Interesting.
AI - like all tools - can be a loyal Servant but a dangerous Master Misplaced confidence in GenAl allows people to abandon their critical facilities Those with greater confidence in their field of enquiry tend to maintain #CriticalThinking

Great thread on the harm to US science and innovation due to impulsive, infantile, capricious decision-making fueled by rightwing rage and nihilism.
Wanted to check-in with these new @NIH changes that are going to affect so many. First let me remind everyone: I run 6 hybrid clinical/research centers, each with a specific clinical focus. Unlike the vast majority of my colleagues, federal funding sources account for less 1/

@thomaschattwill I agree that extremism on the left created anger and pushback. But people like Stephen Miller and other longtime fascist sympathizers have deep roots. @lionel_trolling’s WHEN THE CLOCK BROKE is excellent on this. I lived through this era…it was crazy:
There was a similar religious moral panic in the 1990’s about Satanism & child sex abuse—tangled up in a sick rightwing extremist culture of end-times books/films, Tea Party scapegoat politics, anti-government white nationalist militia. 1990’s tabloids = 2020 Facebook & YouTube

Some answers here. Big Brother 2.0 allows Inquisition-like scrutiny powered by AI that has no moral boundaries. Control, surveillance, humiliation, public shaming, false accusations, mass Two Minute Hates are here. The AI panopticon is just beginning:
Am curious about how much AI was used by Trump tech enablers to dismantle US government structures and civil rights. FOIA-level scrutiny would show how LLMs helped plan the violation of due process and law/order. AI increases efficiency regardless of merit or virtue.

@paulg @TheStalwart saying much of this, but better:
In today's Odd Lots newsletter, I wrote about why I'm such an evangelist of Walter Ong Thought. Why I think the Return To Orality is the biggest story of our time. And how we're completely rewiring the logic engine of the human brain.

The silly Hobbit who carelessly drops a pebble in a well and steals a palantir from the sleeping Gandalf goes on to save the life of Faramir, governs as Thain of the Shire for 50 years, fosters foreign relations and trade, and then emigrates to Gondor in his elder years.
THESIS: Tolkien’s characters in THE LORD OF THE RINGS (Denethor excepted) don’t change psychologically: their relationships with other characters do (e.g. Gimli & Legolas). At most, Tolkien’s characters change briefly (Gollum, Boromir, etc.) and then revert back to default.

This is illegal and a violation of civil rights protections. Just like high schools cannot single out Bible studies and religious clubs as forbidden, you cannot ban clubs and activities purely on the basis of race and gender because of a capricious and discriminatory edict.

Debased spectacle, gamified outrage, and childish antics aren’t necessary to identify and reduce waste.
USAID absolutely has dumb waste that serves no humanitarian purpose and should be eliminated (legally, through Congress). But forgive me for not wanting to also cause the death of 20 million HIV patients who get their life-saving medication thru PEPFAR, or cancel malaria nets.

@hubermanlab @HHSGov @NIH Andrew, there are several replies from 6+ hours ago pointing out the person who was outraged did the search incorrectly. You may want to delete or edit for sake of accuracy. One example explaining the error:
@stillgray You are doing a *keyword* search for "new york times". Most of those funds are not going to the NYTimes, but to other entities (ie, "New York University). You need to search by *recipient*.
