UPDATE: Media School faculty condemned IU’s response to protests, writing that it has damaged IU’s moral center.
“The administration has crossed a red line by choosing an authoritarian stance that is antithetical to the mission of an institution of higher learning.”
@idsnews
UPDATE: A protester received an IUPD trespass warning banning the student from all IU properties for a year. He was arrested for criminal trespass after protesting in Dunn Meadow today and has been released from jail. It’s not yet clear how many people received this ban
@idsnews
UPDATE: A student protester who was arrested today has been banned from IU Bloomington’s campus for five years according to a photo of the trespass notice.
@idsnews
IU Bloomington Library Faculty overwhelmingly condemned “the use of violence and excessive force” against protesters, called for a lift of campus bans, reversal of the Dunn Meadow policy change and the resignation of the president and provost in a vote yesterday.
@idsnews
UPDATE: In an email to faculty, IU College of Arts and Sciences dean Rick Van Kooten expressed his “profound concern” regarding arrested students and faculty who were banned from campus for criminal trespass, writing that he communicated his concern to IU leadership.
@idsnews
On the eve of the divestment protest, IU changed policy to forbid tents w/out IU approval.
Thursday morning, they posted the change to their website.
That afternoon, police arrested 33 protesters for violating policy.

More on the student who received a 5-year ban from another
@idsnews
reporter: The ban was for a year until he made a joke about a misdated notice given to another protester, so they scratched it out and changed it to a 5-year ban, he said.
Bloomington Faculty Council president elect Danielle DeSawal met with Whitten yesterday with two goals:
1) revoke policy change
2) stop state police from engaging
Neither were accomplished, she said in an email to faculty.
@idsnews
Over 20 protesters have been handcuffed. The police have been dragging people out of tents and pushing against the crowd. One trooper said those arrested were arrested for trespassing
@idsnews
Protesters attempted to get into Bryan Hall to deliver a “resignation letter” for President Whitten to sign. The doors were locked, so they slid copies of the letter through the door.
@idsnews
From IU:
“We encourage affected faculty and students to engage in the appeals process by contacting IUPD. Trespass ban notices will be suspended during the appeals process in nearly all cases. This will allow these students and faculty to complete the semester.”
@idsnews
In the open letter, faculty wrote the response violated 1st Amendment rights, due process, academic freedom and shared governance.
“How can we instill respect for core principles of democratic life when our own administration fails to live up to them?”
Reporting from the passenger seat of a taxi transporting passengers through San Francisco, senior
@marissa_meador
became the eighth IU student to win the national writing championship in 15 years.
The letter asks IU to halt police action, apologize to and reinstate students banned from campus, restore the previous protest policy and calls for the Bloomington Faculty Council to investigate.
“It is critical that we expose the root of this shameful chapter in IU’s history.”
Protesters are shouting “shame” at the police. IUPD has been warning the group of arrests all day, and many who did not want to be arrested have left

“I will also be convening a meeting of the College’s Chairs and Directors for early next week to further discuss this urgent matter impacting our campus,” he wrote.
According to the email, faculty and students can appeal the ban.
Congratulations to Media School student Marissa Meador, who was named a writing finalist to compete in the 64th annual National Writing, Photojournalism, Audio, Television and Multimedia Championships, June 1-7, 2024.
I am so honored to have received this award from

@idsnews
for showing me what great journalism looks like and teaching me almost everything I know. I am constantly in awe of everyone at the IDS.
A little shoutout to my home county for working together to create a newspaper after the old one became a ghost newsroom. Very solid first edition and inspiring example for other small towns :)
The IDS is so important — for the journalists it produces and the news it provides. It is by far my favorite thing about my time at IU. Please read this letter from some of the most talented and hard-working people I know.
FROM THE EDITORS: IU student media is under threat by our own university. If we don’t act now to fight against potential budget cuts, we may not recover. So, on April 25, the IDS will stage a one-day walkout.
The last item passed 73-2 with 7 abstentions.
Reasons given were the president and provost’s “encroachment on the right to free speech; their undermining of peaceful protest; their endangerment of students, staff and faculty; and their abuse of the powers of their offices.”
The IDS is still walking out today, but there is a historic protest on campus happening. Given that armed IUPD and state police officers forcefully arrested peaceful pro-Palestinian protestors setting up tents in Dunn Meadow, we are providing a thread of what happened so far:
She said Whitten’s Sunday email was sent without review from members of the meeting.
“That has resulted in additional confusion and more mistrust in our ability to move forward collectively with the administration. It saddens me deeply to have to share that viewpoint.”
@RyRousseau
I am constantly trying to explain this to people. Pete was even more progressive than other candidates on certain points, but he presented his policies with an attitude of tolerance and moderation. Because of this, he was the most liked Democrat among conservatives in my area.
Absolutely loved my time at the

We so enjoyed having

Good luck in the future and keep us in mind when you graduate!
Demondrae Thurman, executive associate dean of the Jacobs School of Music, is no longer serving in his roles after sexual misconduct allegations. Claire Pollock told the IDS she was a senior in high school when the alleged misconduct took place.

We have two scholarship recipients as part of the 2022 Best of Indiana Journalism awards. Congrats to both of our recipients. We are excited what you will bring to the future of journalism.
The motion of no confidence in Carrie Docherty passed 672 out of 895 with 107 no votes and 116 abstentions per sources in attendance. That’s roughly 75% — so it passes, and it’s official.

Today,

The story gives an insightful look into the challenges and politics of the issue, which has been a major topic for city council this year.

My representative, Jim Baird, almost never hosts town halls, at least to my knowledge. I am signed up for his emails, and the last one I got about a town hall was in April. Baird’s opponent
@joe4hoosiers
is genuine, progressive, and I believe that he can do my district justice.
On the third day of the IU Divestment Coalition’s encampment, Indiana State Police and IU Police Department officers arrested 23 pro-Palestinian protesters at Dunn Meadow. Here are the scenes from Saturday.

Mass shootings are a horrifying reality in this country. This piece by

does the nearly impossible job of communicating the pain of having a place you love turn into yet another place where you struggle to feel safe.
Editor’s Note: This story includes mention of gun violence.
“It’s just kind of a change in mindset, like bad things do happen,” Ally said. “Even though they seem so big, so far away, like it’ll never happen, it does.”

Police detained a pro-Palestinian protestor Monday afternoon as demonstrators moved from Cox Arboretum to Dunn Meadow. Demonstrators told the IDS police told them to move to Dunn Meadow, which is a designated assembly ground.
BREAKING: IU Police Department detained and took one person away in a golf cart during a pro-Palestinian demonstration Monday. Other protestors were temporarily detained and informed that prosecutors may soon reach out about potential misdemeanor charges.
While wildfires burn in Canada and the west, government agencies are burning Indiana forests to keep them healthy. But some environmentalists say the practices are a guise to sustain the timber and game-hunting industries.
In Jan., the new sheriff revealed horrifying images of the county jail. Amid the pressure to clean things up, miscommunication and a fixation on building a new jail is complicating the process.

Following the no confidence vote, the IU Board of Trustees released a statement expressing full support of President Whitten. Whitten also sent an email to faculty highlighting the challenges of higher education and pledging to “listen and learn.”
City council winners include Isabel Piedmont-Smith, Kate Rosenbarger, Hopi Stosberg, Shruti Rana, Isak Asare, Matt Flaherty and Andy Ruff. Story on that to come.

A better way to present and explain more liberal policies as what they are at their core before Republicans can label them as “socialist” or “unrealistic.” Emphasizing shared values.

Education is one of my top issues, and this plan hits on every major problem with our system. I’m so excited for an Indiana where Dr. Woody Myers is governor and our schools are thriving—and it’s all just an election away!
Some more context for these results: this new council will include only four current council members, which could mean drastically different decisions and local legislation in the future.

Mr. Stevenson, Mr. Wilburn, Mr. Damron, Mrs. Scamacca, and a special appreciation for my government teacher, Ms. Gilly, who was forced to take the semester off due to the risk of COVID-19 as my school begins in-person classes. They should not have to make that choice.
It’s a familiar scene — two years ago, faculty met here to vote in support of the grad workers union at the height of their strike. Some faculty wanted to vote no confidence then, but it failed to make the agenda for a procedural reason.

literally every politician tries to spin caucuses/primaries to be positive. so it shouldn’t even be an issue. PLUS, HE ACTUALLY WON! if he had lost then i can understand complaining, but they need to get over it. he won, it was an awesome moment, and that’s the end of it.
A tragic conclusion to the search efforts for two missing IU students. Saturday was a particularly windy day according to DNR, which may have created dangerous conditions for swimmers that day.
On the fourth day of the search for two missing IU students, the bodies of Siddhant Shah, 19, and Aryan Vaidya, 20, were recovered from Monroe Lake on Tuesday.

It’s terrifying. I don’t know why our government is opening up as things are getting worse. It’s not even about politics — Dr. Woody Myers would make better decisions, plain and simple.
Over 700 faculty were in attendance at the last meeting — just short of the 800 required for motions to pass on the spot. It’s unclear if attendance is falling short of that or not, but graduate student Joshua Paschal said the fact a vote is happening at all is significant.
