Quite remarkable that I’ve been taken to task by
@BrumLabour
Chief Whip for tweeting my opposition to the closure of
#Harborne
Library and challenging the highly flawed consultation process. Apparently I can’t now speak without authorisation - a damaging culture of control.
Just received an email from the
@BrumLabour
Chief Whip
@Raymondg1969
telling councillors that we now can’t speak to the media without his permission. The entire social fabric of the city is under threat, yet our leadership believe it’s acceptable to silence local representatives
Much of
@BhamCityCouncil
problems relate to poor governance and poor political oversight by the City leadership. Attempts to silence backbench
@BrumLabour
councillors is entirely the wrong approach and suggests lessons have not been learned.
@UKLabour
Learned today that I’ve been “administratively suspended” by
@UKLabour
and
@BrumLabour
allegedly for social media posts “which may bring the party into disrepute” To be clear, I’ll continue to campaign against cuts which will damage the life chances of many people if implemented
Harborne Library is one of the best used in the city, a valuable resource for four of our local primary schools and a great asset right in the middle of our local centre.
@BhamCityCouncil
proposal to downgrade it to a part-time library in a “co-location” is a poor substitute
This guy, now the biggest (slum) landlord in the House of Commons, introduced a licensing scheme when he was a council leader which he ignored himself.
@UKLabour
needs to crack down on this behaviour by its MPs and councillors- and fast!
@BrumLeader
Libraries can really enhance the life chances of young people. The proposals are about managed decline of the library service, will inevitably lead to further cuts and closures and should be resisted. Go along to the consultation meetings, but also lobby your MP and councillors.
🗣️ We are currently consulting on future options to delivery library services. Have your say.
Take part in the survey and join one of our in-person consultations.
Srebrenica Memorial Day: this afternoon Birmingham City Councillors will be remembering the victims of the 1995 genocide, and pledging to combat hatred and intolerance
A poorly run consultation, and proposals which will lead to managed decline for the service across our city. Community libraries help improve the life chances of our young people, and it’s time for our elected representatives to speak out in support.
@RichParkerLab
@PreetKGillMP
@ERCOBham
Thanks. I intend to do so. Many of
@BhamCityCouncil
problems have been caused by poor political oversight and lack of scrutiny of the Executive. not by backbenchers questioning poor decisions
@BrumLabour
This kind of crude political manoeuvring should have no place in our public affairs. This is not the normal ‘ rough and tumble’ of political life. It’s the deliberate undermining of our own institutions of local self-government and is beyond unacceptable
Today, I and my fellow West Midlands Council Leaders and Portfolio Holders have written to Andy Street to publicly declare our loss of confidence in his ability to lead our region.
We need a Mayor that will stand up for local authorities, not undermine us for political gain.
Are our other Birmingham MPs planning to follow the lead given by
@larry_turner
in seeking help for our city? Whatever the cause of the crisis, the cuts being implemented by
@BhamCityCouncil
will devastate the lives of many residents.
@AlistairCarns
There’s no room for complacency from senior
@UKLabour
politicians regarding the crisis at
@BhamCityCouncil
The cuts will undermine the health and wellbeing of many across the city, and politicians need to speak up and put Birmingham’s case directly to government
“I think there is an opportunity to review the current approach the commissioners are taking”
West Mids Mayor
@RichParkerLab
reacts to calls from campaigners for “bankrupt”
@BhamCityCouncil
to be bailed out by the government
#PoliticsMidlands
Quite incredible that
@WMPolice
has put
#harborne
police station up for sale without any apparent consultation with the local community or elected representatives as to how policing will be delivered locally or where the
@HarborneWMP
team will be based.
Phenomenal collection in Harborne yesterday with over 60 crates of food and toiletries collected for Quinton Foodbank. Thanks to Harborne residents for your generous support, to all our volunteers who worked so hard, and to
@Waitrose
Harborne for supporting our collection.
Proud to be at launch of
@BrumLabour
Manifesto with
@Harborne_Jayne
. Key cycling commitments include two new cycle ‘superhighways,’ segregated cycle routes on main commuter corridors and continuing
@WMCycleHire
scheme. We’ll give every child in the city access to cycling!
Political & institutional leaders need to take ownership / responsibility for delivering solutions. Otherwise declaring a ‘Road Safety Emergency’ will prove to be little more than the grand gesture that
@BhamCityCouncil
‘Climate Emergency’ has sadly proved to be.
@BrumLeader
I do think that
@UKLabour
and other parties should have rules preventing elected representatives holding ‘dual mandates’ - the potential for conflict of interests is always there. In any case given the problems facing
@BhamCityCouncil
its political leadership should be full-time
I’m delighted to have
@Ms_SThompson
join me as Deputy Mayor.
She shares my vision of giving young people in the West Midlands the best start in life.
It was great to introduce her to the team and some of our brilliant interns working at Summer Lane.
I look forward to working
Proud to be part of an all-party initiative at next week’s Birmingham City Council meeting, when we will remembering the victims of the

Birmingham Edgbaston CLP passed motion last welcoming party’s adoption of IHRA definition of anti- Semitism and calling on party to take zero-tolerance approach to perpetrators

Really insulting to see this when local councillors are being inundated with complaints about missed collections week after week. Also horrified that you’re asking residents to place the bins in this way - you’d have to stand in the road to do that.
@BhamCityCouncil
@BrumLeader
🗑️ Reminder for this week! 🗑️ Make sure your bins are out early in the morning on your collection day to ensure a smooth collection.
Place bins at the curb with the handles facing the road. Together, we can make a big difference! 💪🌍

Important that as Birmingham City Councillors and ‘corporate parents’ that we understand the conclusions of Cass Review. Never again must evidence-based medicine give way to ideology and the consequent damage to vulnerable young people.

@AlistairCarns
More cuts on the way for Birmingham residents following failures in this project costing £320M. Some humility wouldn’t go amiss, not arrogant statements about how “this deal will now deliver better housing choices for local people”
Sad to hear of the death of Tim Brighouse, an inspirational educationalist who worked to improve the life opportunities of many thousands of Birmingham young people

Over 120 residents turned out last night to a meeting to save

Library. Young and old spoke passionately about a service that’s at the heart of our community.
@BhamCityCouncil
Libraries Consultation must properly reflect community value.
@BrumLeader
@Cllr_suleman
Not convinced that this consultation is in good faith. Limited options presented, with respondents being channelled in a particular direction. As the consultation runs until 17 July it makes sense for people to delay responding so that we can have a wider debate
@BhamCityCouncil
Our youngsters know how precious our library service is. Let’s not let them down. Attend the public consultations - Harborne library’s is on 24 September, (10.30 - 12.00) snd reject
@BhamCityCouncil
proposals which will close Harborne and other libraries.
@PreetKGillMP
There does absolutely need to be an independent inquiry, but what happens in the meantime to protect our public services? It’s time that Birmingham MPs came together to press the government for exceptional support to prevent the whole social fabric of our city being destroyed.
Great to meet
@Vanessa010816
at
@welshhousefarm
childrens' Community Cycling event today. Plenty of young cyclists here - now we need to create some safe routes around Harborne and beyond.
Such a shame that
#harborne
residents’ efforts to dispose of litter properly are not being matched by an effort by
@BhamCityCouncil
to empty litter bins frequently. This is a health hazard and we need to do better!
@CllrMajid
@BrumLeader
Not surprising that
@BhamCityCouncil
has one of the worst recycling rates in the country when recycling collections are missed week after week, and residents are forced to put their recycling into the general refuse.
@BrumLeader
@CllrMajid
Great to join local residents and
@welshhousefarm
in litter-pick on footpath between Welsh House Farm and Northfield Rd - a great route through golf course

This really does highlight the inability of
@BhamCityCouncil
to address the damaging culture in the organisation. That and the failure of
@BrumLabour
to address its own culture of bullying and secrecy makes me pessimistic that the City Council can survive in its present form.

The forced displacement of 1.1 million civilians in Gaza is a humanitarian disaster and a crime. Sad to see governments and politicians in the democratic world being complicit in this outrage.

Uncollected refuse/recycling bins strewn across Harborne yet again. This has been going on for weeks now, but with the warmer weather the smell is awful. Don’t know of any other local authority that provides such a poor service

colleagues from
@JaneRockHouse
- we need to respond with honesty and humility if we’re to regain the trust of the people of Birmingham
ICYMI: My long thread about why Brummies need an urgent inquiry, in public, before they bear the consequences of multiple failures and rising demand for services. Story here:
Harborne Day Centre is a lifeline for so many people in my constituency and beyond. That’s why I’m campaigning to save it from being closed.
Today,
@Harborne_Jayne
and I met with Cabinet Member

HARBORNE FOODBANK COLLECTION: we collected 33 crates of food, (574kg) 6 crates of toiletries/nappies and received £113.65 in cash donations today. Thanks as always to local residents for your generous support, and to
@Waitrose
Harborne for making it possible.

@BhamCityCouncil
Many people will spot the irony of a city promoting the
#InvictusGames2027
while cutting services to its most vulnerable disabled citizens
I’ve lived in Harborne for forty years and I’ve never seen the area so neglected. Litter bins unemptied, refuse and recycling left uncollected for weeks and green bins collections missed. The Council’s complaints process is also utterly dysfunctional.
@CllrMajid
@BhamCityCouncil
The usual obstacle course right across Harborne this morning. Difficult for walkers and dangerous for people with buggies, wheelchair users and others. Come on
@BCC_Help
- get it sorted!
@ninser
@Lachlan_Edi
We’ve got to confront ‘no debate’ and other mantras imposed on us by the ideologues. When these are discussed openly, they fall apart.
Concerning that
@BhamCityCouncil
appears to have reneged on its commitment to hold face-to-face consultations for each of the community libraries under threat. Councillors are now being told that the “final phase of consultation” will only be for feedback on the “proposed model”
Today
@AmsterdamNL
Central Station opened a new bike parking facility, which was not built on or underground, but underwater.
As city's largest such facility, the Stationsplein bike garage was built under the Open Havenfront and can store 7,000 bicycles.
@AlexanderJBrock
There needs to be an independent inquiry into
@BhamCityCouncil
with at least an interim report published before the 2026 local elections - Birmingham people have a right to expect this.
@David4BKH
A shame that users have been let down at such short notice. If there were ‘huge issues’ why didn’t
@WestMids_CA
identify them before the pilot started?
Many thanks to the residents of

Very sorry to hear of the death of Hugh McCallion, a long time Birmingham City Councillor, including Housing Committee Chair for many years. A kind and generous person, with a lovely sense of humour.
@BrumLabour
This article illustrates the horrific consequences for service users and their families of the day centre closures. Harborne Day Centre and others provide a lifeline for highly vulnerable people together with much-needed respite for their carers.
Great to have
@brigidjones
and Cllr Michael Edwards (Nottingham) join our local
#Harborne
team today. Strong support from local residents for our
@BrumLabour
policies
I’m one of the councillors who signed the letter to Keir Starmer. Labour needs to speak out unequivocally on the humanitarian catastrophe that’s engulfing the people of Gaza.
@BrumLabour
It was fantastic to see so many faces tonight - and hear so many people passionate about making safe streets in Harborne and Quinton. Thanks to
@samatquinton
and
@martinibrooks
for coming too!
Liz is right. As the majority party our leader is the leader of the City Council. To take away councillors’ rights and responsibilities to elect that person will weaken democratic accountability and must be challenged vigorously.
I oppose NEC's decision to impose leader on Birmingham Labour Group. Labour is a democratic party. As Bham Labour cllrs, we have the right to elect our leader. Anyone who thinks they can do better job than Ian Ward should challenge him in an election, he will stand on his record.
Over the last month Harborne Councillor
@martinibrooks
has supported over 50 young people get out on the road and cycle with Welsh House Farm Community Cycling. We go out again in a few weeks time to Woodgate Valley.
