It's a #writing morning. That means I've: - Windexed three windows - Researched @SHO_Homeland actors who are actually British - Eaten two Rx bars and a banana - Checked the etymology of Rx (Latin! Who knew!) - Thought really hard about writing

Early Bird meets Heads in Beds (at sea). A career confused college grad plots a course between mental health escape and adventure, and winds up as a small ship cruise director (I'm not Julie McCoy) learning the most from his senior citizen passengers. #pitmad #memoir

My travels in BC and Haida Gwaii opened me up to this cruel history and it's lasting effects. A hugely important perspective to gain. @danjlevy, and here I didn't think I could like you any more. Cheers. #indigenouscanada

You will be surprised how many places you can go by simply staying still and asking questions. Then, when you do travel again, you'll do so with that much more in your kit bag. (END)

Are there details of your parents’ or grandparents’ lives that you’ve put off asking? Explorers are impatient and time is too precious. ASK. When was your city or town founded? By whom? Which Native American tribes were on the land before? (8/x)

I’m not going all kumbaya on you here. Nothing can replace travel. But, as our world shrinks, look around. Do you know what kind of trees are in your yard? Birds? What kind? What makes them unique? Neighbor from another country? Have you ever spoken to them about it? (7/x)

Historians taught me to seek the origins of everything. Ask why, when, who, how? Without leaving your town, by just thinking like an explorer, you can travel through space and time. (6/x)

Conversations with elderly passengers have led to invaluable life insights I would never have received if I didn’t ask. Naturalists have taught me to question the very dirt beneath my feet—and yes, the blades of grass. What kind of grass? Why does it grow here? (5/x)

Carl Sagan wrote, “A blade of grass is a commonplace on Earth; it would be a miracle on Mars.” Similarly, even though my most valued takeaways have come while traveling (my job), they haven’t been a function of the distance, but the depth. (4/x)

However—just trying to help—I’ve found value in distinguishing exploration and escape. While one provides temporary relief, the other enriches for a lifetime. And simply thinking like an explorer can help—even if you don’t leave your neighborhood. (3/x)

I see so many here wishing to travel, get away, etc. and I’m with you 100%. I’ve had to scrap trips, my freelance work has ceased, and I’m writing this with a one-year-old on my lap because daycare is closed. (2/x) #travel

THREAD: As a former small ship cruise director and expedition developer, I understand both the benefits of travel and the tempting but false belief that we find happiness simply by traveling. (1/x) #travel
