1/6 Details to keep in mind as Holborn tries to convince
#Vancouver
city hall that it can't afford to build the promised social housing at Little Mountain:
- Holborn agreed in 2008 to pay $334M, but didn't pay a cent to the province until 2013, when it made a $40-million deposit.
There has been much (understandable) debate about the editorial in the

We could only tell this story by getting access to the 911 recording, which is impossible for journalists in Canada. It makes me wonder how many other cases in this country have failed medical responses that we simply don't know about.
Driving home from my son’s Hockey game tonight, the 8:30 news led with Bianca’s big win, hurricane Dorian, and then the racist column published today in the newspaper where I work. That is gutting for me to hear. Much worse to the people we’ve insulted with those senseless words.
Every person touched by the

6/6 All these details were secret for years, until
@danfumano
and I uncovered them through a series of investigations, with the help of dogged advocates and furious former tenants who had been unjustly removed from their homes in this once-thriving community.
Ward & I were among the new kids in the

Sidney’s parents are angered by the lack of accountability from the university.
“It is inconceivable that eight years into the opioid public health emergency, a student can die from an overdose on a campus when witnesses called for help immediately,” her mother said.
I really enjoyed interviewing all the people quoted in this feature about doing their important, yet low-paying, work during a pandemic. Just wanted to thank them for taking time out of their busy lives to share their stories.

And there were more stories by us, as well as other media organizations, about this crazy deal that wiped out 238 subsidized homes for families in 2009, and so far only contains 53 social housing units today.
Sidney’s case has national implications. There are 2M post-secondary students in Canada, & many students are told to call campus security for emergencies.
On many campuses, access to naloxone is not easy.
“That leaves us very frightened for other students,” said father Ken Starko
This is a heart-breaking development. Tough to see a newspaper that my colleagues and I love, have to reduce the print version by one day. But we will still keep writing, so please keep reading. Thank you.

The family is also upset about the 911 call-taker.
“My daughter is no longer here to tell me how she was exposed to fentanyl,” her mom said.
“But we believe catastrophic failures by both the University of Victoria & the 911 operator contributed to Sidney’s preventable death.”
Thank you for being so passionate about this story & for sharing it widely. If you want more info, please visit the parents’ website, which includes a letter campaign to bring about change.

Would love to hear what people think about this story. On the one hand, the B.C. gov't raised $800M by selling off public land. On the other hand, that land is now gone and we don't have an infinite supply.
#BCpoli
3/6 So Holborn still owes millions for the land it "bought" in 2008, and doesn't have to pay up fully until Dec. 31, 2031 (8 more years!) - part of its original agreement when it bought the former social-housing property from the province.
4/6 But Holborn will never pay the province the full $334M, as it is allowed to subtract from that bill the costs of building the social housing units. AND B.C. Housing is lending Holborn $ to construct social housing at the same low interest rate it gives to non-profit agencies.
Just looking at the

No details yet about # of houses or industrial projects. Most of the land (250 acres) are on the North Shore. And as with Sen̓áḵw, the nation controls development over these lands, not the municipalities. This is a continuation of major developments by First Nations in Vancouver
Sidney’s friend who shared her love for Percy Jackson came to the hospital to say goodbye. She whispered in Sidney’s ear.
“I described the plot of the newest episode of the Percy Jackson series...& reminded her of various things that we did when we were little, or goofy memories"
2/6 Holborn has paid a bit more since then for the property that's subdivided into 12 pieces, but not much: that's because it doesn't have to pay for each portion of land until a building permit is approved by the city. So far, it has only built one building on 1 piece of the lot
5/6 Because of "uncertainty" over when building permits would be issued, Holborn has been allowed to discount the amount of each dollar owed by more than 3 per cent per year since 2013, leading to a reduction of several millions of dollar on its final tab.

BC "is in talks" to start buying nasal spray naloxone - an easy-to-use version of the overdose-reversing medication, rather than the hard-to-use type that requires injection by needle. Ontario & other provinces have nasal, which bystanders are more willing to use in an emergency
We tried in this story to show how this political debate over funding a compassion club has impacted the lives of people who received safe supply from it during an overdose crisis.
