- seeking government support from one of the industries forgotten by government - skilled freelancers marching from the UKs touring, festival and event industry on the edge
for a first day just over 600 people visited our eight libraries today over the four hours they were open and on a wet Manchester Saturday - i think that’s pretty impressive - very positive feedback from customers and staff alike,see you Tuesday - well done staff
@MancLibraries
fifteen years ago today i started work
@ManCityCouncil
as Head of Service Improvement for the Libraries and Theatres Dept - which ultimately became
@MancLibraries

tomorrow marks 14 years since i started
@ManCityCouncil
as Head of Service Improvement with the Libraries and Theatres Department - within 9 weeks my role had changed to support the new Asst Ch Exec (Culture) across the wider portfolio - loved those 14 years - very proud 2b MCR

Well 12 years ago today I became head of
@MancLibraries
- and if I recall we had some of the worst snow the city had seen ! The job has changed and grown 3 times since then and I’m even more passionate about our libraries than ever - how the service has grown and evolved
six years since Manchester Central Library reopened and on the same day I’m reviewing our library offer across the city in response to
#covid19UK
a lot of tears n heartbreak with me at the moment -35 years in the sector but we will do what is best for our city and our residents
can i just say a huge thank you for all the messages this weekend - love my job, love the role that libraries and culture have in the society we live in and extremely appreciative of the great teams i have worked with & part of in both
@GlasgowLib
@ManCityCouncil
@MancLibraries
quite strange visiting
@MancLibraries
for the first time in 10 weeks - quite possibly the longest time i’ve not been in a library ever - child and adult - only me and the reading girl to keep me company - good to walk the space again
i’ve lost a friend this morning - i knew he was having some trouble but didn’t realise how much - reach out to people if you think they’re in difficulty and if you’re struggling reach out to friends

Yip you can tell it’s 2020 when one of your birthday gifts is a new mask - oh well another year older - not quite going to be the usual birthday 🥳 week
So my library career really began as a result of the
@DofE
award scheme with community service B, S and Gold at my local library in Glasgow - at an early age it gave me an understanding of the difference the library makes - and I could make - thank you

Central Library was designed by E. Vincent Harris and constructed 1930 - 1934.
Grade II* listed, the form of the building, a columned portico attached to a rotunda domed structure, is loosely derived from the Pantheon, Rome.

Manchester was the first local authority to provide a public lending and reference library after the passing of the Public Libraries Act 1850. The Manchester Free Library opened at Campfield in September 1852 at a ceremony incl Charles Dickens.

@MancLibraries
across the city we are seeing an increased use by young people wanting a space to study, meet, spend time and to feel safe and secure
In a Tory world addicted to library closures, this is important and wonderful to see. Manchester’s beautiful central library today. Packed with young people quietly studying
@MancLibraries
Can’t explain how excited the reading girl and I are about reopening Central Library, the UKs busiest public library, this week - she’s been watching the building for 5 months ..
So 18 years ago today I ventured through these doors for the first time to use

What's your favourite thing about Central Library?
In this day in 2010, on a very snowy day, I became Head of
@MancLibraries
@archivesplus
and we started to plan our decant from Central Library - my role has expanded somewhat but I’m still as passionate about the power of libraries and their impact on lives
we had an orderly queue outside
@MCCCityCentre
city library for re- opening this morning - lonely to see people back in
@MancLibraries
- browsing, using PCs, printing , returning books, picking up reservations
@ManCityCouncil
the mothership in all its glory, also know as the corporation gasometer and the wedding cake, I call it the best public library in the UK - one day we shall return, see what

looking resplendent in one of the finest squares in Europe (slightly biased)
One customer who lived alone described how she was unable to leave the house and had not seen any one for months. She found the TV and radio depressing and was so pleased to be able to receive her large print books again and escape into a happier place. The books keep her going.
Many libraries are still running their vital Home Library Service. “I wish to thank you for your kindness and dedication towards helping to keep my elderly, widowed dad interested in reading about life in India, and for helping him to keep going when the going became too tough.”
Great news! Plans for our iconic new library have been approved. 🤩
The library will provide a vibrant learning, research, and collaboration hub, empowering our community and fostering creativity and engagement for future generations.
