Many moons ago I asked @emiliapsantos if she could help me study evo-devo of neural crest using African cichlids for my PhD… and the main results are now published in @MolBioEvol 🎉 Thank you @gregverne for joining this chapter of my fishy adventure 🐠

This work wouldn't be possible without continuous support of my PhD supervisor Emília @emiliapsantos and fantastic co-author Greg @gregverne, MPhil student Archie as well as our collaborators in Malawi and Cambridge - thank you! 🐠

Pre-print 🚨 neural crest development in #cichlids varies among closely-related species, including a functional divergence in sox10 paralogs - see the 🧵👇 for the roles of these genes have in generating iconic morphological diversity of Malawi cichlids

Yesterday I passed my PhD viva! 🎉👩🏻‍🎓 pictured here with my supervisor @emiliapsantos and her PhD supervisor @WSalzburger - does this make me an F2?! Thank you everyone with whom I get to celebrate this achievement 🥳

It's been almost 3 weeks since this chapter of my life has ended and I still can't believe what an adventure it was! Thank you @emiliapsantos for being there from day 1 and here is to all the exciting things yet to come! 🐠

Still cannot believe @marconi_aleks submitted her thesis🎉👏She was brave enough to join a 1 person lab & I couldn't have chosen a better buddy to start it with!Lots of cichlid neural crest goodness to come. In the meantime here's a happy Aleks with some of her cichlids. 🥳🎉🐟

Few months ago, we took #cichlid embryology to the next level... and now our results are published!🎉 Go to and (re-)learn how divergence in embryonic development between species contributes to morphological diversity 🐠🥚 @evomorpholab & @CamZoology

New pre-print alert 🚨 morphological variation between cichlid species manifests during early embryonic development 🐠🥚 or "show me a #cichlid embryo and I will tell you who they are". see 🧵below: @CamZoology @evomorpholab

Today was my last day as graduate intern at @Cytiva’s Cambridge site - time to go back to my PhD! I will fondly remember past 6 months and how much I have grown as a scientist. Including learning that label maker in the hands of a lab manager can be a powerful weapon…

4/4 conclusion: the variation in dev processes concomitant with neural crest cell development (somitogenesis) & morphological divergence in NC-derived traits (pigmentation and craniofacial skeleton) implicates the role of variation in NC development in the cichlid diversification
