is spreading.
Am grateful to be shortlisted for this year’s
@ForwardPrizes
in the Best Single Poem category ✨ Thanks to the judges for their support, and congratulations to all the other shortlisted poets!
After reading 163 novels over 7 months, we arrived at this longlist for the 2023 Booker Prize. Am proud of these 13 novels - we hope you'll enjoy them too✨

Watching research being done now in the UK on aerosol transmission of COVID is a bit strange because this kind of research has already been done in many Asian countries. It seems the UK just can’t learn from other countries (especially if they’re not Western) & copy what works.

Thanks to everyone who's helped celebrate the launch of 100 Queer Poems! Just a personal note to say that each supportive message still means so much to me as someone who struggles with queer shame. Poetry has helped me over the years; I hope our book will do the same for others.
That HK has pursued a zero covid policy means countless families aren’t mourning dead relatives & nursing those with long covid, unlike how it’s being portrayed by those in favor of letting the virus rip. HK has had 213 deaths. The UK death rate remains over 300 hundred per day.
Again, it frustrates me that COVID research has to be done in the US or UK to be taken seriously. We’ve known that children can spread SARS since 2003; likewise, they can spread COVID. That’s why places like Singapore & HK make sure children wear masks so they can’t infect others
This study from India reports evidence of transmission in children. Also evidence that some people infect a lot of others and some none. We need more research to identify who’s likely to be a ‘superspreader’ for more effective & targeted prevention.
Reading Mary Oliver's poems in my early twenties changed me. She wrote about "the difference between doing nothing, or doing a little, and the redemptive act of true effort". Her words made me realise that I could - in spite of queer shame - carve out a "wild and precious life."
I grew up during the SARS epidemic when it hit Hong Kong in 2003; I was 16 years old at the time. What the city learnt from SARS has certainly refined and informed HK's current response to COVID-19. It is clear that schools & universities should be shut, that healthy folks should

So grateful to be placed Second in this year's National Poetry Competition! It's a poem that was difficult to write, and one that I never thought I'd share, so to have it so lovingly received meant the world. Thank you to
@AndrewPoetry
in particular for those generous comments 💜
Hong Kong never abandoned the policy of containing the virus and has aggressively tested, implemented contact tracing and quarantines to keep imported cases low. After 4+ months HK is easing social distancing (but everyone wears medical face masks, even outdoors). Total deaths: 4
Am excited to be judging the 2019 New Poets Prize for a short pamphlet by poets aged 17-24 (inclusive). Details below. Please share widely if you know of/work with any poets within this age group! ✨

Hong Kong only reported one new case today (it’s a city of approx 7.4+ million). Widespread testing and contacting tracing and face masks have certainly helped.
Thinking about schools opening in January 2021 and how that will lead to more people getting the new variant of COVID. Schools in England STILL don't require face masks.
Places where even *primary* school kids wear face masks: Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan...
Thank you for your kind words of support, it truly means a lot! Thought to share this perceptive and generous review of Flèche by May Huang, just published
@hkreviewofbooks
: 💫 It's been such a gift to have Flèche received like this by poets and critics 💙
My dad, a doctor in Hong Kong, warned me about airborne transmission months ago. Hence the importance of face masks within *any* indoor space / enclosed environment, not just on public transport. Face masks also help prevent transmission in cases where people are asymptomatic 😷
voluntarily stay at home whenever possible. It's not about herd immunity, but about the healthy protecting the sick & those who are vulnerable. The UK's approach has been horrifying & disheartening; something needs to change, & fast. Thought to share this:
A primary school teacher of mine in Hong Kong inspired me to work hard on my English. She was the reason I fell in love with reading & writing at the age of 11. We hadn't met in 17 years. Today, we met for lunch & I gave her a copy of my pamphlet & said thank you ✨
#synchronicity
"Living with the virus" is NOT something I've ever heard discussed overseas. It's just not even within the realm of legitimate public health discussion. What folks in Hong Kong are discussing is the need to wear TWO masks due to the new variants. Total deaths since Jan 2020 = 197
There’s a narrative painting scientists as part of a spectrum with those calling for suppression & elimination on the extreme end of that. That’s not true. Look outside the bubble of the *few* countries promoting “living with the virus”. You’ll actually see they’re the minority.
Hotel quarantine in Hong Kong: have received multiple calls to check I'm in my room from the Health Dep, have a bluetooth enabled wristband I have to wear for 21 days, have 5 tests (1 saliva and 3 PCRs) and one after I leave quarantine. HK has zero COVID cases. I can see why now.

What is it with the UK and its holidays? First it was "saving Christmas". Now it's ensuring we get a "summer holiday". People in places like HK, Singapore, Australia etc. aren't focused on holidays; they've got their normal lives back. This is even before vaccination has started.
I found today’s news of a lecturer from China (who works at the Uni of Southampton) being beaten up while jogging near his home to be very triggering. I remember being so anxious when I had to commute to work in Mar 2020 that I kept my work badge on & hoped it would keep me safe.

Dylan Thomas Prize longlist.
What a depth of incredible global talent! 😮

PRESS RELEASE 📰:
Just when one thinks things are already bleak enough here, turns out that critical race theory is now opposed by the UK government. While universities and so many organisations have taken steps to work on anti-racism policies, the gov denies the existence of white privilege... 😨
“This government stands unequivocally against Critical Race Theory”. 😳
It’s not just Trump: the Tories are every bit as extreme in their attacks on legitimate and profoundly important academic work. I really am a bit speechless...
#CriticalRaceTheory
The UK response to COVID has been shambolic. No masks in schools. No mass testing. No enforcement for self-isolation. Deaths are rising rapidly again to hundreds per day. Daily cases are over 20000. The negligence is truly shocking & it’s not even winter yet, with Brexit looming.
We are delighted to announce that
@Brrnrrd
Jay Bernard (whose debut collection will be published in 2019 with
@ChattoBooks
) will be joining us as a co-editor of
@oxfordpoetry
as of Feb 2018! Here's a preview of this issue's cover art, created by Jay, on the theme of 'crossings'!
The fact that schools are currently open without masks is shocking. In East Asia, this would be utterly unfathomable. You don’t need “bubbles” or circles on the floor. When I went through SARS as a 13 yr old, it was simple: masks on at all times except for lunch & hand sanitisers
Kids now not a priority for testing in UK while no one is arguing anymore that they can indeed transmit virus to adults. All those promises about effective testing in schools a couple of wks ago evaporated. 50K cases/day expected by Oct with estimates of at least 10%
#LongCovid
Taiwan has gone for over 200 days without a single COVID case; cases are nearly non-existent in HK. That's thanks to strict border controls, universal masking, mass testing & strict quarantine rules as well as clear govt public health messaging. England has had none of the above.
One word to describe pandemic response in countries with high CV19 transmission is being LATE with all interventions: lockdown, testing, masks, borders, ventilation. Inevitable solutions but denied &hence made less effective. Most were known to us from the start. I still ask why?
Am thinking about how all Hong Kong residents are now eligible for a face mask each that can be safely re-used & washed up to 60 times. 7.5 million people will receive this for free. HK has had 4 deaths in total. Meanwhile, in the UK...
First proper day outside after the end of my 21 day hotel quarantine and I'm already so impressed and touched by the diligence of HK people in terms of their mask-wearing. It's over 30 degrees and the humidity is utterly overwhelming, but everyone (even kids) are wearing masks 👏
Anti-East / Southeast Asian hate crimes are up by nearly 300% since the start of the pandemic in the UK. It’s real and takes a huge physical & mental toll on us. Let’s not just think it’s an issue in the US, it’s happening in the UK too.
Six years ago today, Adrienne Rich passed away. She was the reason I began to write poetry. Her "Dream of a Common Language" made me change my life. Looking forward to commemorating Adrienne's legacy as a radical feminist, lesbian poet & essayist this April with
@PoetintheCityUK
In HK, mask-wearing is compulsory. You wear it till you eat at a restaurant & put it on the instant you leave the table. You wear it even when (especially when!) you're speaking at an event. You wear it at school, in the street, even in the gym. Total deaths since Jan 2020: 213.

for giving me the space to ponder something I've been thinking about now for quite sometime - my relationship to Chinese & English as a bi-lingual poet from Hong Kong who writes solely in English:
This 2nd wave was inevitable due to failed government messaging & confusing policies that make no sense (no masks in schools, "eat out to help out", pubs opening, encouraging holidays abroad without quarantines being enforced, opening universities while cases are on the rise...)
We're thrilled to commission new work from NATALIE DIAZ. Radixes and Formations is a series of poetic sensualities exploring the words ‘origin’, ‘migration’, ‘freedom’ & ‘love’. Natalie will perform the poems & discuss them with Mary Jean Chan 22-29 April.

London's been put under Tier 2 restrictions, meaning different households can't mix indoors. What baffles me is how schools are still open without masks - neither teachers nor students seem to be wearing them. Isn't that the perfect example of different households mixing indoors?

That millions of Americans are prepared to vote for a man who is responsible for countless COVID deaths & doesn’t believe climate change exists & is a vile human being in all senses of the word is truly shocking. & now he wants to insinuate that there is fraud when there is none.
Excited to have a long poem in the summer issue of The Poetry Review, alongside many favourite names! It's another of my fencing poems - thanks to
@no1_emily
for giving it a lovely home :)
Was just interviewed by a group of students from my former secondary school in Hong Kong. Every single student wore a medical mask, and the teacher supervising them had one on too. This is how you re-open schools. Masks are crucial. 😷
Total no. of deaths in HK as of June 2020: 4
In England, I frequently feel gaslit in terms of covid, as masks don’t seem to exist anymore. In Paris, people wear them diligently on public transport, and that just feels responsible, respectful and safe. Covid isn’t over, and long Covid exists. Let’s protect each other better.
As a young person, I want to remain vigilant not just so that I don’t get the virus, but also so I don’t spread it to others. Younger folks need to take this more seriously so we don’t spark a second wave of COVID-19 as cases begin to rise across the UK

Thanks so much for all your support with the launch of Flèche yesterday! Am really looking forward to the book launch tonight at the LRB at 7pm (there are still a few tickets left for those of you who might want to show up at the door). See you there! 🍰✨
COVID messaging in England has been so confusing that had I not already known what to do (wear a mask, social distance, ventilate indoor spaces since the virus is airborne - 2m is arbitrary) based on having experienced SARS in HK, I would have lost track of what I should be doing
Most people won't wear a mask unless it is mandated. But masks have been proven to save lives - it's why doctors use them. Schools can only open safely if teachers, students & staff wear them. Universities are already proceeding in the right direction; schools must do the same 😷
@chenchenwrites
@JayGYing
We also got a question/comment from someone else about why we have to keep critiquing colonialism, since isn’t so bad after all, and that it just meant learning other people’s customs (conflating it with cultural assimilation, among other things)... 😯
It’s very interesting that despite the UK being a democratic country, it can’t be held accountable for the soaring death rates & it’s lack of testing & lack of contact tracing. Scientists have been pressuring the government to do the right thing since mid-March, but to no avail.
There is a new variant of COVID in the UK. The R rate is between 1.1-1.2. Waves of national lockdown were not inevitable if not for the grossly inadequate guidance on masks, testing & quarantining. Johnson's leadership has been shambolic. Now Tier 4 is being announced for the SE.
