Is Ebo/Ètùtù evil? The word Ebo/ Ètùtù has been so demonized that poeple forget they are mere Yoruba words. Everybody on earth is an Elebo/Eletutu irrespective of your beliefs. 1. When you are going out of the house and your child wouldn't stop crying just to follow you, the first thing you think about is how to make her stop crying. That's when you start petting her, you promise to buy her somethings when coming back; you might even give her some snacks to calm her down. Most of the time it works, then you are able to leave. What you did for your child is ÈTÙTÙ. 2. As a wife when your husband stayed out too late at night and you are very angry at him, the first thing that comes to mind is to call him to know why he is not back yet. When he answers the phone and he explains that he is on his way but got a bit delayed because he wants to get you his beautiful wife shawarma or barbecue, I am sure your mood will lighten up because of his thoughtfulness. What your husband did for you was an Ètùtù in exchange for a pleasant welcome back home. Ẹ.t.c In Yorùbá spirituality, ẹbọ/ ètùtù refers to a ritual offering or sacrifice made to the Orisas/irunmoles, ancestors, or spiritual forces. It is a fundamental practice aimed at maintaining balance, showing gratitude, seeking favour, or resolving issues in one's life. The concept of ẹbọ is deeply rooted in the belief that the physical and spiritual worlds are interconnected and offerings serve as a means of communication and exchange between humans and the divine. Ebo/ètùtù could be : 1. Physical form: These can include food, fruits, animals, drinks like palm wine, gin, water or other items that are presented to the Orishas/irunmoles or ancestors. 2. Spiritual form: These may involve prayers, chants, or acts of devotion. What is the Purpose of Ẹbọ/ètùtù? - To seek blessings, protection, or guidance. - To express gratitude for favors received. - To appease the Orishas/irunmole, ancestors or other entities if there is a perceived imbalance or offense. - To cleanse oneself or one's environment of negative influences or obstacles (known as Ajogún, òfò ẹ.t.c.) The Process Ebo/ètùtù The process of offering ẹbọ is often guided by a Babaláwo an Ifá priest, Iyanifa and Ifá priestess who determine the appropriate offering based on divination through the Ifá system. The offering is usually placed at a sacred space depending on the instructions given during idafa (ifá consultation) but it's mostly taken to Èsù. Anticipate for our upcoming educative movie about Ìṣẹ̀ṣe titled "Àpéré" coming out very soon. In Yorùbá spirituality, ẹbọ is not just a physical act but a sacred exchange that reinforces the relationship between humans and the spiritual realm. It is performed with respect, intention, and adherence to cultural and spiritual protocols. Ebo/ètùtù is not a sin neither is it an evil act as the Abrahamic religions has made it seem. Thank you for reading I am a proud ELEBO are YOU🫵? Àbọrú àbọyè Àbọsíse
