With heavy hearts and tremendous sorrow, we mourn the tragic death of LFD Firefighter Sean McAdam who died from a medical emergency in the line of duty on May 11, 2022. Sean joined the LFD family in March 2002, spending his entire career assigned to specialty rescue companies.

LFD’s own, Maurice Ponder (T8), was recently named 7th Region Coach of the Year. Ponder is in his 3rd season at Male & has lead the program from 16-15 in his first yr to 19-5 this season. The Bulldogs have earned a spot in the 7th Region Tournament. Congrats Coach and good luck!

The LFD celebrates the graduation of recruit class 186. This is our first joint venture recruit class with Shively FD and PRP Fire District. The 55 recruits have completed 26 weeks of intense training. Mayor Fischer administered the Oath of Office. Congratulations and good luck!

A big 👍 & thank you to @PlanetFitness for their continued support of the LFD. Over the past 6 months, PF has donated 17 treadmills and 5 ellipticals, to outfit every LFD firehouse with cardio equipment. Cardio conditioning & overall physical & mental wellness are vital for us.

1/5 - 25 years ago today LFD Sergeant John “Strawn” Nutter was killed when the roof of a storage facility on South Seventh Street collapsed under him while performing ventilation operations during a fire.

3 adults and 7 children safely escaped a morning structure fire, after they were alerted by working smoke detectors. Smoke detectors save lives. We encourage everyone to check their smoke detectors. Home owners can call 311 to request a free detector installation in their home.

1/3 This is Firefighter Andy Ward. Andy retired from the LFD in 2017 after 22 years of outstanding service to the community. Andy was a tremendous firefighter, who always had a smile on his face and never seemed to have a bad day. Last week, we lost Andy to suicide.

Every year, the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation hosts the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend. The memorial is an official national tribute to firefighters who died in the line of duty during the previous year.

Two years ago today, the LFD lost Sgt. Tim Groft in the line of duty. Sgt. Groft was a victim of occupational related cancer. We remember Sgt. Groft and the heroic sacrifices he made. We recount his courage, honor, pride, loyalty and dedication to duty. “Tim was the best of us.”

02.06.2020 At 11:12pm last night, Crews responded to a structure fire in the 200 Block of S. 28th St. Companies arrived on scene in 3 minutes to find heavy fire in a vacant two-story dwelling. Firefighters established defensive operations & worked quick to extinguish the blaze.

343 FDNY Firefighters died responding to the World Trade Center on 9-11-2001. It’s the deadliest day in history for U.S. firefighters. On that day, firefighters willingly advanced toward danger, rather than retreat, undoubtedly saving thousands.

2/3 Today, we joined the rest of Andy’s family and friends for a beautiful funeral service at Old St. Cecilia Catholic Church in the Portland neighborhood. We will never know why Andy had to go, but we know for certain that PTSD is a reality for firefighters and first responders.

LFD had the proud privilege of welcoming retired FDNY Capt. Brenda Berkman to the Ali Center. Capt. Berkman was the first woman to serve in the FDNY. Capt. Berkman shared details of her struggle to integrate women into the FDNY, and recounted her response to the WTC on 9/11/01.

Last month, the LFD started Recruit Class 186 at the Louisville Fire Academy. Those that make it through this academy join the finest firefighting family in the world. 43 LFD recruits were joined by 13 recruits from the PRP Fire Protection District & 4 recruits from Shively FD.

We’ve received many inquiries about the impact of potential city budget cuts. For LFD, it could mean closing four firehouses over the next four years. In 2018 those firehouses combined for over 7,400 runs, including 549 fires and 3,446 medical calls.
