For 35 years, Chinese leaders have tried to erase all memory of the Tiananmen protests and the brutal massacre that crushed them. Last week I found a file of photos I took in Beijing in 1989, most of which I haven't seen since. I will post some now to commemorate those times.

In 1988, I spent months in Xinjiang. The Uighurs showed me, a lone traveller, much kindness, but their rage against CCP rule was palpable. The hell they are now suffering is the darkest stain of this century. The world must stop the genocide. Inaction is complicity.

On train from Shanghai, 1989, students cram into luggage racks to join Tiananmen Square protests in Beijing, and stay up all night, discussing democracy and freedom. I don't know their names, or how many survived the 4 June Massacre, but their undying spirit remains China's hope.

30 years ago, I saw this same scene in Tiananmen Square as protestors parted to let ambulances through. Huge crowds can easily become violent mobs. But in China in 1989, and Hong Kong today, the vast crowds brought out the best of human nature: courage, wisdom, compassion.
