Hey Ag Twitter.. I am resurrecting the UofG Midwest Tour and I need a couple of possible stops in the Garden City KS to Wichita KS area. And a possible stop for the Saturday of Labour Day weekend in southern NE... any leads would be greatly appreciated...
After 51 years of the Midwest Tour, I just sent our hosts an email letting them know that the 2020 Tour is cancelled. I really feel for the OAC21s that they could not experience the Midwest Tour. I am hopeful for the 2021 Midwest Tour.

Good day in the bee yard…. 13 out 15 hives came through the winter and are packed with bees. Pollen patties and treatments were added…. Wraps will come off in a few weeks…
I was saddened to learn of the passing of a great guy, Steve Eastep …. We have had corn plots at Steve & Sandra’s farm for over 20 years. It was my favourite location, mostly because it was always great to chat with Steve…. Sandra you and the family are in my thoughts…
variable red clover stands in winter wheat are one reason farmers are walking away from this cover crop option. A
@UofG_FfT
project may have made a breakthrough... twin-row wheat, with no loss in yield, but huge gains in single-cut red clover establishment

Rule
#1
everyone is different
For a research paper, articulate the hypothesis, objectives and conclusions first as it focuses the paper, write your M&M as you know what you did, then tables & figures. For R&D layout subheadings that build your case that lead to your conclusions
@AcademicChatter
When building your intro or lit review you must cite the original source of the knowledge.
Find a paper that you found well written and look at how it was written.
Remember that you are telling a story.
Keeping track of the relevant lit &how it fits together gets easier
On August 25th myself & Josh Nasielski (new faculty) hop on a bus with 44 4th year Aggies and 4 grad students and head out on the Midwest Tour... And of course our driver Ken on his last trip before he retires...

... I miss the old venue... this year’s venue has horrible service, poor house keeping, and the security service keeps demanding attention and barking at squirrels..... 2019 vs 2021...
Midwest Tour 2020 plans are underway, the 52nd year of the Tour. Week 1 and Week 2 routes below....
@OACAggies
I will be holding an info session for the tour on March 2nd at 4:30 in room 202 Crop Sci...
The Farm Connection also helped the Aggies celebrate

last Midwest Tour class with a cake, ice cream and a scrape book.... We caught him completely off guard and he was at a loss for words.... Midwest Tour 2018...
And I found the almost perfect ear of corn smut for cooking... would have preferred to have had kernels on the ear, but the corn smut season is young.....
Midwest Tour last day is in the books…. Today was a travel/time zone change day with only one stop…. Field tomatoes for

Holy stink was it cold on the back of the planter today.... It has been over 10 years since I’ve planted and I would have preferred to have friendly weather for my first day back... but we put one of our fields in up at Elora today and the Elora OCC trial is in the ground...
It has been over 3+ decades since I entered something in a fair, but I decided to enter some of my honey in the Royal Winter Fair. The entry form showed up in the mail yesterday....
The red clover plot from the twin row (right pic) is stunning compared to conventional row spacing (left pic) Can’t wait to see the numbers...

Midwest Tour day 12’s second stop was Corteva in Johnston where some old friends blew my students minds with among other things their amazing greenhouse facilities. Both stops innovate and rely heavily data to make selection decisions…

Fall semester begins this week... am I ready, sort of... spent a major chunk of my summer flipping my 2 classes around & sorting out tech options.... am I a bit scared, kind of... Zoom, internet connectivity & on-line exams... good luck to everyone!!!
Thank you all for a memorable Midwest Tour... To add to the stats, you all spent at least 110 hours in the classroom on this trip. It has been very rewarding watching and listening to you as you learned this past 2 weeks.... have a great 4th everyone!
As part of our
#FoodFromThought
research we are looking at the potential of twin-row wheat as a management strategic for more uniform frost seeded red clover stands. Wow are there some differences in canopy architecture showing up.... both are twin rows...
Dave Nichols of Nichols Farms, a long standing Midwest Tour stop and one of the pioneers in the beef industry passed away on Nov 5th.... My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone in the Nichols family....

It is that time of the year again.... corn smut season.... First up is corn smut on the tasselled mutation in our purple marker stock.... kind of shrunken head-ish...
Not all annual clovers are the same when it comes to fixing N…. From left to right - balansa clover, berseem clover, and crimson clover…. Look at those nodules on the berseem!
Save the date.... The University of Guelph's Wheat Breeding and Genetics program's field day will be on June 24th from noon to 4. More details to follow....

Spent the morning with my grad student Cindy making a few selections from one of her rose mapping populations. Ended up with 7 roses that looked good across the 5 reps. Oh and the bees were just a buzzing in the roses.... stay tuned for the selection pics...

Day 7 Midwest Tour. The hotel in Garden City had to call the cops last night. They had a rowdy bunch making noise & would not go to their rooms. Now I know you are probably thinking that I’m talking about my students…. Nope, the class of 1977 had a reunion

Genetics is fun when things work out as predicted... Found an abnormal phylotaxy phenotype last year in a population under selection for leaf number. Figured that I was dealing with a single dominant gene, given the rapid increase in the population. F1 confirms it...
Virtual teaching day
#1
.... survived the first classes without huge issues... still trying to get the 3rd party CC working on Zoom... Zoom chat might be an issue... students seem to treat it like social media.... I hope they realize that it is part of the Zoom recording....
The winter-hardy roses mapping population is looking good up at the Elora Research Station.... quite a bit of variation in winter hardiness....

You need to pick sweet corn hybrids that have the browning silk trait. The silks brown when cut means that they have high levels of maysin, apimaysin, and possibly chlorogenic acid. All of these compounds are antinutritives to a CEW....
Growing number of reports of corn earworm in sweet corn and even tomatoes. CEW is resistant to pyrethroid sprays. Freshly silking corn is at risk of infestation. Timing and coverage is essential. Remember silks grow fast and may lack residual control.
I’m a bit behind in sending out a couple of thank you tweets... first up

Something that most people don’t realize is that mutants are constantly cropping up in the breeding material. Here is a nice little dwarf and a tassel seed mutant.
Second stop day 3 of the Midwest Tour involved stopping at MU’s Delta Centre to visit with

Few pics from the greenhouse on this snowy blustery day... most excited about the strawberries... and of course the rose seedlings... trying the Kratky method of hydroponics this year, and so far the peppers look good...
Somewhat similar to what I tell my students…. Step 1 is M&M this is easy, you know what you did…. Step 2 is hypothesis you should know what you were testing…. Then figs, tables, results, discussion, last step abstract…
Dwarf mutants always look so robust out in the nursery... Too bad that grain yield on them is so poor.... These are for my genetics lab, just checking to make sure that they are segregating...
We had a a great day yesterday at the UofG Wheat Breeding field day! The students and staff did an amazing job! And
@WheatPete
kept them on their feet... We did a selection experiment at the end and we will be reporting the results here this fall....
Our other day 4 Midwest Tour stop was with Danny Parker and his partner Chad who farm 10000 acres, 7000 of which is cotton….

the upside of this year’s venue is more comfortable seating... the downside is that seating is limited and the competition for it is intense....
